GOVERNAMENT INDUSTRIAL TRAINING INSTITUTE, PEDDAPALLI

LESSON PLAN
NAME: SANTOSHKUMAR MANTENA UNIT/LESSON NO:
TRADE: ELECTRONICS MECHANIC DATE/TIME:
I.PREPARATION:
TITLE: COLOR CODING, POWER RATING , SERIES & PARALLEL OF RESISTOR .
1) Objectives: (At the end of the lesson the trainee shall able to)
a. Can explain about color coding.
b. Can say value of resistor using color cods & vice versa.
c. Can know about series connections of R.
d. Can solve mixed connection of R.

2) Teaching Aids: White board, marker pen, Projector, screen, pointer, etc.
3) Introduction:
a) Review: In last lesson we learn about Kirchhoff's voltage and current laws

b) Link:

c) Motivation: A resistor , very useful component but so small. It is used as per its value & it is
printed on its body. But sometimes color bands are there on its body. Why
those
color bands are there , their meaning we will learn about in this lesson.

II. PRESENTATION:

TOPIC INFORMATION POINTS SPOT HINTS

Color coding 3 ,4 or 5

4 band Reading from left to right from tan First band Show resistors
first digit
Second band - second digit

Third band - decimal multiplier Color code chart

Last band – tolerance

5 band
First 3 bands for 3 digits , 4th band for
multiplier & 5th for tolerance

Wire wound resistor

1st stripe is double the width of others.

Chip resistor coding

Body color : white or off white, dark film on

one side only ,end electrodes are c shaped, 3
or 4 digit marking.
Power rating It is physical property that depends on
resistor size.
Larger physical size , higher power rating.

Current is same & IR drops are according the

Series connection of R value
RT = R1+ R2+ _ _ _ _

Board work

TOPIC INFORMATION POINTS SPOT HINTS

Parallel connection Of R Current is according to values but IR drops Board work

are same in branch
1/RT = 1 / R1 + 1 / R2 + _ _ _

Mixed (series &parallel ) For obtaining higher power rating which is

of R equal to the sum of the individual wattage
ratings of the R.

III. APPICATIONS:

Questions:
1. How many bands are mostly seen on resistor body ?
2. What is series connection ?

Summary: Color coding is for those resistors which are too small & can't print value on their
body. So , color coding gives value to the resistors ,mostly carbon type. Some wire
wound resistors are also there.
Power rating is known by physical size of resistors. Wattage is the capacity of heat
resistance.
Series combination of resistors is ,joining of resistors one by others follow, in this,
current remains same but voltage drops are equal to applied voltage.
In parallel circuit, resistors are connected in that way , one end of resistors are with
+ve of supply & the others with -ve.

IV. TEST:
Assignment:
1. Give the color code of given resistors: 0.1 .n , 10 .n , 2.2k .n , 330 ¥.n , 56k.n
2. Explain about series connections.
3. Join three resistors of 1k.n in parallel manner & find out total resistance ,
current , voltage of that circuit.
