The mayor of your community organize a gathering over the weekend


with the aim of sharing a note from the ministry of culture and tourism in
Togo. which invite all citizens to take part in the maintenance work of some
touristic sites in your country. During the speech, you hear several people
complaining about the useless work that will have to be done because of
the uselessness of touristic sites in Togo. some other people even dare to
say that there are no touristic sites in Togo.

As a student in the class of 1ère, help these people to motivate themselves


by giving them the impacts of tourism in Togo while giving them some
examples of touristic sites in the country.

➢ INTRODUCTION

Tourism is the practice of travelling to places outside your usual


environment for personal purposes including leisure and curiosity. Art and
tourism are important sector of activity for the Togolese economy. they
have effects on the economic and socio-cultural levels. Economic effects
are: increasing of tax revenue, personal income growth and the creation of
additional employment opportunities.
As for the socio-cultural impacts, we can talk about the interactions
between people with different cultural background, attitudes and behaviors,
and relationships to material goods.

Travel:(verb) the action of going from a place to another one.

Tourist:(noun) a person who is travelling or visiting a place for


pleasure.

Artefacts:(noun) is a man-made object, such as pieces of art and


tools, that is of particular cultural, historical or archaeological
interest.

Sites:(noun) an area of ground on which a town, building or


monument is constructed.

Galleries:(noun) it’s a privately owned building or room where


people can look at and buy works of art.

Museums:(noun) a building in which objects or historical,


scientific, artistic or cultural interest are stored and exhibited.

Craftsmen:(noun) a skilled worker who practice some trade or


handicraft.

1.a- the maid washes the plates every morning.
b- the plates are washed by the maid every morning.
2.a- Chinese engineers are building new roads in Africa.

❖ Passive voice with modal verbs

Rule: Modal verb + be + pp

Examples:

AV/The driver must buy a new tyre.

PV/A new tyre must be bought by the driver.

❖ Passive voice with double objects

Verbs such as to offer, to give, to send, to teach, to show, to tell


often admit two objects: a direct object and an indirect object. They are
known as ditransitive verbs. For this kind of verbs, there are two
possibilities in passive voice. Remember to insert ‘’to’’ before the indirect
object if you start with the direct object.
Example:

AV/ The manager gave them instruction

PV/They were given instructions by the manager.


Instructions were given to them by the manager.

❖ Passive voice with imperative sentence

Rule: let/should/must be + past participle

Example:

AV/ open the door

PV/ let the door be opened.


The door should be opened.
The door must be opened.

❖ Passive voice with verbs of opinions

Examples:

AV/ people say that George is a clever assistant.

PV/ George is said to be a clever assistant.

2) The use of since, for, ago and during

❖ The use of ‘’since’’ and ‘’for’’

Rule:

present perfect/ present perfect progressive + since +


beginning of the action

present perfect/ present perfect progressive + for + duration of the action

Examples:

Mary has been talking about her nightmare since this morning.
This man has prayed in the temple for about three hours.

❖ Others use of since

It is + duration + since + simple past

Example: it is month since Mr. Olou saw his children.

It was + duration + since + past perfect

Example: it was month since Mr. Olou had seen his children.

❖ The use of ‘’ago’’

Rule: simple past + duration + ago

Examples:

I travelled to cotonou three years ago.


Some decades ago, this place was a thick forest.

❖ The use of ‘’during’’

Tense used: present, past and future.


Example:
1) I talked to him during, his birthday party
2) During his birthday party, I will talk to him
3) She talks to him during his birthday party

Translate into French.

It is said that tourists are attracted by African cultures and traditions. They
are fascinated by African historical sites. Through places such as sacred
forests and traditional festivals, fetish markets, tourist get to know about
African beliefs, spirits, and gods. Therefore, it is important to our countries
to promote our culture and arts by developing culture infrastructure, valuing
traditional festivals, and maintaining historic sites to make them more
attractive and competitive.
Translation:

Il est dit que les touristes sont attirés par les cultures et traditions africaines.
Ils sont fascinés par les sites historiques africaines. A travers les places
telles que les forêts sacrées et les festivals traditionnelles, les marchés
fétiches, les touristes découvrent les croyances africaines, leurs esprits et
leurs divinités. Ainsi, il est important pour notre pays de promouvoir notre
culture et notre art en développant les infrastructures culturelles, en
valorisant les festivals traditionnels, et le maintien des sites historiques pour
les rendre plus attractifs et compétitifs.

➢ IV/ WRITING (formal letter)

Formal letter or official letter is addressed to associations, organizations or


government personal like the president of the republic, the ministers or
members of parliament for official purpose (purpose related to the
authority’s functions under the law).

A formal letter is made up of:

1) Sender’s address

It is written at the top right hand corner of the paper. It’s usually is included
in letterhead.

2) The date

The date line is used to indicate the day when the letter was written. It’s just
under the sender’s address.

3) Recipient’s address

It is written on the left side of the paper. It can be punctuated or


unpunctuated.

4) Salutation

Write dear sir, or dear madam.

5) Purpose

The purpose is written in capital letters and underlined. It is optional.

6) Body

You must use formal language, and avoid abbreviations and contracted
forms. Your letter must be precise and concise.

7) Subscription

Use yours faithfully, followed by your full name on the next line.

1. Letter of inquiry
In this letter, it is necessary to explain clearly what you would like to have
information about.

Here, you place an order for goods or products. Therefore, it is necessary
to give the receiver details of your order.

Example: referring to your advertisement on canal plus TV, I would like to
send you an order for …

3. Letter of complaint
Here, you express, you express your dissatisfaction about something.
Example: I am afraid I have got a complaint about …

4. Job application letter


It is a letter in which you apply for a job. It concludes detailed information
about you: age, sex, nationality, marital status, educational background,
professional experience, special qualities, etc…. you can end the letter on a
positive note, expressing a wish to meet your employer.

In conclusion, we can say that our country is full of beautiful and historical
sites which are memory of our history and our culture. We must take care of
these heritage because not only the remind us of our past but they also
promote and develop our country by the money they made by all the
tourists and foreigners people who come from everywhere in the world to
see them.
