 BRIEF HISTORY
The two pioneer missionaries Rev F.W. Savidge and J.H.
Lorrain, who arrived in Mizoram in 1894 and left for
Arunchal in 1897 came back to Mizoram as Missionaries
of the BMS in 1903 where they first landed at Tlabung
and moved north where they then settled at Serkawn,
Lunglei. From the beginning the pioneer missionaries
employed education and literature as means of
evangelisation for the Mizo people. They are rightly
regarded to be the ones who laid the foundation of
Christian literature and education in Mizoram and they
also started medical work, which was always mentioned
in their annual reports. BMS missionaries were also
successful in developing Mizo literature, poetry, music
and drama by including them in the school curriculum
and school concerts.
By 1944, the Christian community within the BMS field
was 23,108. The BMS sent Rev. R.F. Tucker, BD, in 1945 and
Jubilee Bible School was inaugurated in 1946. The school
was run jointly by the BMS and BCM on fifty- fifty support
basis. The school was upgraded to Missionary Training
Institute in 1991. It was again upgraded by the decision
of the Assembly and reconstituted and inaugurated
on 18th October 2000 as an Academy of Integrated
Christian Studies, a BD college with other training, and
was immediately granted provisional affiliation by the
Senate of Serampore College (University).
In January 1959, four (4) Departments were made to look
after the different works of the Church. The departments
were- (i) Education, (ii) Medical, (iii) Literature, (iv)
General department. From this time onwards, a new
era was ushered in the life of the Mizo Baptist Church.
From January 1959, each department was under its
departmental committee. This transition from mission to
church is a significant milestone in the history of BCM.
MISSION & OBJECTIVES
While the Outreach Mission concentrates its work in
outside of Mizoram. The primary objective of the Baptist
Church of Mizoram is to evangelize and plan the churches,
but as already mentioned the method used to achieve
its primary objectives has always been determined by
the context. In obedience to the Great Commission, the
Baptist Church was doing mission work from the time of
its inception. As a result of evangelical awakening called
“born again movement”, there was missionary movement
which eventually gave birth to a new department called
Zoram Baptist Mission in 1966, and that was renamed as
Mission and Evangelism in 2000, again in 2011 Mission
and Evangelism Department was named as “Mission
Department”.
At present BCM operates in seven states in India among 20
people groups or tribes and has missionaries to five foreign
countries. About 600 churches have been established
which consist of 48,680 members. Apart from sending
Mizo missionaries, the Church also supports several local
workers, and at present the number is 233. On an average,
the number of new converts is ab out a thousand in a year.
DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS
I. CENTRAL:
▪ Administrative: For a smooth functioning and
administration of BCM there’s the ‘Administrative
Department’ and overseeing it is the ‘Administrative
Committee’
▪ Christian Education: This department is established
to teach the church members the truth of God, to live it
and to progress in the Christian life. The Department is
headed by the Christian Education Committee.
▪ Fellowship: This department the BKHP (Women
Fellowship), TKP (Youth Fellowship), BMP (Men
Fellowship) and KNP (Children Fellowship) which are
the useful hands and feet of the church within the BCM
and in charge is the ‘Fellowship Committee”.
▪ Finance & Pension: ‘Finance & Pension Department’
headed by the ‘Finance & Pension Committee’ is
established to manage the funds of BCM.
▪ Pastoral & Ministry: This Department, headed
by the ‘Pastoral Committee’ aims to plant, feed and
administer the church. There a Sub-Committee 'Revival
& Evangelism Committee' under this Department.
▪ Property: This department is headed by the ‘Property
Committee’ and it manages the property of the Church.
▪ Theological Education: This department is
established to provide effective, holistic and effective
Theological Education to meet the needs of the country
and the Church. It is headed by the ‘Theological
Education Committee’.
▪ Worship: Headed by the ‘Worship Committee’, this
department is responsible for the development of
spiritual worship and music in the church.
II. MISSION
Mission Department is responsible for the preaching
of the gospel, an important ministry of the BCM.
Overseeing this department is called the ‘Mission
Board’.
III. SERVICE
▪ COMMUNICATIONS: It aims to spread the Gospel
through written and audio-visual media and in charge
of this department is the ‘Communications Committee’
is in charge of this department. There’s also a Sub-
Committee called the ‘Editorial Board’.
▪ LITERATURE & PRINTING: It is established to distribute
and print various written media for the church. The
‘Literature & Printing Committee’, ‘Literature & Printing
Management Committee’ and ‘Publication Board’ are
responsible for the services of this Department.
▪ EDUCATION: This department aims to educate and
guide people to be a matured, responsible, resourceful
true believers in God. Overseeing this department is
the ‘Education Committee’.
▪ MEDICAL & HEALTH: This department is established
to continue the healing ministry of the Lord Jesus and
to heal people mentally, spiritually and physically. It is
headed by the ‘Medical & Health Committee’.
▪ RELIEF & DEVELOMENT: Headed by the ‘Relief &
Development Committee’, this department aims to
promote harmony, development and development of
society based on Christian teachings and doctrines.
▪ SOCIAL CONCERN: This department has three
ministry divisions namely- Baptist Councelling Center
(BCC), Baptist Church Orphanage (BCO) and Baptist
Rehabilitation Centre. It is headed by the ‘Social
Concern Committee’.
