BRIEF INTRODUCTIONN
In cutting the final pattern, there are always standard procedures to
be observed to avoid mistakes which would affect the shape and style of the
garments.

Pattern cutting is an art form which has a technical function. Anyone

can cut patterns and have technical knowhow, but not necessarily has the
eye to create a great aesthetic or to develop delicate details. The importance
of a good pattern cutter should not be underestimated. If you desire to
create a good output or garment you must take into consideration the
technical skills in cutting the patterns.

This module will teach you the essentials of pattern cutting to realize
your own designs. Have fun.

5
LESSON 5.1 CUTTING THE FINAL PATTERN

Cutting Line- the line where the pattern is to be cut

Final patterns consists all the necessary symbols, number of pieces per
part and garment design that will guide the fabric cutter and sewer. Final
pattern is cut at the allowance provided for seams and designs.

STEPS IN CUTTING FINAL PATTERN

1. Have everything
handy. Gather all the
materials needed for the
cutting process.

2. Use a pair of sharp

cutting shears with long
even strokes.

3. Place one hand on the

pattern close to the
cutting line and hold
before cutting the fabric.

4. To cut out the piece,

rest the cutting shears on
the table so that the
pattern is slightly raised.

6
5. Cut first the large
pieces, then the small
ones.

6. As you cut, go around

the table instead of
pulling the materials.

7. Cut the entire garment

at one time.

8. After cutting each

part, put it aside.

7
ACTIVITIES

Activity 5.1.1
Objective: Cut final patterns according to job specifications.

Materials: Cutting Tables, Patterns, Scissors

Directions: Cut your final patterns following the standard procedures.
1. Prepare the needed tools and materials;

LESSON 5.2: LABELLING OF PATTERNS
After cutting your final pattern, the next thing you must do is to
label your patterns. So, let's take a look at the most common pattern
symbols, what they mean, and how to use them when sewing!

PATTERN SYMBOLS
• Center front (CF) is a line placed in a fold of fabric indicating that the
pattern edge has been placed exactly on the fold of the fabric that is
on grain.
• Fold line ( ) refers to where the pattern is to be folded.
• Notches ( ) are V-shaped symbols along the cutting line.
• Grainline (↔) are arrowhead symbols with instructions for placing
the pattern on grain.
• Darts ( ) are indicated by two broken lines for stitching and a
solid line at center for folding.
• Buttonholes ( ) are indicated by a solid line having a short line at
right angles to one and when horizontal or at both ends when vertical.
• Solid lines ( ) are used also to indicate center fold lines, some
hemlines, placement for pocket and trimmings that go on the outside
of the garment.
• Name of pattern piece refers to the parts of pattern
• Name of person refers to the customer/client
