Harvard University, today recognized as part of the top echelon of the world’s universities,
came from very inauspicious and humble beginning. This oldest of American universities
was founded in 1636, just sixteen years after the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth. Included in
the Puritan emigrants to the Massachusetts colony during this period were more than 100
graduates of England’s prestigious Oxford and Cambridge universities, and these universities
graduates in the New Word were determined that their sons would have the same educational
opportunities that they themselves had had. Because of this support in the colony for an
institution of higher learning, the General Court of Massachusetts appropriated 400 pounds
for a college in October of 1636 and early the following year decided on a parcel of land for
the school; this land was in an area called Newetowne which was later renamed Cambridge
after its English cousin and is the site of the present-day university.
When a young minister named John Harvard, who came from the neighboring town of
Charlestowne, died from tuberculosis in 1638, he willed half of his estate of 1,700 pounds to
the fledgling college. In spite of the fact that only half of the bequest was actually paid, the
General Court named the college after the minister in appreciation for what he had done. The
amount of the bequest may not have been large, particularly by today’s standard, but it was
more than the General Court had found it necessary to appropriate in order to open the
college. Henry Dunster was appointed the first president of Harvard in 1640, and it should be
noted that in addition to serving as president, he was also the entire faculty, with an entering
freshmen class of four students. Although the staff did expand somewhat, for the first
century of its existence the entire teaching staff consisted of the president and three or four
tutors.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the
correct answer to each of the following questions from 33 to 39.
How long will a baby born today live? 100 years? 120 years? Scientists are studying genes
that could mean long life for us all. There are already many, many people who have passed
the landmark age of 100. In fact, there are now so many healthy, elderly people that there’s a
name for them: the wellderly. These are people over the age of eighty who have no major
illnesses, such as high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes. There are many scientific
studies of communities where healthy old age is typical. These include places like Calabria
in southern Italy and the island of Okinawa in Japan. In Calabria, the small village of
Molochio has about 2,000 inhabitants. And of these, there are at least eight people over a
hundred years old. When researchers ask people like this the secret of their long life, the
answer is almost always aboutfood and is almost always the same: ‘I eat a lot of fruit and
vegetables.’ ‘I eat a little bit of everything.’ ‘ I neither smoke nor drink.’ In the past,
scientists looked at things such as diet and lifestyle for an explanation of long life, these days
they are also looking at genetics. Researcher Eric Topol says that there must be genes that
explain why people are protected from the effects of aging process. The new research into
long life did scrutinize groups of people who have a genetic connection. One interesting
group lives in Ecuador. In one area of the country there are a number of people with the
same genetic condition. It’s called Laron syndrome. These people don’t grow very tall – just
over one metre. But Laron syndrome also give them protection against cancer and diabetes.
As a result, they live longer than other people in their families. Meanwhile, on the Hawaiian
island of Oahu, there’s another group of long-lived men, Japanese Americans. They have a
similar gene to the Laron syndrome group. Back in Calabria, researchers constructed the
family trees of the 100-year-old people. They looked at family information from the 19th
century to today. It is concluded that there are genetic factors that give health benefits to the
men. This is a surprising result because generally in Europe, women live longer than men.
So what really makes people live longer? It seems likely that it is an interaction of genes, the
environment and probably a third factor – luck.

Advertising helps people recognize a particular brand, persuades them to try it, and tries
to keep them loyal to it. Brand loyalty is perhaps the most important goal of consumer
advertising. Whether they produce cars, canned foods or cosmetics, manufacturers want
their customers to make repeated purchases. The quality of the product will encourage
this, of course, but so, too, will affect advertising.
Advertising relies on the techniques of market research to identify potential users of a
product. Are they homemakers or professional people? Are they young or old? Are they
city dwellers or country dwellers? Such questions have a bearing on where and when ads
should be played. By studying readership breakdowns for newspapers and magazines as
well as television ratings and other statistics, an advertising agency can decide on the best
way of reaching potential buyers. Detailed research and marketing expertise are essential
today when advertising budgets can run into thousands of millions of dollars.
Advertising is a fast-paced, high-pressure industry. There is a constant need for creative
ideas that will establish a personality for a product in the public’s mind. Current
developments in advertising increase the need for talented workers.
In the past, the majority of advertising was aimed at the traditional white family –
breadwinner father, non- working mother, and two children. Research now reveals that
only about 6 percent of American households fit this stereotype. Instead, society is
fragmented into many groups, with working mothers, single people and older people on
the rise. To be most successful, advertising must identify a particular segment and aim its
message toward that group.
Advertising is also making use of new technologies. Computer graphics are used to grab
the attention of consumers and to help them see products in a new light. The use of
computer graphics in a commercial for canned goods, for instance, gave a new image to
the tin can.

Read the following passage and blacken the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to the following questions.

Of all modern instruments, the violin is apparently one of the simplest. It consists in
essence of a hollow, varnished wooden sound box, or resonator, and a long neck covered
with a fingerboard, along which four strings are stretched at high tension. The beauty of
design, shape, and decoration is no accident. The proportions of the instrument are
determined almost entirely by acoustical considerations. Its simplicity of appearance is
deceptive. About 70 parts are involved in the construction of a violin. Its tone and its
outstanding range of expressiveness make it an ideal solo instrument. No less important,
however, is its role as an orchestral and chamber instrument. In combination with the
larger and deeper- sounding members of the same family, the violins form the nucleus of
the modern symphony orchestra.
The violin has been in existence since about 1550. Its importance as an instrument in its
own right dates from the early 1600’s, when it first became standard in Italian opera
orchestras. Its stature as an orchestral instrument was raised further when in 1626 Louis
XIII of France established at his court the orchestra known as Les vinq-quatre violons du
Roy (The King’s 24 Violins), which was to become widely famous later in the century.
In its early history, the violin had a dull and rather quiet tone resulting from the fact that
the strings were think and were attached to the body of the instrument very loosely.
During the eighteenth and nineteenth century, exciting technical changes were inspired by
such composer-violinists as Vivaldi and Tartini. Their instrumental compositions
demanded a fuller, clearer, and more brilliant tone that was produced by using thinner
strings and a far higher string tension. Small changes had to be made to the violin’s
internal structure and to the fingerboard so that they could withstand the extra strain.
Accordingly, a higher standard of performance was achieved, in terms of both facility and
interpretation. Left-hand technique was considerably elaborated, and new fingering
patterns on the fingerboard were developed for very high notes.

Câu 44: All of the following are mentioned in the passage as contributing to the ability to
play modern violin music EXCEPT .
A. different ways to use the fingers to play very high notes

string tension

Samba is one of Brazil's most popular music and dance styles. In many ways, it is symbol of
the country itself. In the words of one modern samba's main artists, Seu Jorge, "Samba is our
truth, our peculiarity....and our flag" When people today hear the word Samba, they often
think of the festival of Camavan and the city of Rio de Janeiro. But there are many different
types of samba, and these styles differ throughout Brazil.
Today, one of the most popular types of samba comes from Bahia, a state in the eastern part
of the country. It's called samba reggae. From the 16 to 18th centuries, over three million
Africans were brought to Brazil to work as slaves. Today in Bahia, 80 percent of the
population is black, Samba from this region of Brazil is heavily influenced by African
rhythms. Modern Samba reggae is a mix of Rio samba, African drumbeats, and Jamaican
reggae. It is a bit slower than Rio samba, and is usually performed in large groups-
sometimes with over 200 drums playing at one time
Bahia's most famous drumming group is Olodum. Many say the group invented the samba
reggae sound. But Olodum is not only a musical group. Its members have also created local
organizations to help young people and the poor. Every year in the city of Salvador in Bahia,
the lively sounds of samba reggae fill the streets during Carnaval - one of the world's greatest
parties.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
Madison Square Garden, a world-famous sporting venue in New York City, has actually
been a series of buildings in varied locations rather than a single building in one spot. In
1873, P.T. Barnum built Barnum’s Monster Classical and Geological Hippodrome at the
corner of Madison Avenue and 26th Street, across from Madison Square Park. Two years
later, the bandleader Patrick Gilmore bought the property, added statues and fountains, and
renamed it Gilmore’s Gardens. When Cornelius Vanderbilt bought the property in 1879, it
was renamed Madison Square Garden.
A second very lavish Madison Square Garden was built at the same location in 1890, with a
ballroom, a restaurant, a theater, a rooftop garden, and a main arena with seating for 15,000.
However, this elaborate Madison Square Garden lasted until 1924 when it was torn down to
make way for a forty-storey skyscraper.
When the second Madison Square Garden had been replaced in its location across from
Madison Square Park, the boxing promoter Tex Rickard raised six million dollars to build a
new Madison Square Garden. This new Madison Square Garden was constructed in a
different location, on 8th Avenue and 50th Street and quite some distance from Madison
Square Park and Madison Avenue. Rickard’s Madison Square Garden served primarily as an
arena for boxing prize fights and circus events until it outgrew its usefulness by the late
1950s.
A new location was found for a fourth for Madison Square Garden, a top Pennsylvania
Railroad Station, and plans were announced for its construction in 1960. This current edifice,
which includes a huge sports arena, a bowling center, a 5,000-seat amphitheater, and a
twenty-nine-storey office building, does retain the traditional name Madison Square Garden.
However, the name is actually quite a misnomer. The building is not located near Madison
Square, nor does it have the flowery gardens that contributed to the original name.

Device-centred communication has become almost universal over the past twenty
years. More than three quarters of people in the world now own a mobile device, and more
than half communicate via social networking.
It is now hard to imagine a world without mobile devices consisting of such things as
mobile phones, laptops and tablets. They allow us to stay in touch with a large network of
friends, no matter where they are. But many experts say that communicating with a device
is nothing like talking with someone in person. “Body language, eye contact and tone of
voice can tell us so much,” psychologist Mary Peters says. “And none of those exist on a
device. Even video chat removes many subtle clues.”
We don’t know to what extent these technologies will permanently change the way
people interact. People will always want to meet up with others in small and large groups.
Indeed, it is fair to say that social media makes it easier than ever before for people to
organise social events. However, there is still a danger that device-centred communication
may have a negative long-term impact on the way people interact with each other on a
day-to-day basis.
We must not, therefore, lose sight of the need to focus on the actual people around
us, and remember that they deserve our real – not virtual – attention. The idea of a culture
where people always have a screen between them sounds a bit funny, because deep
understanding comes when we see the reactions on other people’s faces.

A recent survey into how teenagers in a Southeast Asian country spend their free time
has come up with what some people regard as a surprising finding: many of those surveyed
reported that they would rather stay at home and do things indoors than go out and
experience real-life adventures. One in four teenagers surveyed believed that online
experiences were as fulfilling as real life, and more than half were actually afraid of trying
new experiences. When asked about their most memorable experience over the previous
ten months, nearly 30% of boys said ‘playing a new video game’, while 10% of all teenagers
said it was watching a new TV series. On asking for more detailed information, researchers
found that 20% of boys and 22% of girls said they had never had a real-life adventure.
It would be easy to blame technological advances for these findings. After all, today’s
teenagers have many more indoor activities to choose from than did their parents. About
half a century ago, children were expected to spend more of their free time outside. But
researchers do not put the blame wholly on technology.
To members of older generations, these findings are worrying, because it means that
young people increasingly rely on virtual reality and are consequently missing out on real
outdoor activities such as mountain climbing, kayaking, etc., which have always been
regarded as both enjoyable and character- building. The surveyed adults said they thought
today’s youth were more protected than they had been when they were growing up. Giving
examples of this protection, more than half said they would not let their teenage children
hitchhike or go on holiday without an adult. Seven in ten said they would not even allow
teenagers to get into a taxi on their own. It is not clear whether adults believe the world is
more dangerous than it used to be or whether they do not trust today’s youngsters to look
after themselves.

Device-centred communication has become almost universal over the past twenty years.
More than three quarters of people in the world now own a mobile device, and more than
half communicate via social networking.
It is now hard to imagine a world without mobile devices consisting of such things as mobile
phones, laptops and tablets. They allow us to stay in touch with a large network of friends,
no matter where they are. But many experts say that communicating with a device is
nothing like talking with someone in person. "Body language, eye contact and tone of voice
can tell us so much," psychologist Mary Peters says. "And none of those exist on a device.
Even video chat removes many subtle clues."
We don't know to what extent these technologies will permanently change the way people
interact. People will always want to meet up with others in small and large groups. Indeed,
it is fair to say that social
media makes it easier than ever before for people to organise social events. However, there
is still a danger that device-centred communication may have a negative long-term impact
on the way people interact with each other on a day-to-day basis.
We must not, therefore, lose sight of the need to focus on the actual people around us, and
remember that they deserve our real - not virtual - attention. The idea of a culture where
people always have a screen between them sounds a bit funny, because deep
understanding comes when we see the reactions on other people's faces.

A recent survey into how teenagers in a Southeast Asian country spend their free time has
come up with what some people regard as a surprising finding: many of those surveyed
reported that they would rather stay at home and do things indoors than go out and
experience real-life adventures. One in four teenagers surveyed believed that online
experiences were as fulfilling as real life, and more than half were actually afraid of trying
new experiences. When asked about their most memorable experience over the previous
ten months, nearly 30% of boys said 'playing a new video game', while 10% of all teenagers
said it was watching a new TV series. On asking for more detailed information, researchers
found that 20% of boys and 22% of girls said they had never had a real-life adventure.
It would be easy to blame technological advances for these findings. After all, today's
teenagers have many more indoor activities to choose from than did their parents. About
half a century ago, children were expected to spend more of their free time outside. But
researchers do not put the blame wholly on technology.
To members of older generations, these findings are worrying, because it means that young
people increasingly rely on virtual reality and are consequently missing out on real outdoor
activities such as mountain climbing, kayaking, etc., which have always been regarded as
both enjoyable and character- building. The surveyed adults said they thought today's
youth were more protected than they had been when they were growing up. Giving

after themselves.

Scientists know that there were wolves on Earth about one million years ago. Dogs,
on the other hand, have not been on Earth nearly as long. The oldest dog remains, found in
Germany, are about 14,000 years old. Scientists have proven that dogs are descended from
wolves. Though wolves and dogs share some of the same genes, they are not exactly alike.
In fact, there are as many differences as there are similarities between the two.
First, there are physical differences between the two. Wolves have longer legs, larger
feet, and a broader skull than dogs. They also walk differently from dogs. A wolf runs on its
toes with its heels raised up from the ground. This is more similar to a cat’s walk than a
dogs.
Second, there are mental differences between the two. Dogs have been
domesticated. This means that dogs have been brought under the control of humans in
order to provide companionship. Wolves have not been domesticated. They are wild
animals. Having a dog as a pet is like having a juvenile wolf. A young wolf will turn into a
mature adult, while a young dog does not mature. A dog might seem smart by performing
tricks for people. Wolves need to be smart to survive in the wild. While it may not be
impossible to have a wolf as a pet, scientists are of the opinion that a wolf could never be
domesticated in the same way as a dog.
It’s important to keep in mind that the differences between the two are great, and
each should be appreciated in its own habitat or home.

IBT)

It was once believed that being overweight was healthy, but nowadays few people
subscribe to this viewpoint. While many people are fighting the battle to reduce weight,
studies are being conducted concerning the appetite and how it is controlled by both
emotional and biochemical factors. Some of the conclusions of these studies may give
insight into how to deal with weight problems. For example, when several hundred people
were asked about their eating habits in time of stress, 44 percent said they reacted to
stressful situations by eating. Further investigations with both humans and animals
indicated that it is not food which relieves tension but rather the act of chewing.
A test in which subjects were blindfolded showed that obese people have keener
sense of taste and crave more flavorful food than non-obese people. When deprived of the
variety and intensity of taste, obese people are not satisfied and consequently eat more to
fulfill this need. Blood samples taken from people after they were shown a picture of food
revealed that overweight people reacted with an increase in blood insulin, a chemical
associated with appetite. This did not happen with average-weight people.
In another experiment, results showed that certain people have a specific,
biologically induced hunger for carbohydrates. Eating carbohydrates raises the level of
serotonin, a neurotransmitter in the brain. Enough serotonin produces a sense of satiation,
and hunger for carbohydrates subsides.
Exercise has been recommended as an important part of weight-loss program.
However, it has been found that mild exercise, such as using stairs instead of elevator, is
better in the long run than taking on a strenuous program, such as jogging, which many
people find difficult to continue over periods of time and which also increases appetite.

Sweden can be one of the first countries to stop using cash. In most cities, buses do not
take any cash. Instead, you pay for your tickets by card or mobile phone before you get on.
Some businesses only take cards and there are banks that do not deal with any notes or coins.
In a cashless society, you do not need to worry about having enough change for the
bus. You will feel much more secure as well. Statistics show that since the decrease in the
cash economy, there is not as much crime in Sweden.
However, not all Swedes like the idea. Elderly people complain much about the
problems of paying by card. Small business are also unhappy because they have to pay a
little money to the bank each time somebody pay them using a card.
It is not just richer countries that are becoming cashless. Many countries in the
developing world have found that mobile phones are perfect for transferring money. For
example, in Kenya, only a few people have a bank account, but lots of Kenyan have mobile
phone. Now people can pay for things in shops, pay their bills and their children’s school
fees, and receive their salary with their phones. Kenya has led a revolution in mobile
banking.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
It is often held that technology in general does little to help family relationships as, in
many cases, family members are more interested in their smartphones and the TV than they
are in each other. Before smartphones the TV was blamed the most for breakdowns in
communication between parents and children. It was argued that “the box” stop them from
talking to each other, and clashes between family members over what programs to watch
create barriers and cause resentment.
However, TV programs can be booth informative and entertaining. They often provide
topics for family members to discuss, bring them closer together rather than driving them
further away. What is more, twenty-first century families do not need to watch the same
program at the same time. The fact that people can watch what they want results in more
time for families to be together rather than less.
The smartphone has taken over from the TV as a major reason for the lack of
communication between family members. Parents often do not see why their children spend
so much time online and fail to see the importance of having an online identity while most
teens feel their online image is part of who they are. They often criticize the amount of time
their children spend online rather than attempting to understand why they do it. In fact,
adults are often not very good examples themselves. Who has not witnessed a table at a
restaurant where all the family members are silently focused on their mobile devices?
Broadly speaking, smartphones do have some negative effects on family relationships.
This technology is still relatively new, so many families have not yet learned how to deal
with it. Parents and children should discuss how they use technology to help them all to
make the most of technology instead of blaming it for their problems.

Japanese Girls' Day-also known as the Doll's Festival-is celebrated on March 3 to pray for
the health and happiness of young girls in Japan. Hinamatsuri, the name of the celebration in
Japan, is marked by families displaying a set of hina dolls in the house and serving special
delicacies that are ceremonially beautiful and delicious.
Traditionally, parents or grandparents of a newborn girl buy a set of hina dolls for the baby,
unless they have special dolls that are inherited from generation to generation. From the end
of February to March 3, hina dolls dressed in Japanese ancient costumes are displayed on
tiered platforms that are covered with a red carpet. The costumed dolls represent the imperial
court of the Heian period (A.D. 794 to 1185] and feature the emperor, empress, attendants,
and musicians dressed in traditional garb.
The dolls are displayed hierarchically with the emperor and empress at the top, which are set
in front of a gilded screen representing the thrown. The number of dolls and their size vary
from home to home, but five to seven platforms are common.
It is customary to put the dolls away as soon as the festival is over-there is a superstition that
if the dolls are left out, a family will have trouble marrying off their daughters. After the
festival, some people release paper dolls into the rivers praying that this will send away
sickness and bad fortune. (Adapted from https:'/'/ivwiv. thespruceeats.com/)

Attracting users to social networking sites and cloud computing sites is all about building
trust. However, if recent news is anything to go by, consumers would be right to consider
that the trust they have put into the Internet companies that run these services has been
betrayed.
Between 2006 and the beginning of 2010, search engine giant Google started a project to
map and digitally photograph every road in every major city in more than 30 countries for
its product Google Streetview. But images, it appears, is not all that the Streetview cars
collected. It now turns out that Google collected over 600 Gigabytes of data from users of
public and unprotected Wi-Fi access routers - which included Web pages visited and emails.
All this was collected without the prior knowledge or permission of the router owners.
But most criticism surrounding data privacy is currently reserved for Facebook, which has
faced an extreme anger from consumers when millions of users suddenly found their private
details exposed and searchable on Google, Bing and Yahoo. Facebook, whose privacy
policies have come under attack both at home and abroad, now faces a stiff fine for storing
non-users’ personal data without their permission. Founder Mark Zuckerberg appears to be
relenting and is now beefing up security.
The issue came to the fore in recent months among concern that Facebook’s confusing privacy
settings were making it possible for Internet stalkers, cyber criminals and even nosy
neighbours to gain a wealth of information about its users without their knowledge or
permission.
What all these companies deal in is trust. Without trust, we would not allow them access to our
private information. Therefore, it’s important that they maintain our trust. If social
networking becomes increasingly important to companies such as Google, Apple and
Microsoft, they will have to be careful not to violate their users’ trust in the future.

Marriage is an ancient religious and legal practice celebrated around the world. However,
wedding customs vary from country to country.
The Wedding Rings: In most cultures, during the marriage ceremony, couples exchange their
wedding rings with their life partner - usually made of gold or silver. The wedding rings are
normally worn on the third finger of the left or right hand as a sign of being married. The
circular shape of the ring is symbolic of the couple’s eternal relationship. In Brazil and some
other communities, it is a tradition to have the rings engraved with the bride’s name on the
groom’s ring, and vice versa.
The Wedding Flowers: Obviously, flowers play an important role in most weddings. In many
areas, roses, especially the red roses are said to be the flowers of love, and because they
usually bloom in June, this has become the most popular month for weddings in many

Do you feel like your teenager is spending most of the day glued to a phone screen? You're
not too far off. A new survey from the Pew Research Center reveals the surprising ways that
technology intersects with teen friendships – and the results show that 57 percent of teens
have made at least one new friend online. Even more surprisingly, only 20 percent of those
digital friends ever meet in person.
While teens do connect with their friends face-to-face outside of school, they spend 55
percent of their day texting with friends, and only 25 percent of teens are spending actual
time with their friends on a daily basis (outside of school hallways). These new forms of
communication are key in maintaining friendships dayto-day – 27 percent of teens instant
message their friends every day, 23 percent connect through social media every day, and 7
percent even video chat daily. Text messaging remains the main form of communication –
almost half of survey respondents say it's their chosen method of communication with their
closest friend.
While girls are more likely to text with their close friends, boys are meeting new friends
(and maintaining friendships) in the gaming world – 89 percent play with friends they know,
and 54 percent play with online-only friends. Whether they're close with their teammates or
not, online gamers say that playing makes them feel "more connected" to friends they know,
or garners they've never met.
When making new friends, social media has also become a major part of the teenage
identity – 62 percent of teens are quick to share their social media usernames when
connecting with a new friend (although 80 percent still consider their phone number the best
method of contact). Despite the negative consequences - 21 percent of teenage users feel
worse about their lives because of posts they see on social media – teens also have found
support and connection through various platforms. In fact, 68 percent of teens received
support during a challenging time in their lives via social media platforms.
Just as technology has become a gateway for new friendships, or a channel to stay
connected with current friends, it can also make a friendship breakup more public. The study
reveals that girls are more likely to block or unfriend former allies, and 68 percent of all
teenage users report experiencing "drama among their friends on social media."
Question 26: What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Teenagers are making and keeping friends in a surprising way.
B. The difference of making new friends between girls and boys.
C. Social media connects friendship.
D. Social media affects friendship too much.
