Margaret Thatcher was the first woman to become a Prime Minister not only in the United Kingdom but also in
all European countries. She was also the only Prime Minister to serve 3 successive terms in the UK from 1979
to 1990. Margaret was born on October 13, 1925, in Lincolnshire, England. She was an excellent student
at school and was admitted to the University of Oxford. She studied chemistry there before graduating in
1947. While she was studying to become a lawyer, she worked as a research chemist. Later, she became
a tax law barrister. The first time she ran for Parliament was in 1950, but she didn’t make it. Then in 1975,
she became the leader of the party and was elected Prime Minister in 1979. Margaret Thatcher was known
to make a lot of changes that transformed the UK. One of them was to allow private companies and people
to manage government-owned corporations such as British Gas and British Telecom as she believed that
private companies could run those services better. Thatcher was famous for being tough and sticking to her
