BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Taking body measurements is one of the most important steps in
making a custom-made garment. Tailors need to pay a lot of attention to
every small detail while taking measurements for specific garment. Despite
being an obvious necessity, there are many reasons why it is an important
task for the tailors to take accurate body measurements. A well-fitted
garment can enhance not only the look of the person but also the
personality. The measurements for an attire depend on the style, type of the
garment and the gender of the customer.

6
LESSON 2.1: THE L-SQUARE

Column - a vertical division of a page or text.

Corner -a place or angle where two or more sides or edges meet.
Indispensable – absolutely necessary
Perpendicular -the property of being perpendicular is the relationship
between two lines which meet at a right angle (90 degrees).

L-SQUARE

Every Tailor has an L-Square,

sometimes they called it a tailor’s square or
rule for pattern drafting; these are
indispensable. The L-square is one of the most
basic of the pattern making rulers. This ruler
helps to create accurate 90° angles and
straight edges. It measures, rules, and squares
simultaneously. L-Square Divides the garment
into the desired measurement. It perfects
squares and is useful in making straight lines
and numbers. It can also function like a tape
measure. It has two arms connected
perpendicularly.

1. The longer arm has twenty-four (24) inches long.

2. The shorter arm has fourteen (14) inches long.

A. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE LONGER ARM L-SQUARE

1. In front of the longer arm, there are six (6) different columns. The
numbers found in every column are equal.

2. The six (6) column parts are:

a. 1/24
b. 1/12
c. 1/6
d. 1/3
e. 2/3
f. By inch or the 24 inches column

3. At the back are numbers made from 1 to 24 inches. At the corner of

the L-Square is an aluminum that holds the two arms in a 90 degree
angle. Both ends of the L-Square are secured with metal sheets.

7
B. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SHORTER ARM

B. CHARACTERISTICS OF THE SHORTER ARM

1. Starting from the corner of the short one we can observe the
following:
a. 1/32
b. 1/16
c. 1/8
d. 1/4
In other L-Square the shorter arm has 16th, 8th, 4th, ½ and by
the inches.

2. The back part of the arm contains a four-inch measurement. The

two arms are secured with a curved metal sheet on the inner portion.

8
ACTIVITIES

Activity 2.1.1
Objective: Gather data about the functions of measuring and shaping tools.

A. Directions: Make a list of Measuring/Shaping devices that you have

used in garments construction in your dressmaking classes, and give its
functions.

B. Directions: Based on your experience as a dressmaking student, make

an essay on how you used L-square in every garment you draft in your
dressmaking classes. Write your answer on your activity notebook.

LESSON 2.2: BODY POINTS AND LINES

Jugular Notch – in between of collar bones.

Joint -a structure in the human body at which two parts of the skeleton are

1. Center Neckline – it is where the jugular notch located.

2. Chest Line – same level of your heart or upper part of bust.
3. Waistline – it is under your rib.
4. Hipline- it is broader part hip.
5. Knee – the join connecting your upper and lower legs.
6. Ankle – it is located to your ankle joint/bone
7. Shoulder – it is from the side of neck down to the shoulder tip.
8. Elbow – it is located in between the upper and lower arm.
9. Wrist – is the joint located between lower arm and hand.

10
LESSON 2.3: TAKING BODY MEASUREMENTS FOR MEN’S APPAREL

Ankle- the point or region between the foot and the leg
Circumference– the measurements taken around the parts of the body
Crotch- an angle formed by parting of two legs
Length- a measure of distance or dimension
Perpendicular– forming a right angle with each other or with a given line
Torso - the trunk of a human body
Wrist - the point or region between the hand and the arm

A perfect fit requires perfect measurements of the body. Using correct

tools and accurate reading of measurements are essential for accurate
pattern drafting. That is why efficient and accurate taking of body
measurements depend on how competent a tailor/dressmaker is. Following
these important rules will assure a good benefits and confidence of work.

provide an allowance.

6. In measuring long sleeves, ask the client to bend halfway his elbow.

7. Always have a ready Personal Measurement Record for every client so you
can be sure that all measurements can be taken correctly and accurately.

measure on shoulder tip down to the elbow (half
way bent) and to the wrist

12
G. WRIST-Encircle tape measure in line and
around the wrist.

H. LENGTH OF SLEEVE (SHORT) - Place tape

measure on shoulder tip down to the desired
length of short sleeve.

I. CIRCUMFERENCE/ARM GIRTH - From the

measured short sleeve length, place tape measure
around the arms with the desired circumference.

J.NECK - Place tape measure around the base of

the neck. From the measured short sleeve length,
place tape measure around the arms with
the desired circumference.

K. LENGTH OF SHORT PANTS - Place end of the

tape measure on waist down to the desired length
of the short pants

L. LENGTH OF LONG PANTS- Place end of tape

measure on waist down to the desired length of
the long pants. Place the tape measure in
line and around the ankle joint.

13
M. KNEE CIRCUMFERENCE - Place the tape
measure in line and around the ankle joint.

N. ANKLE- Measure around the circumference of

a long pants along the ankle.

O. CROTCH OR RISE- Have your client sit on

chair, then place tape measure on waist location
down to the seat, add 1 inch to the measured
length. Hold the tape measure at the center of the
