LESSON 3: DRAFTING BASIC PATTERN
FOR MEN’S APPAREL

EXPECTATIONS
You will accurately draft basic and block pattern of men’s apparel
based on costumer’s specifications using the appropriate tools and
materials.

Specifically, this will help you to:


1. Identify the parts of polo shirt and trouser
2. Draft basic or block pattern of polo shirt correctly and accurately
3. Appreciate the importance of using appropriate tools for drafting
polo shirt.

Let us determine how much you already know about taking client’s body
measurements, I am sure you are ready and excited to answer the Pre-test. Good

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

In today’s fashion world, pattern making has become necessary for a


fashion designer to make garments of different body sizes. Pattern
Drafting is an important part of fashion designing and requires tremendous
skills and practices. If you will be able to understand the basics of pattern
making you will have an insight into how your garments will take shape and
also it is the art of translating a designer's basic idea for a garment into a
real piece of apparel that fits the human body in a flattering way.

LESSON 3.1 PARTS OF MEN’S POLO SHIRT

Systematic - doing according to a fixed plan or system; methodical.


Draft--- A preliminary sketch of a working plan
Hemline- a line at the bottom of a garment turned and finished done by
hand or machine.

Parts of men’s polo shirt

1. Collar-a band of material around the neck of a shirt, dress, coat, or


jacket, either upright or turned over and generally an integral part of
the garment.
2. Armhole- each of two openings in a garment through which the
wearer puts their arms.
3. Sleeve - the part of a garment that wholly or partly covers a person's
arm.
4. Placket-an opening or slit in a garment, covering fastenings or giving
access to a pocket, or the flap of fabric under such an opening.
5. Cuff- the end part of a sleeve, where the material of the sleeve is
turned back or a separate band is sewn on.
6. Pocket– a pocket made of a separate piece of cloth sewn on to the
outside of a garment.
7. Yoke - a part of a garment that fits over the shoulders and to which
the main part of the garment is attached, typically in gathers or
pleats.
8. Front Bodice– Front part of Polo Shirt.
9. Back Bodice– Back Part of Polo Shirt.
10. Label - a small piece of paper, fabric, plastic, or similar material
attached to an object and giving information about it.
11.TopCenter– opening part of polo shirt where different kinds of
fasteners are also attached.

V. Procedure:

1. Gather all the tools and materials needed.


2. Take body measurements and have it checked by your teacher.
3. Draft the block and final patterns of the polo shirt.
4. Prepare the fabric for layout and cutting.
5. Layout and cut the material.
6. Transfer construction marks from pattern to fabric.
7. Assemble the polo shirt.
8. Press, fit and evaluate.
9. Make alterations if needed.

A.FRONT PATTERN
Procedures:
1. Draw a perpendicular line, from left
side measure 4 inches and from the top
measure 2 inches. Mark corner as A.
2. From A to B is 1 inch. Square out B.
3. From A to C is 2 inches. Square out C.
4. From A to D is 3 inches. Square out D.
5. From A to E is ¼ measurement of
Chest. Square out E.
6. From A to F is the length of Polo Shirt.

NECKLINE
7. From B to G is 3 inches.
8. From D to H is 3 inches.
9. D to I is 1 inch.
10. Connect B to H using ruler then from
H to J is 1 inch.
11. Connect D to I to J to G using French
curve.

ARMHOLE
12. From C to K is ½ measurement of Shoulder.
13. From E to L is ¼ measurement of chest.
14. From L to M is 1 inch.
15. From L to N is 2 ¼ inch.
16. Connect K to N using ruler then get the midpoint of it. Mark the
midpoint as O.
17. Connect O to M using French curve.

HEMLINE/BOTTOM
18. From F to P is ¼ Measurement of Chest.
19. From P to Q is 1 inch.
20. Connect M to Q using meter/yard stick.

21. From D to R is 1 inch.
22. From R to S is 1 inch.

Procedures:

3. From A to C is 1 ½ inches.Square out C.
4. From B to D is ¼ measurement of Chest.
Square out D.
5. From B to E is the length of Polo Shirt.

6. From A to F is 3 inches.
7. From C to G is 3 inches.
8. From C to H is 1 inch.
9. Connect B to G using ruler then from G
to I is 1 inch.

ARMHOLE
10. From B to J is ½ measurement of
Shoulder.
11. From D to K is ¼ measurement of
Chest.
12. From K to L is 1 inch.
13. From K to M is 1 ¼ inches.
14. Connect J to M using Ruler then get the midpoint of it. Mark the
midpoint as N.
15. Connect N to L using French curve.

HEMLINE/BOTTOM
16. From E to O is ¼ measurement of Chest.
17. From O to P is 1 inch.
18. Connect L to P using Meter stick or L-square.

How to get Armhole Measurement

Your Armhole measurement will be based on your Drafted Front and


Back Patterns. Look at the picture below.

Example:
Front = 7 inches
Back = 9.5 inches
Total = 16.5 inches

1. Draw a perpendicular line, from left side measure 10 inches and from the
top measure 1 inch. Mark corner as A.
2. From A to B is 4 inches. Square out B.
3. From A to C is 8 inches. Square out C.
4. From C to D is 1 ½ inches. Square out D.

LEFT SIDE OR BACK PART OF SLEEVE


5. From A to E is ½ measurement of Armhole.
6. C to F is ½ measurement of Arm Girth/Arm Circumference.
7. D to G is ½ measurement of Arm Girth/Arm Circumference PLUS ½ inch.
8. Connect A to E to F to G using Ruler.

9. From A to H is 1 inch.
10. Get the midpoint of A to E and mark it as I.
11. Get the midpoint of A to I and mark it as J.
12. Get the midpoint of E to I and mark it as K.
13. From J to L is ½ inch upward.
14. From K to M is ½ inch downward.
15. Connect H to L to I to M to E using french curve.

RIGHT SIDE OR FRONT PART OF SLEEVE

16. From A to N is ½ measurement of Armhole.


17. C to O is ½ measurement of Arm Girth/Arm Circumference.
18. D to P is ½ measurement of Arm Girth/Arm Circumference PLUS ½
inch.
19. Connect A to N to O to P using Ruler.

ARMSCYE

20. From A to Q is 1 inch.


21. Get the midpoint of A to N and mark it as R.
22. Get the midpoint of A to R and mark it as S.
23. Get the midpoint of N to R and mark it as T.
24. From S to U is ¾ inch upward.
25. From R to V is ½ inch upward.
26. From T to W is ¼ inch downward.
27. Connect Q to U to V to W to N using french curve.

D. EXECUTIVE COLLAR

Executive Collar – a common collar used for men’s polo shirt.

How to get Neckline Measurement:


Your Neckline measurement will be based on your Drafted Front and
Back Patterns. Look at the picture below.

Example:
Front = 4 inches
Back = 3 inches
Total = 7 x 2 = 14

 Project planning is necessary before making the actual project. It


guides us in constructing the project.

 In order to have a well-fitted Polo Shirt and Long Pants,


dressmakers and tailors must clearly understand the procedures
in drafting the pattern.

 A skillful dressmakers and tailor must be knowledgeable in using


tools and equipment in drafting the pattern.

 Personal Measurements Record (PMR) is an important tool in


gathering personal data of clients.
