Letter to the Bishops on the Minimum Repertoire of Plainchant

The following is a translation of a letter that was sent to all bishops and heads of
religious orders, together with a book of chants, " J u b i l a t e D e o " . The letter was
published in Latin in the April 1974 issue of N o t i t i a e , (pages 123-126) and in
French in " L a D o c u m e n t a t io n C a t h o l i q u e " J u n e 2, 1974.

D o w n t h e c e n t u r i e s , G r e g o r i a n c h a n t h a s a c c o m p a n i e d l i t u r g i c a l c e l e b r a t i o n s in
t h e R o m a n r it e , h a s n o u r i s h e d m e n 's f a i t h a n d h a s f o s t e r e d t h e i r p ie t y , w h i l e in
t h e p r o c e s s a c h ie v i n g a n a r t is t i c p e r f e c t io n w h i c h t h e C h u r c h r i g h t l y c o n s i d e r s a
p a tr im o n y o f in e s tim a b le v a lu e a n d w h ic h th e C o u n c il r e c o g n iz e d a s " th e c h a n t
e s p e c ia lly s u ite d to th e R o m a n litu r g y ." [3 ]

O n e o f t h e o b j e c t i v e s o f t h e l i t u r g i c a l r e f o r m is t o p r o m o t e c o m m u n i t y s i n g i n g in
a s s e m b lie s o f th e fa ith fu l, s o th a t th e y m ig h t th e b e tte r e x p r e s s th e fe s tiv e ,
c o m m u n a l a n d fr a te r n a l c h a r a c te r o f litu r g ic a l c e le b r a tio n s . In e ffe c t, " th e
l i t u r g i c a l a c t i o n b e c o m e s m o r e d i g n i f i e d w h e n it is a c c o m p a n i e d b y c h a n t , w h e n
e a c h m in is t e r f u lf ills h is o w n r o le a n d th e f a ith f u l a ls o ta k e p a r t.[4 ]
T h o s e w h o a r e c h a r g e d w i t h r e s p o n s i b i l i t y f o r t h e l i t u r g i c a l r e f o r m a r e p a r t ic u l a r ly
a n x io u s to a c h ie v e th is d iffic u lt o b je c tiv e . T o th a t e n d , th e S a c r e d C o n g r e g a tio n
f o r D iv in e W o r s h ip a p p e a ls o n c e a g a in , a s th e y h a v e o fte n d o n e in t h e p a s t , f o r
t h e p r o p e r d e v e l o p m e n t o f s i n g i n g b y t h e f a i t h f u l.

W h e n v e r n a c u l a r s i n g i n g is c o n c e r n e d , t h e l i t u r g i c a l r e f o r m o f f e r s " a c h a l l e n g e t o
th e c r e a t iv it y a n d th e p a s to r a l z e a l o f e v e r y lo c a l c h u r c h ." [5 ] P o e ts a n d m u s ic ia n s
a r e th e r e fo r e to b e e n c o u r a g e d to p u t th e ir ta le n ts a t th e s e r v ic e o f s u c h a c a u s e ,
s o t h a t a p o p u l a r c h a n t m a y e m e r g e w h i c h is t r u ly a r t i s t ic , is w o r t h y o f t h e p r a i s e
o f G o d , o f t h e l i t u r g i c a l a c t i o n o f w h i c h it f o r m s p a r t a n d o f t h e f a i t h w h i c h it
e x p r e s s e s . T h e litu r g ic a l r e fo r m h a s o p e n e d u p n e w p e r s p e c tiv e s f o r s a c r e d

in o u r t i m e . S i n c e t h e v e r n a c u l a r is a d m it t e d t o w o r s h i p in e v e r y c o u n t r y it o u g h t
n o t t o b e d e n i e d t h e b e a u t y a n d t h e p o w e r o f e x p r e s s i o n o f r e li g i o u s m u s i c a n d

A t th e s a m e tim e , th e litu r g ic a l r e fo r m d o e s n o t a n d in d e e d c a n n o t d e n y th e p a s t.
R a t h e r d o e s it " p r e s e r v e a n d f o s t e r it w i t h t h e g r e a t e s t c a r e . " [ 7 ] I t c u l t iv a t e s a n d
t r a n s m i t s a ll t h a t is in it o f h i g h r e l ig i o u s , c u l t u r a l a n d a r t i s t i c w o r t h a n d e s p e c i a l l y
th o s e e le m e n ts w h ic h c a n e x p r e s s e v e n e x te r n a lly th e u n ity o f b e lie v e r s .
T h is m in im u m r e p e r to ir e o f G r e g o r ia n c h a n t h a s b e e n p r e p a r e d w ith th a t
p u r p o s e in m i n d : t o m a k e it e a s i e r f o r C h r i s t i a n s t o a c h i e v e u n i t y a n d s p i r it u a l
h a r m o n y w ith th e ir b r o th e r s a n d w ith t h e l i v i n g t r a d i t i o n s o f t h e p a s t . H e n c e it is
t h a t t h o s e w h o a r e t r y i n g t o i m p r o v e t h e q u a li t y o f c o n g r e g a t i o n a l s i n g i n g c a n n o t
r e f u s e t o G r e g o r i a n c h a n t t h e p l a c e w h i c h is d u e t o it . A n d t h i s b e c o m e s a ll t h e
m o r e im p e r a tiv e a s w e a p p r o a c h th e H o ly Y e a r o f 1 9 7 5 , d u r in g w h ic h th e fa ith fu l
o f d iffe r e n t la n g u a g e s , n a tio n s a n d o r ig in s , w ill fin d th e m s e lv e s s id e b y s id e f o r

T h o s e w h o b e c a u s e o f t h e i r s p e c i a l v o c a t i o n in t h e C h u r c h n e e d t o h a v e a
d e e p e r k n o w l e d g e o f s a c r e d m u s i c o u g h t t o b e p a r t ic u l a r ly c a r e f u l t o o b s e r v e a
p r o p e r b a la n c e b e tw e e n p o p u la r c h a n t a n d G r e g o r ia n c h a n t. F o r th is r e a s o n th e
H o l y F a t h e r r e c o m m e n d e d t h a t " G r e g o r i a n c h a n t b e p r e s e r v e d a n d b e s u n g in
m o n a s t e r i e s , o t h e r r e li g i o u s h o u s e s a n d s e m i n a r i e s , a s a s p e c i a l f o r m o f c h a n t e d
p r a y e r a n d a s s o m e th in g o f h ig h c u ltu r a l a n d p e d a g o g ic v a lu e ." [8 ]
