Description
As part of the Perkins continuous product improvement
programme, Perkins is releasing a revised Low Pressure Fuel
System for the Electric Power sector for use on the 1103 and 1104
mechanical product.
Features/Benefits It was found under certain operating conditions that the current fuel
priming pump (Electronic Fuel Pump Module - EFPM) can suffer
premature failure if exposed to high inlet depressions typically
associated with the use of remote fuel storage tanks, small bore
fuel supply lines and/or contaminated fuel as well as when
undergoing extended engine storage.

The new Low Pressure Fuel System is more tolerant to these

conditions when installed in line with the recommendations /
installation parameters contained within this bulletin.
Availability
The planned introduction for the supply of 3 and 4 cylinder
production engines fitted with the new fuel-priming pump will be
July 2010.
Pricing Information This specification change introducing the Low Pressure Fuel
System option will carry an on-cost. Account Managers will
communicate the cost impact directly with their customers.
General Comments Currently the fuel priming pump is supplied fitted to the engine.
The Low Pressure Fuel System will need to be assembled off
engine. The pump sub-assembly will be supplied as a loose part.
Customers should specify a pre filter \ water separator within their
fuel system as shown in the Typical Scheme on Page 7.

Some standard Electric Power build lists are currently supplied with
a water separator 2656F823. However, as part of this change a
new water separator will be included in the loose parts kit, part
number 2761804. Details of the change can be found below.

In place of the current fuel priming pump (EFPM), a new ECO filter
canister will be fitted. The ECO filter will use the existing fuel filter
service element with the part number remaining unchanged.

Further information on this change can be found below.

New Water Separator – 2761804
This change will only effect those EP build lists which currently have a 2656F823 water
separator specified in the loose parts kit.

The new water separator will be supplied as a loose part. No additional fuel connections are
required, as they are integral with the head.

Current Water Separator – 2656F823

The water separator and associated connections will be removed from the loose parts kits and
replaced with the option detailed above.

Installation Guidelines
Fuel Pump Positioning
The fuel priming pump must be mounted off engine and installed on the base frame of the
generator set, as close to ground level as possible

Typical Scheme

The scheme below shows the position of the new fuel priming pump assembly within the fuel
circuit. The fuel circuit needs to be followed to ensure the correct operation of the fuel system.

1 Remote Fuel Tank 5 ECO Filter (10 Micron)

2 Pre Filter \ Water Separator 6 Leak Off Rail for Fuel Injectors
3 Electric Priming Pump 7 Fuel Injection Pump
4 Fuel Pressure Regulator 8 Internal Fuel Tank

The maximium allowable inlet depression to the fuel lift pump must not exceed -26kPa (3.77
psi) when ran from the internal or remote fuel tank. This includes the restriction due to the
primary fuel filter or water separator.

Note 1: Installing the fuel pump outside of these guidelines may invalidate the warranty.
Note 2: The maximum allowable length for fuel lines is 10m (33 ft) when operating from a
remote fuel tank. The internal diameter of the fuel lines should be between 8 to 12.7mm
(0.31496 to 0.50000 inch).
Note 3: If using a remote fuel tank it should be positioned at the same level as the generator
set.

Fitting Instructions

1. Carefully remove the fuel priming pump assembly from the packaging and locate on the base
frame of the generator set, as close to ground level as possible also ensuring it is to the
guidelines detailed in the scheme on page 8.
2. Secure the fuel priming pump to a suitable place on the base frame using the two rubber
coated clips that are provided. Ensure that the clips are positioned at each end of the fuel
priming pump body.
3. Fit the water separator and connect the generator set fuel supply pipe.

4. Remove the transit cap from the assembly and connect the input (3) of the fuel priming pump
assembly to the water separator.
5. Remove the transit cap from the assembly and connect (1) the fuel priming pump assembly
to the ECO filter.
6. Connect the Deutsch electrical connection.

Priming the Fuel System

A separate “Engine News” Service Bulletin will be published detailing the approved priming
procedures for the new fuel priming pump option when used with the new water separator as
detailed above (when supplied) and other proprietary primary fuel filters.

Servicing Requirements

If the Perkins pre filter / water separator is specified, it should be serviced \ inspected in line with
the Maintenance Interval Schedule which can be found in the Operation and Maintenance
Manual (OMM), which states:

Interval Action
Fuel System Primary Filter/Water Separator -
Daily Check
Drain
Fuel System Primary Filter (Water Separator)
Every 500 Service Hours Element - Replace
or 1 Year Fuel System Secondary Filter (ECO Filter) –
Replace (1)

Note (1): Also at 500 service hours the isolators for the ECO filter should also be replaced.

Note: If an alternative pre filter \ water separator is sourced, then the manufacturer’s service
schedule should be followed.
