Fuel Injection Timing Procedure January 2006

This service bulletin applies to all 400C engine models.

The fuel injection timing procedure that is published in the 400 Series Systems Operation Testing and
Adjusting Manual is being withdrawn. Due to an alteration in the fuel system design, the procedure described
in the current manual does not provide an accurate method of checking injection timing. The compact timing
device in the injection pumps operates on the priniciple of controlled injector leakage. Since there is an internal
leak path within the pump, the port closure can not be referenced to determine the start on the injection.
The engine injection timing is set during engine manufacture by the use of different shims (A1) between the
fuel injection pump (A2) and the engine block. Shim thickness is altered to change engine timing and ensures
that the engine is emissions compliant.

If an injection pump is removed in service, replace the old shims with new shims of the same thickness. Old
shims must not be reused.
Note: If the shim thickness is 0.5mm or below, installed beaded shims. If the shim thickness is above 0.5mm,
install the non-beaded shim, then install the beaded shim. Ensure that the beading on the beaded shim faces
upwards, towards the bottom of the fuel injection pump.
For engine models 404C-22, 404C-22T and marine engine models D2-55, select the correct combination of
shims from table 1:

Table 1
Shim Thickness (mm) Part Number Beaded
0.2 915-118 Yes
0.3 915-120 Yes
0.4 915-122 Yes
0.5 915-124 Yes
0.5 915-126 No

For engine models 403C-17 and 403C-15, select the correct combination of shims from table 2:
Table 2

0.5 915-599 No

For engine models 403C-07, 403C-11, marine engine models D1-20 and D1-30, select the correct combination
of shims from table 3:
Table 3

For engine models 402C-05 and marine engine model D1-13, select the correct combination of shims from
table 4:

table 5:
Table 5
Shim Thickness (mm) Part Number Beading
0.2 10000-07617 Yes
0.3 10000-07618 Yes

If the original shim thickness can not be determined, contact Peterborough Engines Centre through the
Technical Support Centre (+44 (0) 1733 582858 or technical_help@perkins.com). You must provide the full
engine number of the product being serviced.
The service solution in lieu of short engines are tested base engines. These engines will be fitted with a fuel
system and therefore injection timing will not need to be checked.
