Statement of Purpose

Torrens University
Master of Information Technology (Advanced)
About Myself:
My name is Ranbir Singh and my DOB is 27 th June 1994. I had the best education and the best support system at
home. I am what I am today because they have inculcated strong values and a sense of responsibility and integrity in
me. Today, I am strong enough to my choices and to follow my dreams because I have the support of my parents.

My Passion and Academic Background:

I think the world of Computing and IT always took precedence over other choices. The world of Computing is a fast
paced one where changes are taking place even as I write this Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE). I started learning
more about computers when I was in 8 th standard. This always fascinated I to see how much one could learn from
technology and how much knowledge is stored within it. I wanted to do more to contribute to this incredible world
and, therefore, I decided to study animation and multimedia technology as my specialized area of study.

Academic
2010 - 2011: Year 12th (Humanities) from PSEB with 68.4%
2011- 2014: Bachelor of Animation and Multimedia Technology from Punjab Technical University with 60%

Work Experience:
My 1st job clicked in June 2014 at Maxtel Infosystems Pvt. Ltd. as UI/UX Developer and worked till 2015. In July
2015 I worked at Prihit Technologies Pvt. Ltd. As a Rotoscopy Artist and worked until November 2015. In January
2016 I got opportunity to work at Ooops Info Solutions Pvt. Ltd. as a Graphics Designer. I worked in this company
until April 2019.

Academic Journey in Australia:

My father is the most wonderful person and he knows that I aspire to achieve. He always motivated me and
with his ideas and suggestions to pursue for Master’s Degree, which will shape me and make me qualifies fit
for modern globalized cultures, technology and era. I got excellent opportunity to study in Australia at Flinders
University, Adelaide but once I started my course there, I realized that I could not relate my future career with such
course as it was more towards fundamentals of computing, e-business, project management etc. As I was in new
country and try to fit myself, as I do not wanted to waste my chance of studying in overseas. I enrolled myself at
Holmes Institute in 2020 for Master of Business Administration thinking of making my career more diversify with
business field. I came back to India due to COVID-19 pandemic but unfortunately, travel restrictions stay for longtime
and as I was in India, my student visa was expired. All this made me sad and depress but my family motivated me and
suggested me to start my job again.

Thought the decision eventually ended up in me gaining nothing new until date, re-joined my pervious
company at same Graphic Designer designation from 15 February 2021, and presently working here only until
now. I knew that the effort of the day would eventually pay up in future. Working hard, I kept my focus on my
goals and this time I did intense research on courses, consult few education consultants also, and quickly apply
for Master of Information Technology (Advanced) program at Torrens University. I received offer letter from
Torrens University on 16th July 2022 and submitted my documents for GTE in August 2022.

Why I did not choose to study Master of Information Technology (Advanced) in India?
Indian Universities: Craving the thirst to keep increasing my skills and knowledge about the Computer Technology
and the IT world I decided to go for a postgraduate degree in the field. I decided to take the postgraduate course of
Information Technology with the latest trend of the world and I was fascinated with the possibilities of the course. I
want to study in University environment where student get more opportunities, exposure regarding their field and on
campus guest lectures visits from big industries. I started searching Indian universities and came across some of the
most reputed universities like VELS University in Chennai, Barkatullah University in Bhopal. These universities were
providing a course in Information Technology but as a major of Master of Science. Searching about some more
Universities I found the Chandigarh University was providing the course of Master of Information Technology for 2
years at the semester fee of 39,500 INR.
Course Structure of IT programs have fixed curriculum, whereas in Torrens University, Australia offering
ultimate flexibility in its course structure, which allows student to design their own course as per their interest.
Unfortunately, in Indian institute such flexibility cannot see in its course structure. When I checked the entry
requirements, I encountered an issue that I have been introduced to it before too. The seats in the university are
reserved and limited. The reservation based on Caste, Religion, Region and other sorts of minorities in Indian Society
makes it very challenging the students to overcome the chains of un-fulfillment. As I kept searching about the
universities in India, I found many shortcomings in the education system of the universities that I wasn’t able to accept
for my career. Indian education system has become out-dated, its methods of serving education recognized only at
national level. Moreover, it imparts only bookish thesis. Academics framework been emphasized more on bookish
knowledge and this same I faced at the time of my Bachelor of Science Degree apart from that six months
industrial training session. There is limited course availability and there are no research opportunities available. When I
was facing these disadvantages and was having difficulties to find the right direction then I that an international
degree from a foreign university will fulfil my ambition. The option of International degree was perfect as I could easily
overcome the deficiency of Indian University’s education system and give myself a global recognition. I started looking
into the requirements of the International courses and discovered that I needed to go through the English test first. I
started preparing myself for the test and after completing this requirement the next big question in front of me was
the choice of country and university that I was about to affiliate to.

Global Research:
Information systems combine hardware, software and telecommunications networks, that people build and
use to collect, create and distribute useful data. Similarly, I was looking for an education program that combines
theoretical knowledge, conceptual learning, practicum and network of partners, in order to become a professional.
I began by searching for Master of Information Technology (Advanced) courses in Finland. There were many
institutes in Finland offering Master of Science (MSc) degree in Information System such as University of Jyvaskyla
Faculty of Information Technology, LUT School of Information Technology Science, Tampere University,
Haaga-Helia University of Applied Science, University of Oulu, EIT Digital Master School, Abo Akademi
University, Metropolia University of Applied Science, among many others. Finland is acclaimed for Qualitative
Education System, which is uniform whether you are an elite or a commoner, the quality of education is brilliant with
professional teaching staff. Finland has low pollution, less corruption and beautiful landscape. However, my research
showed that in Finland, everything is sold at a higher cost, from food, clothing, housing and transport. Although most
people speak English in Finland, sometimes language can be a barrier, now the winters is very cold and temperatures
can drop below 30 degree centigrade with longer nights as the sunrises very close to early afternoon. In view of higher
cost, language constraints and long cold winter nights, I decided not to study in Finland.

After doing a lot of research on different countries like; Germany, The United Kingdom’s and my home country
India and making a comparison with Australia. I found countries like; Germany require a German equivalent of a
bachelor’s degree for doing a postgraduate degree in Germany, Apart from this basic requirement, the German
universities require students to score high points in GMAT or GRE. Adding to this, IELTS or TOEFL along with a working
knowledge of their native language.

Moreover, countries like UK provide one year of postgraduate degree in the universities like Bath Spa University
offering M.SC. Cyber Security for January Intake for 1year duration and tuition fees is 14,700 GBP. Cardiff Metropolitan
University, University of Cambridge and King’s College London but I couldn’t locate the course. During my research, I
noticed that UK’s universities are more focus on business course for postgraduate program. University of Manchester,
University of Glasgow, Anglia Ruskin University offering either M.Sc. Computer Science or M.Sc. Cyber Security etc.
Initially I thought it would save me plethora of time but by further examination, I got to know that whether it is a one-
year degree but the combinations of subjects were not of my interest.

Reason for opting to study in Australia:

The biggest reason as to why international students are interested in studying in Australia is the quality of
Scientific Research. Australia is among the top investor in the world of Research & Development. Australia is at the
forefront of new technology and innovation because nearly 2% of all scientific papers in the world come from
Australia. These remarkable achievements can prove to be invaluable for international students who want to study in
Australia. New technologies are adopted by Australia at a much faster rate than most other countries in the world.
Australia has the highest rates of internet access in the world. Scientist and Researchers from Australia have been
responsible for many breakthroughs and technological developments around the world. Australia boasts sixteen Nobel
Prize Recipients for a country which has a relatively smaller population. Australia has a strong tradition of world-class
research and development which has benefitted millions of people around the world such as the discovery of acquired
immunological tolerance in 1960. Australia’s commitment to scientific research and discovery can be seen through the
“Backing Australia’s Ability Initiative”, a 2.9 billion dollar fund invested from 2011 – 2016 for economic and scientific
innovation. Australia has the world famous Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO),
which is the largest government research and development agency in the country. CSIRO is the most diverse research
institutions in the world which is involved in more than 750 research activities with scientific organizations and
agencies in more than 80 countries around the world. CSIRO conducts researches in the field of health, agriculture,
information technology, manufacturing, sustainable energy, mining & minerals, space, environment and natural
resources.
Australia is a technological advance and forward thinking country which can be seen in their education system.
Australian classrooms are equipped with the latest technologies and laptops are allowed in most lecture halls and
classrooms. Education institutes in Australia seek to prepare their students for successful career in their chosen fields
by providing them with modern and innovative facilities. There are 35 Special Research Centers and Key Centre of
teaching and research in Australian universities, which are undertaking high level research, providing a varied
undergraduate, postgraduate and specialized professional education courses in a number of fields. Australia has 63
Cooperative Research Centre that foster joint research between universities and private industry. Australia offers
several research opportunities to young and promising professionals. The opportunity to work in such an impressive
and promising environment is a huge draw for international students for studying in Australia. These students benefit
from the technologies available to them, as well as the chance to conduct research of their own.
I was in search for an education, which was modern, state of the art facilities, research oriented,
technologically advance, and which could extend an opportunity to be involved in research &development; the
Australian Universities met these parameters.

to stay. Accommodation is of different types and their price is also different. We need to live with the weekly expenses
calculation. A student accommodation starts from $140 and varied up to $220 per week. Before going to
University I will be booking one of these accommodations which will come within my budget. I will be doing more
research on living arrangement beside these.
