UNIT 4: CREATING A POEM

Writing an acrostic poem: applying the poetic techniques in the poem.

TYPES OF POETRY
Popular poetry types include haiku, free verse, sonnets, and acrostic poems.

Traditionally, haiku poems are three-line stanzas with a 5/7/5 syllable count. This form
of poetry also focuses on the beauty and simplicity found in nature.

Free verse poems will have no set meter, which is the rhythm of the words, no rhyme
scheme, or any particular structure. Robert Frost commented that writing a free verse
was like "playing tennis without a net."

The word sonnet is derived from the Italian word “sonetto,” which means a “little song”
or small lyric. In poetry, a sonnet has 14 lines, and each line has 10 syllables. It has a
specific rhyme scheme, and a volta, or a specific turn.

HOW ABOUT ACROSTIC POEM?

Acrostic poems, also known as name poems, spell out names or words with the
first letter in each line. While the author is doing this, they're describing someone or
something they deem important. Here is one example to illustrate the poetic form.

“A cry for help” by 12-year-old Samar Alkhudairi is an example of an acrostic poem

that tackles the tough issue of bullying:

Brutal beatings beyond the feeling of pain

Understanding this hurt might get me closer to being sane
Love is a myth
Life has become like a work of Stephen King
You don't know what it's like
I am treated like just some "thing"
Never to be kissed, comforted, or loved
Going the rest of my life never to be hugged

The following are the guidelines you could use to write an acrostic poem.

● Decide the theme or the subject of an acrostic poem.

● Choose two positive adjectives that are connected to describe your mothers.
These adjectives can be selfless & strong, creative & goofy, loving &
passionate, and creative & unique.
● Write down the letters of the theme or the subject in a vertical line to help you
plan the kind of pattern the poem should follow
● Demonstrate your skills to include the poetic techniques you have learned in the
previous lessons, such as word choice, rhyme, repetition, and the use of
figurative language (repetition, simile, metaphor, and personification and
alliteration) to bring out images and sounds in their poems.

Example:
Selfless & Strong are the two adjectives that describe the writer’s mother. These two
adjectives become the theme of the acrostic poem.

My Mom Taught Me

Since the day I was born

Every moment was blessed with love

Let me grow up to get reborn

For fitting my life like a glove

Love, love was a mother’s gift

Even when it was hard

She set me straight and let me freely drift

She was always there for me as lifeguard

She pushed me to do right thing

To feel that I could do anything

Remembering you to learn forgiving

Of faults both big and small.

Nobody’s equal to you, Mom.

Giving me peace and prosperous
