Smart Accident Prevention of Vehicles with Fuel Level Monitoring

Team Gamma
Abstract
The aim of this research is to reduce vehicle accidents and increase fuel safety through a smart
monitoring system. Most drivers fall asleep while driving or drink alcohol to cause accidents. To
signal when the driver falls asleep, and in the event of an accident, a call or SMS to the
ambulance and emergency services will be sent along with location tracking where the accident
occurred and to show how the level of fuel can be monitored from a distance and how theft may
be easily detected from that location. For this, a level sensor will be required, which will
continuously collect readings of the fuel level in the tank (vehicle tank or any reservoir), and this
level sensor will be connected to a microcontroller input. The IoT implementation element is that
the amount of fuel can be continuously monitored and displayed on a website using an ESP8266
Node MCU. To complete the second part, which is to make it a fuel theft detection system, there
would be a threshold value for decreasing fuel level height. If the lowering rate of fuel is greater
than the threshold level, an alarm will be transmitted to its owner in the case of a car tank, or a
buzzer will be turned on in the case of an industrial reservoir.

Introduction
At least one person is injured or killed in a traffic accident if at least one vehicle collides with an obstacle
on the road. To help drivers avoid potential collisions, certain vehicles are equipped with accident
warning systems that sound alarms and display warnings when certain circumstances, both inside and
outside the car, are met. An Arduino Nano microcontroller kit is used to put the plan into action. To
better sense the nozzle and determine whether the driver is impaired, the alcohol sensor is mounted on
the top surface of the steering wheel. The purpose of the ultrasonic sensor is to warn the driver of any
potential dangers, such as other cars or objects on the road. The driver of the vehicle is warned so that
he or she may take preventative measures. Nowadays, the price of fuel has become an issue of stress in
daily life, and the number of fuel thieves is increasing by the day. Street CCTV cameras frequently
capture cases of illegal fuel theft from a bike’s fuel tank. As a result, fuel track drivers experience a lack
of safety during long-distance transmissions, and security at petrol pumps is essential. It is not possible
to prevent this form of crime by enforcing any rules. This can only be done if the thieves are
apprehended at the time of the crime. According to M. Saravanan’s report, the vehicle fleet industry
faces two key concerns: detecting fraud and abnormalities in vehicle movement. Fuel theft, loading and
unloading-related frauds, route variations, inefficient fuel maintenance, and frequent failures are some
of the major causes of major losses for organizations [1].
Methodology
This embedded system can prevent accidents from occurring, and proper preventive measures
are taken in this system. The ambulance service and the police station can easily find the location
as the location, along with the Google Maps link, was sent to their smart devices with mobile
network accessibility. The system consists of an eyeblink sensor, temperature sensor, alcohol
sensor, accelerometer, GPS module, GSM module, motor, buzzer, led, etc., and all these devices
are interfaced with the central microcontroller unit. We are going to use an eye blink sensor to
detect sleep by setting a certain time limit. If the driver gets sleepy, we can warn him. The
temperature sensor helps us detect the heat of the engine, and if the engine is overheated
compared to a normal condition, we can warn the driver. Alcohol sensors help us detect if the
driver is drunk or not. If he or she is overly drunk, the vehicle provides a warning, and the engine
stops functioning. The accelerometer detects the occurrence of an accident and sends a signal to
the microcontroller for further functioning. The GPS module provides us with the location,
speed, time, and date of a certain place where the vehicle is in real time. If an accident occurs,
the location of the accident that we get from the GPS is sent to the ambulance service and police
with the help of the GSM module. Everything might be all right after a simple accident, so the
driver can re-inform the ambulance service and police station in this case. On the contrary, an
ultrasonic sensor is used to measure the fuel level. The level is displayed on an LCD screen for
manual reading verification, and the level measured is also displayed on a webpage via an
ESP8266 Nedelcu. As the fuel level is continuously measured, a rate at which the fluid’s level
height decreases can be determined. Now, the rate at which the fluid level height decreases while
a vehicle is driven differs from when fuel is taken. The rate at which fuel level fluid decreases
when stealing must be increased. In the case of a fuel track, the level height of the fuel can vary
depending on the velocity of the track. However, the rate of change in fuel level must meet a
certain threshold. If the rate is higher, it can be viewed as fuel theft. As a result, there must be a
threshold value for the rate at which the fluid level decreases. A microcontroller can be set so
that if the changing rate of fluid level height exceeds a threshold value, a buzzer connected to the
microcontroller turns on.

Future Scope
In the accident prevention and fuel level monitoring intelligent control system, future development involves
the embedding of much more advanced machine learning algorithms capable of better hazard detection and
predictive analytics serving maintenance purposes. Lastly, integration with smart city infrastructure shall
facilitate the sharing of data in real-time with traffic management systems to respond and prevent accidents.
It can further be developed into a system that includes more environmental sensors and vehicle-to-vehicle
communication to raise the level of road safety and reduce fuel consumption. These will enable safety,
efficiency, and connectivity in vehicles.
