What is contextual theology?

Base on my understanding, contextual theology is a theology which applied on the culture


context. It is an adaptation of the others cultures. So, it can also be referring as enculturation,
in the sense it depends and accepts the teaching of every culture and interpret the teaching of
the bible base on the culture context. Contextual theology also uses the principles from the
Bible but it filters the Bible through the lens of contemporary points. At the same time
contextual theology demands the theological system of linguistic, socio and political, cultural
and ideological factors as well. For a better understanding there are many examples but the
one prominent example could be found in 1 Cor 11:4-7, Paul’s teaching on head covering.
Pual teaches the church in Corinth depend on the city culture context which mean women
who cover head showed her submissive toward the husband. Therefore, to adapt the teaching
to various other cultures is contextual theology.

Why contextual theology is important?

Contextual theology is extremely important even in today context. Ther are uncountable
numbers of cultures in the world. In order to socialized and Gospelized the Good News,
contextual theology is necessary. It brings all people to unity.
