FIVE WAYS

TO PROMOTE
EMPLOYEE
WELLNESS
PROMOTE A CULTURE THAT SUPPORTS
MENTAL HEALTH
If you work in the HR space, you know that studies and surveys continue to report that
today's workers are feeling increasingly stressed out on the job, with negative effects
draining their productivity and overall sense of well-being.
According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, workers who take time off work
because of stress, anxiety, or a related disorder will be off the job for about 20 days,
leaving other members of their teams to pick up the slack. That’s a lot of pressure on an
already overburdened workforce. Company leaders, managers, and HR professionals are
responsible for promoting a culture that supports mental health—and they can make a
bigger impact than they might think!
01
LAUNCH AN EMPLOYEE
WELLNESS PROGRAM

Employee wellness programs are

created by an employer to optimize
or improve employee health and
help individual employees overcome
specific health challenges. A wellness
program might include training, staff
seminars, or companywide activities or
outings, such as a healthy potluck or a
step challenge. Your company and its
employees can reap huge rewards from
an effective wellness program, and it
can engage and empower employees to
lead healthier lives.
02 REMIND EMPLOYEES OF AVAILABLE RESOURCES
Broadcast your employee assistance program’s (EAP) offerings so your employees know they
can connect with a qualified mental health professional to talk through issues in and out of
the workplace.
03
CONSIDER MORE
FLEXIBILITY
Allowing some flexibility in
employees’ work schedules is
an easy way to boost morale, as
well as help retain existing talent.
The best part? It doesn’t cost
a dime. An example of this is a
manager offering an employee
a later start time biweekly so
the worker can attend his or her
favorite morning exercise class.
This is a small gesture that shows
your employees you appreciate
their hard work.
04
ENCOURAGE OPEN
COMMUNICATION
Training your leaders and
managers to foster a culture
of open communication, both
at work and personally, can be
especially rewarding to both
parties. Encourage weekly check-
ins for managers to discuss goals,
progress, and feedback and
give employees an opportunity to
ask questions or address concerns.
05 PRIORITIZE A HEALTHY WORK/LIFE BALANCE
Encourage your employees to take their breaks, get up periodically throughout the day and
move. Help them to feel empowered to disconnect when they’re done working for the day.
As the saying goes, a person who feels appreciated will always do more than
what is expected.
It’s more important than
ever to prioritize mental
health in the workplace.
According to the 2021
State of Mental Health In
America report, anxiety
has reached its highest
level since the pandemic
began, and the depression
rate has tripled. Prioritizing
employees’ mental health
can make them more
resilient and productive
at work, making it easier
for the company to both
meet and exceed its goals.
Putting your employees’
well-being first is a win-win
for both the employer and
its employees.
