How do we Capture CO2?
To produce a pure stream of CO2 for sequestration or utilization, the CO2 must be separated
A first option is to separate the CO2 from the flue gas after combustion
A second option is to separate oxygen from the air before combustion

Solvent Benefits
Relative to 30% MEA solutions, B&W’s
selected solvent demonstrates:
• Superior resistance to oxidative degradation
• Superior resistance to thermal degradation
1500 T/day design
• Elevated pressure operation
• Reduced volatility
• Increased mass transfer rate
Regenerable solvent absorption technology uses an advanced
• Reduced regeneration energy
solvent to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from power plants

carbon capture
30 MWth Test Facility

Demonstrated at a large scale

and is commercially ready
• Oxy-fuel combustion for use with coal to
produce CO2 in EOR evaluated 1979 at the
request of a major oil company
• With the support of the U.S. DOE in 2001,
B&W developed this advanced carbon
capture technology for steam generation
• Set the standard as the largest oxy-combustion The technology produces a concentrated CO2 stream suitable for
ever demonstrated (B&W’s 30 MWt plant) sequestration and other uses, such as enhanced oil recovery

Oxygen-fuel Combustion with OxyBright
 Can be applied on a new unit or retrofitted to
an existing unit (better new)
 Pure oxygen is substituted for combustion air
 Flue gas is recycled to maintain the flue gas
mass flow through the steam generation
surfaces to preserve the steam cycle
 Produces high purity CO2-rich flue gas
 Readily applied to package boilers that already
employ flue gas recirculation for NOx control
 Depending on unit size requires on-site
storage of oxygen or Air Separation Unit (ASU)
