MOTOR CONTROL

2ND ASSIGNMENMT

DIPLOMA LEVEL 2

Due date : September,25th 2023

QUESTION ONE

A. Describe the methods of speed control of DC motors.

B. The armature of a 250V DC motor draws 15A when operating at full load and has a resistance of
2 ohms. Determine the counter EMF produced by the armature when operating at full load.
C. A DC shunt motor is running with a measured no-load speed of 1775rpm. When full load is
applied, the speed drops slightly to 1725 rpm. Calculate the percentage speed regulation.

QUESTION TWO

A. Draw a block diagram of a programmable logic controller system showing the five major
components along with the function provided by each.
B. List down 5 advantages of programmable logic controller over hard-wired electromagnetic relay
controller.
C. Explain the principle of operation of a contactor relay.

QUESTION THREE

A. State five conditions that can make the motor to stop.

B. Explain why series D.C motors are preferable used in tractions that shunt D.C motors.
C. State the four methods of starting an AC three phase induction motor.
D. The speed of a DC motor can be varied by varying the flux, armature resistance or applied
voltage. State the four methods of speed control of shunt series DC motors.

QUESTION FOUR

a. A common strategy for AC induction motor control is the use of variable frequency drive unites,
or VFDs,
i. Explain what varying the frequency of power to an AC induction motor accomplishes, and
ii. Why this might be advantageous.
b. Explain the operation of star delta
c. Explain how plugging is applied in AC motors.
