1 Purpose:
Purpose of this document is to provide a detailed procedure for carrying
out the Preventive maintenance of 400kV SF6 Circuit Breakers in a safe

and effective manner to improve the reliability and to upkeep the long
term healthiness of the same.

2 Scope:
This document applicable for the bi annual preventive maintenance of all
the 6 no’s of 400 kV Circuit Breakers installed in the Phase-1 switchyard .

3 Responsibility:
Maintenance Apply for PTW, receive PTW, Guide technicians in
Engineer carrying out the job and clear the PTW.
Area Operator/SCE: Issue of PTW.
Personal Supervisor Supervise the job continuously without leaving the work
area till the work is completed or suspended.
Maintenance Execute the job safely and efficiently as per the
Technician: Standard Maintenance Procedure and fill the Checklists.

driver and all Safety PPE’s like Helmet, Dust mask,


Goggles, Cotton Gloves, Shoes
Spares / consumables Contact Grease, Suitable Nut & Bolts, Contact Cleaner,
Cotton waste etc.

7 Precautions:
 Take PTW before commencing the maintenance
 Ensure the proper isolation prior to commence to work.
 Ensure the Isolation of correct Breaker and its corresponding Isolators.
 Ensure the deployment of trained / skill workforce. Proper tool box talk
meeting to be conducted in the site prior to startup of the job with the
team
 Cordon the working area from charged bays by using caution tapes &
ensure persons working in cordoned area only.
 The maintenance personnel should be aware of breaker schemes,
sequence of operations, mechanical and electrical interlocks
 Ensure the use of proper tools and tackles.
 Use safety belt/nets when working at height.
 During the functional checks, do not loop or bypass the electrical
interlocks and if required to bypass please notify at maintenance
register.
 Ensure no people around the breaker / bus section area while charging
from Remote / SCADA /DCS
 Follow standard EHS and engineering practices throughout the job.

8 Procedure:
8.1 Opportunity based outage:

 Ensure that the breaker, isolators are opened and tagged.


 Close the Earth Switches (Towards Breaker side) which were given for
Breaker local maintenance.
 Discharge the Equipment manually by 400kV Discharge rods.
8.1.1 Breaker Poles:
 Check porcelain for damage and clean the entire pole, mechanical
housing and Marshalling Box.
 Check grounding/earthing pad for looseness and tighten if found loose.

 Check foundation bolt of breaker support structure, marshalling box


and the nut and bolts between mechanical housing and support
structures for looseness and tighten if found loose.
 Open the HV terminal pads and clean with cloth and apply anti
oxidation contact specified electrical grease (ABB Part No: 5316-381-
C).
 Check and tighten all nut and bolts of terminal connectors of breaker
poles.
 Check SF6 gas leakage with leakage detector.

8.1.2 Marshalling Box and Central Cubicle:


 Clean the CB/MB inside properly.
 Check the lubrication of operating mechanism rotating parts and if
required apply the specified grease (Aero shell grease 223 / ABB Part
No: 5316-381-A).
 Check all the circlips are in proper position.
 Check free movement of trip and closing plunger. Dismantle if found
sticky or jam. Clean, lubricate and assemble.
 Clean and lubricate spring, all hinges and linkages of the breaker
mechanical housing.
 Check the control wire terminations for tightness in operating
mechanism boxes.
 Treat all contactor/switches and electrical component with cleaning
spray in order to protect from rusting and ensure free movement.
 Check the operation of the Spring Charging Limit Switch.

8.1.3 Auxiliary Checks and Testing:


 Measure the Insulation & Winding resistance of spring charging
motors.
 Measure the resistance of close and trip coils.
 Check the SF6 Gas pressure and top up the gas if the pressure is
below 0.7 MPa.
 Check the dew point of the SF6 gas and the value should be -
40degrees.
 Measure the contact resistance of each interrupter (shall be less than
110 micro Ohms).
 Measure the open & close timings all poles (Opening time 19+2 ms &
Opening 35-50 ms).

 Check the anti-pumping circuit.


 Note down breaker operation counter reading for all the three poles.
For any change in the counter reading justify the reason of breaker
operation.
 Check Pre-close and post-close supervision circuit up-to Relay end.
 Clear all the tools and tackles from the location and clean the area.
 Clear the PTW
 Fill up the protocol sheet with all relevant data. Record any
abnormalities in the remarks column of the protocol.
 Submit all records to Electrical Maintenance Engineer for review. If
any deviation observed with respect to previous results, inform to
higher authority for further course of action.
 Update the data in the computerized maintenance management
system.
 Close the Work Order.
