One contact circuit is monitored by one relay If sev- cal branches of a citeuit are to be monitored, the required numberof relays can be connected to the same control circuit “The supervision relay detects interruptions, too high resistances caused by galvanically bad con- contacts, welding of the control contact, dis- appearing control voltage and voleage failures in the relay itself ‘The relay is available in three versions: ewo COMBIFLEX versions with different supply voltage ranges, to be mounted in a rack, and ‘one version provided with a base co be mounced ‘ona rail or on a plane surface. Current and voltages of the circuit monitored. For further information about relay types see next page The constant current generator (D) ofthe driver circuit feeds a small Ie eurrent of some 1.5-5 mA, depending on the relay ype used, through the circuit tobe monitored. The contact inputs 5-7 of SPER 1B1 C4 or 11-21 of SPER ICI of SPER 1C2 are connected over the NO control contact (f) and so the measuring current flows beeween the poles ofthe conttol voltage (se Figs 1, 2and 3). To avoid spurious CB tripping, for instance, in the event of a short ircuit in the control cir- cuit, the constant current generator circuit of SPER relays contain an internal current limic- ing series resistor. To secure operation, che contzol voltage over the liver citcuit is not allowed to fll below 40 V de for SPER 1B1 C4 and SPER 1C1 type re- lays, Bor che SPER 1C2 relay the minimum control voltage is 20 V de. The control voltage over the driver circuit can be calculated using the following expression: Uc- (Rex le) > 40 V de for SPER 1B1 C4 and SPER 1C1 or Uc- (Rex Ie) > 20 V de for SPER 102, where Uc = control voltage Te = measuring current Re = resistance of the coil controlled. Fale sicuations ‘The measuring current is measured by an opto- isolator circuit in the measuring circuit of the relay. In normal sevice the green LED "OK" on the front panel is lit and the output relay of| SPER 1B1 Cis operated, the change-over con- tacts 1-3 and 9-11 being closed, In the same way the output relay of SPER 1C} and SPER 12 is operated, and the change-over contacts 15-16 and 25-26 are closed. Should the control voltage fll below the minimum value permit- ted due to interruption, unteliable conneetion or activated trip contact, che output relay will drop off when a time delay of about 3 5 has expired. The red LED indicator "FAULI" is it, the green LED indicator "OK" goes out and the contacts 1-4 and 8-1 of SPER IB1 C4 close, The output relay ofthe relays SPER 1C1 and SPER 1C2 operates in the same manner and the contacts 16-17 and 26-27 ate closed. ‘Table 1. Contact welding if the tripping protection relay does not reset in time, Auxiliary voltage “To operate the supervision relay needs a con: sinuous auxiliary voltage. The supply voltage range ofthe elays type SPER 1B] C4 and SPER ICI is 40-265 V de, whereas that of the relay type SPER 1C2 is 20-60 V de. In general, the ausiliary supply voltage and the voleage of the circuit monitored are identical. The circuits are galvanically separated, Separate voltage sources Can be used for che auxiliary voltage supply to the relay and forthe voltage ofthe circuit moni- cored “The driver circuit ofthe relay operates independ- ently of the measuring circuit and the output circuit so differenc voltage levels are permitted Should the auxiliary voltage supply be inter- rupted, the indicator LEDs of the supervision relay go out and the change-over contacts ofthe operated output relay operate without time de- lay inthe measuring circuit. The contact opera- tion of the relay i the same as fora faule in the circuit monitored. ‘The supervision relay can be connected 0 te ceive the supply voltage from the conttol cir cuit monitored, over the connection wites of the driver circuit. A condition, however, is that the control coil ofthe circuit monitored is not affected by the increased current consumption of about 7-16 mA, depending on the type of supervision relay, and_that the residual voltage over the circuit monitored is above 40 V de when SPER 1B1 C4 or SPER 1C1 is used and 20 V de, when SPER 1€2 is used Note! the voltage supply described above the sion relay operates instancancously and the red LED indicator "FAULT™ remains dark. ‘An undelayed alarm signal is obtained via the ‘output relay, also at normal conteol contact op- 1e connection of the auxiliary voltage supply for the different types of supervision relay i il- lustrated in Figs 4 and 5 and in Table 2 in the section "Connections" Connection diagram + Suppl vokage VecH TH “TS Fig. 4. When separate, parallel contact circuits of the same control circuit are to be monitored, ceach of theze circuits has to be provided with its own relay, Fig. 6. Monitoring of parallel contact circuits with separate supervision relays When the supervision relays are connected in parallel, ig should be noticed that each relay drivesa current of about 1.5-5 mA, depending con the type of relay used, through the contiol circuit, monitored. The currents ate summed up in the wip or relay coil controlled by the cit- cuit. To avoid the operation of the control relay coil being affected by these currents, the number of parallel supervision relays has to be limied The voltage drop over the conceal cil increases with the number of supervision relays connected in parallel. The voltage deop has to be kept on such a level that the difference between the aux iliary voltage of the control circu and che volt- age drop over the control coil, that is, the re sidual voltage over the circuit monitored, is be low 40 V de or 20 V de, depending on the relay type usd. Lower voltage values are an indication ofa fa in the circuit, for instance, poor galvanic con- tact, and will. produce an alarm signal via the ‘contact of the output relay. Fig. 7. Simplified supervision of parallel contact circuits using one common supervision relay Example 3 Example 4 (modified 97-09) To a certain extent, the number of supervision relays can be reduced by parallelling the con- tacts of the control circuit as illustrated in ex- ample 2. Then the wiring of the installasion —— \ | ct If che control voltage of the circuit monitored is high enough, several supervision relays can be connected in series in the same circuit, as illustrated in Fig. 9 above. With such a connec- tion all che conérol contacts connected in series are monitored. Then the control voltage has to be high enough to prevent che residual voltage distribuced between che separate series-con- nected circuits from falling below 40 V de or 20V deat 1.5-5 mA current flowing through the contol eo. ‘The control voltage through a separate driver circuit can be calculated using the following expression’ je (Rexle) 5 4g for SPER 1B1 C4 and SPER 1C1 or Ue(ReAI) sry for SPER 1€2, should be catried out accordingly. Unless the system ie continuously supervised, this method reduces the reliability of the system. ‘When the control citcuic includes two or more NO contacts in series, the supervision relay is connected overall ofthe contacts. The supervi- sion relay is connected to the plus pole (+) of the control voleage at the first of the contacts and to the control coil side at che last of the contacts in series, see Fig, 8, The circuit between ‘the contacts will nor, however, be monitored in ‘his application of the relay. Fig. 8. Fig. 10, Two supervision relays in serieewith seties-connected contacts with self-holding Example 6 For breaking the control voltage the circuit breaker control circuit includes an auxiliary con- tact (bl) connected in series with the control coil ‘To prevent the supervision relay from provid ing spurious alarm signals, for instance, at cit cuit breaker operation, the measuring custent of the control eiteuit is routed so as to by-pass the break contact (hi), through the auxiliary contact (h2) and a curtent limiting resistor By. The resistance is calculated so that the current cover the auailiary contact and the resistor docs not affect the operation ofthe control coil, when the control contact is closed. The voltage drop over the resistor and che coil must be low enough, to prevent the residual voltage over the driver citcuic of che supervision relay from fall ing below the minimum values specified for the different relay types ‘The exeralcutet limiting eesistor Ry is de- pending on the ausliay voltages ofthe supe Mision tay The resistances fa the most came monly ued voltages ae given in Technical data’ ai Tes Tv. :) Fig. 11, Supervision relay with an auxiliary contacc (h) and an external custent limiting resistor Ry Dimension drawing and mounting The supervision relay is available in three ver sions: SPER 1B C4, SPER 1C1 and SPER 1C2.
