Frequency Distribution

Learning Competency: The learner organizes data in a frequency distribution table.M7SP-IVc-1

Learning Objectives:
A. Enumerate the steps in constructing Frequency Distribution Table for ungrouped data.
B. Organize data using Frequency Distribution Table.
C. Show the importance of frequency distribution table in analyzing the data gathered.
Mini Lesson
What is a frequency distribution?
The frequency of a value is the number of times it occurs in a dataset. A frequency distribution is an arrangement of
data that shows the frequency or occurrence of the different values in an experiment or study.
Types of frequency distributions
1. Ungrouped frequency distributions: The number of observations of each value of a variable.
 You can use this type of frequency if there are only small datasets.
2. Grouped frequency distributions: The number of observations of each class interval of a variable. Class
intervals are ordered groupings of a variable’s values.
 You can use this type of frequency if there are many datasets.
How to make Frequency Distribution Table?
a. Frequency Distribution table for Ungrouped Data
Tally marks are often used to make a frequency distribution table.
Example 1. Goal
Sam’s team has scored the following numbers of goals in recent games: 2, 3, 1, 2, 1, 3, 2, 3, 4, 5, 4, 2, 2, 3.
Sam put the numbers in order, then added up:
● how often 1 occurs (2 times),
● how often 2 occurs (5 times),
● etc,
And wrote them as a Frequency Distribution table.
How to make an ungrouped frequency table
1. Create a table with three columns and as many rows as there are values of the variable. Label the first
column using the variable name or the category “Score”, label the second column “Tally” and label the third
column “Frequency.” Enter the values in the first column.
2. Tally the numbers in each category. For example, the number three appears four times in the list so, put four
tally marks “IIII”.
3. Count the tally marks and write the frequency in the final column. The frequency is just the total.
Here’s an example of an ungrouped frequency distribution for our survey data: the scores of Sam’s team.

(x) (f)

n = 14
From the table we can see interesting things such as
● getting 2 goals happens most often
● only once did they get 5 goals
Example 2. Notebooks
These are the numbers of notebooks sold at a local shop over the last 10 days:
22, 20, 18, 23, 20, 25, 22, 20, 18, 20
Let us count how many of each number there is:

n = 10

Activity 1. Make Me a Table

Directions: Organize the data of the given situation below in a Frequency Distribution Table and write interesting
things you can see from the data after you have organized in a Frequency Distribution table.

Situation: Suppose you conduct a survey in which you ask 20 households the
number of pets they have in their home. The results are as follows:
1 4 9 5 2 8 9 2 6 2 2 6 1 2 4 6 3 3 3 3

You will be rated according to the following criteria:

Accuracy: 6pts, Completeness: 6pts, Artistry: 3pts, Neatness: 3pts, and Timeliness: 2pts Total= 20 points

Evaluation
Directions: Read each statement carefully. Write the letter of the correct answer on a sheet of paper.

1. Which of the following is NOT a part of a frequency distribution?

A. tally marks B. range C. category D. frequency
2. What is the second step in constructing Frequency Distribution Table for ungrouped data?

A. count the tally marks B. create a table C. tally the numbers D. arrange the values

For items 3 to 5, consider the following scores in a 25-item test: 13, 15, 15, 16, 17, 19, 19, 20, 22, 22, 22, 25
3. What is the total number of scores (n)?

A. 𝑛 = 12 B. 𝑛 = 13 C. 𝑛 = 22 D. 𝑛 = 25
4. How many times does the score 19 occur?

A. 4 B. 3 C. 2 D. 1

5. How many students got a perfect score?

A. 4 B. 3 C. 2 D. 1

Note: Activity 1 must be answered on an A4 bond paper, and at the back of it is the evaluation.
Types of frequency distributions
2. Grouped frequency distributions will be sent on Wednesday.
