"QUAKE & VOLC: KNOW, PREPARE, SURVIVE"

LEARNING COMPETENCIES:
1. Describe the changes on the Earth’s surface as a result of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
(S6ES-IVa-1).
2. Enumerate what to do before, during and after earthquake and volcanic eruptions (S6ES-IVb-2)

GOAL:
Your goal is to educate individuals on earthquakes and volcanic eruptions and their preparedness
and response measures.

ROLE:
You are a disaster preparedness expert responsible for providing essential information and
resources to community members to ensure they are knowledgeable and well-equipped to handle
earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

AUDIENCE:
Community members residing in Barangay Dumoy, which is an earthquake and volcanic eruption-
prone area.

SITUATION:
Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions have been rampant in your city. As a disaster preparedness
expert, you have been assigned to develop an educational program on earthquake and volcanic eruption
preparedness for the different communities in your city. You were first assigned to the barangay with the
most earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, which is Baranggay Dumoy.

PERFORMANCE/PRODUCT:
The class will be divided into 5 groups. To accomplish this task, you will have a video presentation
that will be submitted 3 weeks from now through the teacher's gmail account. The students will follow
this procedure in their video presentation:
1. Introduction
➢ Start with an attention-grabbing introduction to the topic of earthquakes and volcanic
eruptions.
➢ Provide a brief overview of what community members can expect to learn during the
presentation.
2. Describe the changes on earth’s surface.
➢ Explain the geological processes behind earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
➢ Use visuals such as diagrams, maps, or photos to illustrate the changes that occur on the
Earth's surface due to these events.
➢ Discuss how earthquakes can cause ground shaking, surface rupture, landslides, and
tsunamis.
➢ Explain how volcanic eruptions can lead to lava flows, ash falls, pyroclastic flows, and
volcanic gases.
3. Before an earthquake or volcanic eruption
➢ Provide a list of preparedness measures that community members can take before such
events occur.
➢ Include tips such as securing heavy objects, creating an emergency kit, and developing an
evacuation plan.
➢ Emphasize the importance of education and awareness about the risks associated with
earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
4. During an earthquake or volcanic eruption
➢ Outline the recommended actions to take while an earthquake or volcanic eruption is
happening.
➢ Include instructions such as "Drop, Cover, and Hold On" during an earthquake and "Shelter
in Place" during a volcanic eruption.
➢ Highlight the significance of staying calm, following safety procedures, and seeking shelter
in designated areas.
5. After an earthquake or volcanic eruption
➢ Discuss the steps to take once the earthquake or volcanic eruption has ended.
➢ Cover topics such as checking for injuries, assessing damage to property, and listening to
official instructions.
➢ Provide guidance on how to safely return home or evacuate to designated shelters if
necessary.
➢ Stress the importance of being prepared for aftershocks or secondary volcanic hazards.
6. Conclusion
➢ Summarize the key points covered in the presentation, emphasizing the importance of
preparedness and safety.
➢ Encourage the audience to take proactive steps to mitigate the risks associated with
earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
➢ Provide resources for further information or assistance, such as emergency hotlines or
websites.
