ZERO LIQUID DISCHARGE (ZLD) INDIA

Water is a scarce resource and due to Urbanization and Globalization water usage will
increase in the coming years. Industries like power, oil, and gas, pharmaceuticals, and
chemicals generate a large volume of wastewater which contains solid waste, organic waste,
toxic and non-toxic chemicals which further affects the environment. In fact, many
government and industries have come up with initiatives to reduce water waste by installing
ZLD, which in turn will reduce water wastage, and help them attain a sustainable
environment.
The key driver for zero liquid discharge is a growing concern about the impact of wastewater
discharge on the environment. Such concern is resulting in increased regulation and
limitation of wastewater discharges. Organizations in India are targeting ZLD for their waste
because they can sell the solids that are produced or reuse as a part of the industrial process.
For example, salt is the by-product we get at the last stage of ZLD. This salt can be used in
the textile process.
Zero liquid discharge is an advanced water treatment process which purifies and recycles the
wastewater at the end of the industrial process with zero liquid waste at the end. Zero liquid
discharge at Arvind Envisol is achieved in the most energy efficient method as it saves
around 80% of the energy compared to the conventional ZLD techniques used by other
companies. The reason why we are so efficient in this process is our patented polymeric film
technology which we are using in Mechanical vapour recompression evaporator (MVRE).
Features of Arvind Envisol’s ZLD system are
 Saves up to 80% energy compared to other ZLD technologies.
 Approximate 95% of liquid can be recovered out of the liquid waste fed to the system
for treatment.
 Treat and retrieve valuable by-products from your waste (i.e. salts and brines).
 Produce a dry solid cake for disposal.

1.Mechanical Vapour Recompression Evaporator

(MVRE)

MVRE is an energy recovery evaporator which compresses a low-pressure vapour and

produces a low volume of vapour with high pressure and temperature. In MVRE influent is
heated with steam and the vapour produced are compressed and sent to a heat exchanger
where it gets condensed and we get pure water at the outlet. Generally, MVRE is used before
MEE to reduce the TDS concentration of influent. This system is available in polymeric film
technology. After RO effluent is fed into MVRE to remove high volatile compounds which
were not removed in the previous process. In this process water recovered is approximately
80%.

MVRE is available in polymeric film technology.

ZLD Plant Manufacturer in

India
Shachi Engineering is a leading ZLD plant manufacturer in India. ZLD plant or commonly
known as zero liquid discharge plant is a typical wastewater treatment system that aims to
eliminate liquid discharge of waste streams by recovering water and concentrating solid
waste for disposal.

In a ZLD plant, multiple treatment processes such as reverse osmosis, evaporation, and
crystallization are utilized to separate water from solids, resulting in a closed-loop water
system where water is reused and solid waste is sent to a landfill or used for beneficial
purposes.

The ZLD plant is beneficial for industries where water is scarce or costly and strict
environmental regulations require minimal liquid discharge.
ZLD Plant offers 3 key benefits:

Minimize Waste
ZLD plant can help to fully minimize wastewater. ZLD is water treatment process where all
the water is recovered from wastewater & leaving solid waste for final disposal.
Save Water
Treated water from the ZLD plant can be reused for other industrial processes including
boiler feed & domestic application including gardening which need fresh water. This helps to
save precious water.

Increase Value
In some applications, solid salt is produced as by-products, that can be resold. Also, some
chemicals can be put to use in the initial process. So the actual waste produced is very less &
the by-products add value to your process & business.

Working Principle of ZLD Plant:

The ZLD plant typically involves several stages, including pre-treatment, evaporation,
crystallization, and drying, to achieve complete removal of all contaminants and achieve zero
liquid discharge.

The working principle involves the following steps:

1. Pre-treatment: In this stage, the wastewater is screened to remove large

particles and suspended solids. The pH level of the water is also adjusted, and
chemical treatments are applied to remove dissolved solids and heavy metals.
2. Evaporation: The pre-treated wastewater is then fed into an evaporator,
where the water is heated and converted into steam. The steam is then
condensed to recover the water, leaving behind a concentrated brine solution.
3. Drying: The concentrated effluent from evaporator is fed to either spray dryer,
agitated thin film dryer, centrifuge or crystallizer to finally convert slurry
effluent into powder or solid form for final disposal. remaining liquid is fed
into a spray dryer, where it is dried to produce a solid powder.
4. Final solid disposal: The dried powder or solid is then collected and disposed
of according to local regulations.
By following this process, ZLD plant can achieve zero liquid discharge, meaning that all
wastewater is treated and reused, and there is no discharge of liquid waste into the
environment. ZLD technology is increasingly being adopted by industries such as power
generation, petrochemicals, and pharmaceuticals to address environmental concerns and
reduce water consumption.

Product Description

Every Industry produces both liquid, solid and air emissions. To overcome all the
environmental problems and to meet the pollution control norms, Acmefil has
developed a Zero Liquid Discharge System by which industrial effluent treatment
is economically handled introducing the technology of evaporation, concentration,
salt separation, optionally high-temperature spray drying.

The specific technologies that will make up a facility's ZLD treatment system will vary
greatly depending on (1.) the volume of dissolved material present in the waste, (2.)
the system's required flow rate, and (3.) what specific contaminants are present, but
will generally consist of a three-step process with the following "blocks" of treatment:
1. Pretreatment and conditioning; removes simple things from the wastewater
stream that can be filtered or precipitated out, conditioning the water and
reducing the suspended solids and materials that would otherwise scale
and/or foul following treatment steps.
2. Phase-one concentration. Concentrating is usually done with membranes like
reverse osmosis (RO), brine concentrators, or electrodialysis. These
technologies take this stream and concentrate it down to a high salinity and
pull out up to 60–80% of the water.
3. Evaporation/crystallization. After the concentration step is complete, the next
step is generating a solid, which is done through thermal processes or
evaporation, where you evaporate all the water off, collect it, and reuse it. The
leftover waste then goes from an evaporator to a crystallizer, which continues
to boil off all the water until all the impurities in the water crystallize and are
filtered out as a solid.

What Is A Zero Liquid Discharge System?
A Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system is a wastewater treatment process that
aims to remove all liquid waste from a facility, resulting in no liquid discharge
being released into the environment. This is typically achieved through a
combination of technologies such as evaporation, crystallization, and reverse
osmosis. As a zero liquid discharge plant manufacturer and supplier in India, our
ZLD system goal is to reduce the environmental impact of a facility and comply
with strict discharge regulations. The system is commonly used in industries
such as chemical, pharmaceuticals, power, and desalination.
At zero liquid discharge plant in India we typically use a combination of
technologies for ZLD systems such as evaporation, crystallization, and reverse
osmosis to remove water from the waste stream. The remaining solid or vapor
waste can then be safely disposed of or recycled.
ZLD systems are commonly used in industries such as power generation,
chemical manufacturing, and mining where large amounts of wastewater are
produced. They are also used in areas where water resources are scarce and
strict regulations are in place to limit water discharge.
Overall, ZLD systems can be costly to install and operate, but they provide
significant environmental benefits and can help facilities meet compliance
requirements.

Basic ZLD Plant Components At ZLD

Plant Manufacturers In India
The components of a ZLD treatment system in a discharge plant vary based on
the amount of dissolved matter in the waste, the desired flow rate of the system,
and the specific contaminants present. Our ZLD Systems are designed for high
TDS and high COD streams which are called high strength effluents. Such
effluents treatments are mainly Thermal treatment using MEE and MVR systems
in combination with Stripper, ATFD, Centrifuges as per effluent parameters. This
may include pre-treatment of feed as well as post treatment of condensate in
accordance with water characteristics. Standard components are usually
sufficient, but customization may be necessary to address specific requirements.
ZLD is a highly tailored process due to the diverse industries and waste streams,
and additional features or technologies will depend on the specific needs of the
facility.

Working Principle Of Zero Liquid

Discharge Plant
Evaporation systems are known to be more expensive than membrane systems,
with crystallizers being the most costly of all. Hence, when possible, membrane
systems can be utilized to minimize the capital and operating costs of an
evaporation system.
Membrane systems can be used to pre-concentrate the wastewater, which in
turn can significantly reduce the size requirement of the backend evaporation
system and therefore, the capital and operating costs. It is important to note
that to achieve high recoveries in a wastewater membrane system, proper pre-
treatment, such as softening and pH adjustment, is often necessary.
Vertical tube falling film concentrators are commonly used to concentrate low
Hardness low TDS brine solutions, below saturation. This helps to minimize the
design capacity of a downstream forced circulation crystallizer, as long as the
fouling elements, such as hardness and silica, are within the permissible limit of
the Falling Film Evaporator.
Forced circulation crystallizers are commonly used to concentrate brine
blowdown from upstream concentration equipment, although small wastewater
flows can be treated directly with a forced circulation crystallizer. These
crystallizers are designed to manage the crystallization of all salts, sparingly
soluble as well as highly soluble sodium salts, without excessive scaling and
cleaning frequencies. However, this robustness comes at the cost of higher
specific energy consumption and higher specific capital cost compared to Falling
Film Type Evaporators.
The solids generated by a forced circulation crystallizer are generally dewatered
using a centrifuge or suitable filter. The collected solids are typically landfilled in
a conventional landfill as long as they pass the Toxicity Characteristic Leaching
Procedure (TCLP) testing.

Importance Of Zero Liquid Discharge

Plant
The availability of freshwater is becoming increasingly scarce, and industrial
processes are threatening it on two fronts. On one hand, many industrial
processes consume water, reducing its availability for other processes or the
environment. On the other hand, industrial processes can release contaminated
water that damages the local environment.
Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) can help recover resources present in wastewater.
Some organizations target ZLD for their waste as they can sell the produced
solids or reuse them as part of their industrial process. Adopting ZLD has many
benefits, including good economics, corporate responsibility, and environmental
stewardship. Operating an in-house ZLD plant can reduce disposal costs,
increase water reuse, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions through reduced
off-site trucking. This results in a reduced impact on local ecosystems and the
climate.
Benefits Of ZLD For An Industrial
Process
There are a number of benefits to targeting zero liquid discharge for an
industrial process or facility:

 The prime most benefit of ZLD system is environmental protection and

legal compliance for Industries
 Lowered waste volumes decrease the cost associated with waste
management.
 Recycle water on site, lowering water acquisition costs and risk. Recycling
on-site can also result in less treatment needs, versus treating to meet
stringent environmental discharge standards.
 Improved environmental performance, and regulatory risk profile for
future permitting.
 Some processes may recover valuable resources

Sludge Dryer Working Principle

The sludge dryer is a type of industrial dryer that is specifically designed to dry
sludge, a semi-solid waste material that is generated during the treatment of
wastewater. The working principle of the sludge dryer involves the following
steps:

 Material Loading: The sludge to be dried is fed into the sludge dryer, which
typically consists of a rotating drum or screw conveyor.
 Heating: The sludge is subjected to heat, which is supplied by a heating
source, such as a furnace, heat exchanger, or steam. This heats the sludge
and starts the evaporation process.
 Evaporation: As the sludge is heated, the moisture content begins to
evaporate, and the sludge becomes drier. The rate of evaporation depends
on the temperature and the amount of moisture in the sludge.
 Moisture Removal: As the moisture evaporates, it is removed from the
sludge and collected in a separate system, such as a condenser or a
dehumidifier.
 Drying: The sludge continues to dry until it reaches the desired level of
dryness. This may take several hours or several days, depending on the
volume of sludge, the temperature, and the desired level of dryness.
 Discharging: Once the sludge is dry, it is discharged from the sludge dryer
and can be further processed, disposed of, or used as a fuel source
The sludge dryer is an effective and efficient method for drying sludge, as it
eliminates the need for the sludge to be stored and transported while it is still
wet. This helps to reduce the volume and weight of the sludge, making it easier
to transport and dispose of. Additionally, the sludge dryer helps to reduce the
risk of odors and pathogens, as the drying process helps to kill bacteria and
other microorganisms.

Applications:
The use of dried or treated sludge is widespread and mainly includes agricultural
land application. When sludge is dried to produce biosolids, it can be used as a
fertilizer for crop harvesting. The organic nitrogen and phosphorus found in
biosolids are released slowly throughout the growing season, making it an
efficient source of plant nutrients for crops. This allows crops to absorb these
nutrients as they grow.
In addition to crop harvesting, the treated sludge can also be used as a top
dressing on golf course fairways, a soil conditioner for the construction of parks
and athletic fields, a soil substitute in final landfill cover, and in many other
applications.
