Answer the following questions in detail.
(a) Discuss the life of the people in the Amazon rainforests.
Ans. People in the Amazon rainforests live in one part of the forest for some time
where they hunt and grow basic crops. They move on to another site to give the
soil a chance to recover. Sometimes people burn a patch of forested land to clear
the area to grow crops for themselves and their families. After the fertility of the
land is exhausted they move on further to clear another patch of land for
cultivation.
This primitive method of cultivation is called ‘slash and burn’. People in the
Amazon area grow crops such as tapioca, sweet potato, pineapple and bananas
using primitive methods. Large areas of forest land have been replaced by crop
plantations for commercial purposes. Plantation crops grown here include
rubber, coffee, cocoa and nuts.
(b) Write a note on life in the Ganga-Brahmaputra basin.
Ans. Most of the population in the Ganga–Brahmaputra Basin is engaged in agriculture
due to availability of enough water from the perennial rivers which are fed by the
melting snow of the Himalayas. These rivers also deposit fertile alluvial soil on the
river banks. This soil is ideal for crop cultivation. Irrigation facilities have made
agricultural activities more widespread in this basin. The tropical monsoon climate
is well suited for growing a variety of food crops in this basin such as rice, wheat,
maize, sorghum, pulses, oilseeds, etc. Cash crops grown here include sugar cane,
cotton, jute and tea. More than 70 per cent of the people living here are engaged
in agricultural activities directly or indirectly.
