1. 10.0 dm3 of a gas are kept at 27 °C inside a cylinder fitted with a piston. Without changing
the temperature, the piston is slowly moved until the pressure is halved. Find the new
volume of the gas.
Same temperature, same quantity of gas (stated or implied)

P 1 V 1 = P2 V 2
and P2= ½ P1

(Or P α 1/V)

V2 = 2 × V1 = 20.0dm3

2. 0.48g of magnesium were added to excess hydrochloric acid at 27 °C and 1 atm.

28. a. overall non-ionic:

BaCl2 (aq) + Na2SO4 (aq) → 2NaCl (aq) + BaSO4 (s)

Overall ionic:

Ba 2+ (aq) + 2Cl- (aq) + 2 Na+ (aq) + SO42- (aq) → 2Cl- (aq) + 2 Na+ (aq) + BaSO4 (s)

Net ionic:

Ba 2+ (aq) + SO42- (aq) → BaSO4 (s)

b. [Na+] = 2x0.2x1/0.4 = 1M

[Cl-]= 2x0.2x0.5/0.4 = 0.5M

Moles of Ba2+ = 0.2x0.5 = 0.1

Moles of SO42-= 0.2x 1= 0.2

Therefore SO42- is excess.

[Ba 2+] = zero (no ions remaining)

[SO4 2-] = 0.2-0.1/0.4 = 0.25M
