Make better decisions by challenging your expectations

By Cheryl Strauss Einhorn

Many experts have proven that people live under the influence of various biases and
expectations. Because of their life experience, they often have expectations and prejudices
according to experience, which may not always be right. These expectations can guide the
decision-making process because human thinking is shaped by past actions and past outcomes
of various situations. Likewise, in most cases, people do not even realize that expectations are
so related to making a final decision. The expectations that people have in their heads when
making important decisions lead them to act on assumptions that may not always be true. In
addition to expectations, biases play an important role because biases are embedded in human
expectations, which are always part of thinking. Some ways for people to feel bias is to face the
expectations and assumptions they have that will ultimately lead them to a final decision. The
most significant thing is to mention your own behavior and assumptions about behavior.
People's behaviors can influence the objectivity of viewing situations, but also the behavior of
other participants involved in the decision-making can also give a great influence on the
direction in which the decision-making will go. In addition to behavior, it is important to
understand the expectations around the information that is necessary for human to be able to
make a decision. It is necessary to think carefully about the type of information to be collected
and the information that will be collected by the other participants in the decision-making. It
is important to understand that people are different and that not everyone has the same opinions,
attitudes and beliefs. Advice and information must be viewed from a number of different angles
to come up with the most effective solution for the future. Ultimately, it is important to pay
attention to the structure. It is important to see if there are any deadlines or restrictions that
could affect the decision. Some factors such as stress, anxiety and tension can also negatively
influence making a final decision by interfering with reasonable thinking and leading the wrong
way. The aforementioned components of BIAS are - our behavior, our information, our ability
to think critically about decisions and external forces that influence decisions. The author of the
original article, Cheryl Strauss Einhorn, states that BIAS allows us to examine our expectations
so that we can reduce the impact of bias, assumptions and judgments in order to better engage
with others and our decisions.
