PERIODIC MAINTENANCE (Except for Europe)
The following tables show the normal maintenance schedule. Depending upon weather and atmospheric
conditions, varying road surfaces, individual driving habits and vehicle usage, additional or more frequent
maintenance may be required.
Periodic maintenance beyond the last period shown on the tables requires similar maintenance.

Use standard type spark plug under normal conditions. The hot MT
type spark plug is suitable when fouling occurs with the standard
SMA581C spark plug under conditions such as:
I Frequent engine starts AT
I Low ambient temperature
The cold type spark plug is suitable when spark knock occurs with
the standard spark plug under conditions such as: TF
I Extended highway driving
I Frequent high engine revolution
3. Check insulator for cracks or chips, gasket for damage or dete- PD
rioration and electrode for wear and burning. If they are exces-
sively worn away, replace with new spark plugs.
Gap (Nominal): 1.1 m (0.043 in) FA
RA
CAUTION:
I Do not use a wire brush for cleaning.
I If plug tip is covered with carbon, spark plug cleaner may BR
be used.
Cleaner air pressure:
Less than 588 kPa (5.88 bar, 6 kg/cm2, 85 psi) ST
Cleaning time:
Less than 20 seconds

I Checking and adjusting plug gap is not required between
change intervals. HA
4. Install spark plugs. Install ignition coils to spark plugs and
reconnect harness connector of ignition coil.

Changing Engine Coolant (Cont’d)
8. Fill reservoir tank (pressure side) with engine coolant up to filler GI
neck as shown.
Follow instructions attached to anti-freeze container for mixing
ratio of anti-freeze to water.
Engine coolant capacity (With reservoir tank):
With heater
14.7 (13 Imp qt) EM
Pour engine coolant through engine coolant filler neck slowly
to allow air in system to escape.
9. Install reservoir tank cap (pressure side). LC
CAUTION:
MMA123A
Do not install the reservoir tank cap (pressure side), which
provided with valves, to radiator. EC

10. Fill reservoir tank (open air side) with engine coolant up to
“MAX” level and then install cap.
11. Warm up engine to normal operating temperature. TF
12. Run engine at 2,000 rpm for 10 seconds and return to idle
speed.
I Repeat 2 or 3 times. PD
Watch engine coolant temperature gauge so as not to overheat
the engine.
13. Stop engine and cool it down. FA
I Cool down using a fan to reduce the time.
MMA124A
RA
14. Remove the reservoir tank filler cap (pressure side) and check
engine coolant level.
I If necessary, refill reservoir tank (pressure side) up to filler neck BR
with engine coolant.
15. Refill reservoir tank (open air side) to Max line with engine
coolant. ST
16. Repeat step 11 through step 15 two or more times.
17. Warm up engine, and check for sound of engine coolant flow
while running engine from idle up to 2,000 rpm with heater RS
temperature control set at several positions between COOL
and HOT.
JMA201D
I Sound may be noticeable at heater water cock. BT
18. If sound is heard, bleed air from cooling system by repeating
steps 11 through 17 until coolant level no longer drops.
I Clean excess engine coolant from engine.

Changing Engine Coolant (Cont’d)
— FLUSHING COOLING SYSTEM —
1. Close drain plugs.
2. Install reservoir tanks.
3. Fill radiator and reservoir tank (pressure side) with water and
close radiator cap and reservoir tank cap (with valve).
4. Run engine and warm it up to normal operating temperature.
5. Rev engine 2 or 3 times under no-load.
6. Stop engine and wait until it cools down.
7. Drain water.
8. Repeat step 1 through step 7 until clear water begins to drain
from radiator.
