What is data restoration?
Data restore is the process of copying backup data from secondary storage and restoring it to
its original location or a new location. A restore is performed to return data that has been lost,
stolen or damaged to its original condition or to move data to a new location.

Several circumstances lead to the need for a data restore. One is human error, where data is
accidentally deleted or damaged. Other circumstances include malicious attacks where data is
exposed, stolen or infected; power outages; human-made or natural disasters; equipment
theft, malfunctions or failures; or firmware corruption.

Data restore makes a usable copy of the data available to replace lost or damaged data and
ensures the data backup is consistent with the state of the data at a specific point in time
before the damage occurred.

Importance of data restoration

The importance of data restoration can’t be understated. If you believe that it’s something your
business doesn’t have to think about, that mindset needs to change immediately. Whether
you’re a small business owner, or you’re running a massive company, you couldn’t survive
without it. Most people think of the word “backup” and that “the fluffy white cloud” and think
that’s all you need, but data backup is often less important than restoration.
Data restoration makes a usable copy of the data available to replace lost or damaged data,
while ensuring the data backup is consistent with the state of the data at a specific point in time
before the damage occurred. You want to be able to restore all your vital data in a matter of
minutes. No matter what has happened to your data, the idea that it’s simple enough for you to
retrieve in just a few clicks is comforting. Having a backup file browser makes it easy to restore
a file or folder, or view the data that was on your computers from a previous date to restore a
previous version of your files, or download all your files at once.

There are several reasons why you need to restore your data. Human error is the first one that
usually comes to mind. You might not think it will happen to you, but the next thing you know
your data is accidentally deleted or destroyed. You can add malicious attacks exposing your
data to cyber-criminals to the list. Also power outages, natural disasters, equipment theft,
malfunctions or failures, just to name a few of the things that could go wrong.
Quite often people confuse restore with recovery. The main difference between the restoration
and the recovery of a database all comes down to how you view it. Both refer to retrieving files
from a backup device, but recovering files typically involves salvaging multiple files. Restoring
means replacing a complete system or hard drive from a full system backup.

A prime example of this occurs when you accidentally erase a document. There’s human error
at it again. You might be able to recover the file, assuming you have a recent backup. If several
files in a folder are corrupted and cannot be opened, you might be able to recover the entire
folder from a backup. Individual files and folders can be recovered using a backup utility
program or by dragging files from the backup disk to the original hard disk.

Restoration is the action of returning something to it’s former condition. How often in life do
we wish we could turn back the clock to a simpler time. To a time when things were running
smoothly. That’s why data restoration is not just important, it’s life-affirming.
