Physical features of man during the old Stone Age was;

There three stages of man’s evolution associated with Old Stone Age are
Australopithecus, Homo habilis, and Homo erectus.

i) Australopithecus was hairy, with large jaws and teeth. He had a bony brow
and no forehead. His brain capacity was 500cm3. Australopithecus gradually
evolved into Homo habilis.
ii) Homo habilis had a large brain (500 cm3 to 800 cm3) and a skull of the same
shape as modern men. He also had a less protruding face and smaller jaws
and teeth compared to Australopithecus.
Also major step was the increased distance between the thumb and then
other fingers.
iii) Homo habilis developed into Homo erectus, an even more intelligent
creature.
Homo erectus was the first human ancestor to walk upright. He had a brain
capacity of 700 cm3 to 1,250 cm3 and could communicate through speech.

7. (a)

Attack from Tuaregs


i) These attacks were dominant after the decline of the Songhay Empire. Before
the attacks from the tuaregs, songhay empire provided security to the traders
crossing the Sahara desert, after the decline of the empire the Tuaregs
continuous attacks on traders created fear and insecurity that ultimately
undermined the trans-Saharan trade.
ii) Changing political condition in the Saharan region
In the second half of the 18th century and the first half of the 19th century,
Islamic religious movement occurred , these caused religious wars known as
jihads. These war were led by famous Muslims like Uthman dan Fodio, Alhaj
Umar,and Samori Toure. Their main intention was to reform Islam in west Africa
and make it stronger.
iii) Rise of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade
The rise of the trans- Atlantic slave trade on the coast of West Africa
led to the decline of the Tran - Saharan trade. The forest traders
stopped to trade with traders from west Sudan and northern America
and developed an interest in the slave trade with European slave
merchants along the Atlantic coast.

i) Matrilineal system is one in which children belong to their mother’s clan.


E.g. Zaramo, Matumbi, Ngindo and etc.
ii) Patrilineal is the one in which children take and follow the clan names
of their fathers. E.g. Sukuma, Gogo, Haya, Nyamwezi and etc.
