a Rectangular Prism and a Pyramid

COMPETENCY & Determines the relationship of the volume between a rectangular prism and a pyramid
:
OBJECTIVES (M5ME-Iva-95)
CONTENT : Determining the Relationship of the Volume Between a Rectangular Prism and a Pyramid
LEARNING RESOURCES MELC Guide in Math 6, page 226

Q4 Self Learning Module, Week 1, Activity sheets
PROCEDURE : Preparation
1. Drill: Let the learners perform the indicated operation:
a) 10 x 16
b) 130 x 2.5
c) 610 ÷ 30
2. Review: What is a surface area? Let the learners solve each situation below:
a) A rectangular box has a length of 24 inches. A width of 18 inches and a height
of 30 inches. What is its surface area?
b) A pyramid has a base of 9 by 9 cm and a height of 10 cm. Give its surface area.

Motivation
Show concrete figures of a rectangular prism, pyramid, and cubes.
Measure the bases and height of each figure.
Ask: If you put cubes inside each figure, how many pieces of cubes do a rectangular prism
and pyramid figure can contain? What will happen If you try to put the pyramid inside
the rectangular prism?
Presentation
Introduce the word volume. Talk about it.
What is the relationship between the volume of a rectangular prism and a pyramid?
Discussion/Abstraction
 The volume of a space figure is the amount of space inside it.
 The volume of a prism is the amount of space inside the prism.
 Volume is measured in cubic units, which tells you how many cubes of a given
size it takes to fill the prism. We can use the diagram below to show why the
formula of any prism works. (refer to page 288 of the 21st century Mathletes)
 To find the volume (V) of a prism, multiply the number of cubic units needed to
cover the base (B) by the number of layers.
 Volume of the prism = is the product of the base area (B) and the height (h).
 V = B x h , since B = l x w, then V = l x w x h
 The volume of a pyramid is the amount of space inside the pyramid.
 Volume is measured in cubic units, which tells us how many cubes of a given size
it takes to fill the pyramid.
 It takes three pyramids to fill the rectangular box.
 The pyramid and the rectangular prism have the same base and height.
 Volume of the pyramid = ____ x volume of rectangular prism
For a rectangular prism, V = l x w x ___
So for pyramid, V = ___ l x w x or V = l x w x h
?

and height (h).

 V= x B x h or V = ( l x w x h )

Going back to the figures shown and measured at the start of the lesson, suppose the
rectangular prism and the pyramid have a length of 10 inches, a width of 8 inches, and a
height of 6 inches, what are their volumes? What is the relationship between the
volumes of the two figures?
Solve the volume of the rectangular prism:
V=lxwxh
= 10 inches x 8 inches x 6 inches
= 80 inches2 x 6 inches
= 480 inches3 or 480 cubic inches
Solve the volume of the pyramid:
1
V= (lxwxh)
3
1
= ( 10 inches x 8 inches x 6 inches)
3
1
= ( 80 inches2 x 6 inches)
3
1
= (480 inches3)
3
= 480 inches3
3
= 160 inches3 or 160 cubic inches

Therefore, we can say that the volume of a pyramid is of the volume of the prism if
3
their bases and height have the same measure.
