Dell PowerProtect
4 Data Domain with Veritas NetBackup - Configuration Guide
Introduction

Introduction

Dell PowerProtect DD is a Purpose-Built Backup Appliance (PBBA), specifically a target

PowerProtect appliance. PowerProtect DD consists of both PowerProtect DD appliances and
Data Domain PowerProtect DD Virtual Edition (DDVE). PowerProtect DD provides fast backups and
series recovery, protects data on-premises and in the cloud, and delivers a lower cost-to-protect
appliances with leading data deduplication and bandwidth utilization. The Data Domain Operating
System (DDOS) is the intelligence that powers PowerProtect DD appliances. DDOS
provides the agility, security, and reliability that enables the PowerProtect DD appliance to
deliver an efficient, comprehensive, scalable, high-speed, and cloud-enabled protection
storage for backup, archive, and disaster recovery.

Veritas Veritas NetBackup software is a heterogeneous backup and recovery suite for large-scale
NetBackup enterprises. NetBackup provides backup, recovery, archive, retrieval, and disaster
recovery for a wide range of enterprise applications, hypervisors, and multi-cloud
environments. The product backs up data to disk, tape, and public clouds.

NetBackup terminology:
Primary Server: Manages backups, archives, and restores. The Primary Server contains
the NetBackup catalog which includes the internal databases that contain information
about NetBackup configuration and backups.

Media Server: Installed either on the primary server machine or on one or more separate
machines. Provisions the storage devices and manages the backup target such as a disk
storage unit or virtual tape drive.

Client: Installed on the client machine to be backed up. Sends backup data and receives
data on restore operations.

Integrating NetBackup integration with PowerProtect DD appliance

PowerProtect DD NetBackup can be configured to use PowerProtect DD appliances as a backup target
with NetBackup using Basic Disk (NFS, CIFS), DDBoost OST Storage Unit configuration, VTL, and NDMP
protocols.

OST plug-in

DDBoost for Dell DDBoost (DDBoost) enables backup servers to communicate with storage systems
Open Storage without the need for the PowerProtect DD appliance to emulate tape. DDBoost increases
backup performance by distributing the deduplication process between the client and the
backup server.

DDBoost for Open Storage software is a licensed option that allows a PowerProtect DD to
act as an Open Storage server for Veritas NetBackup. DDBoost for Open Storage
software includes a plug-in (referred to as the Data Domain OST plug-in) that runs on the
supported NetBackup media servers defined in the DDBoost Veritas NetBackup Support
Matrix.

The OST plug-in version must be compatible with the software version of your protection
system and with backup application configurations. DDBoost supports only combinations
detailed in the DDBoost Compatibility Guide available at dell.com/support.

Figure 3. DDBoost features overview

Reference Architecture – DDBoost for Open Storage with NetBackup

Figure 4. DDBoost for Open Storage with NetBackup

NetBackup environments consist of media servers and a primary server. The primary
server manages clients and media servers. The primary server can also function as a
media server. The OST plug-in must be installed on each media server. If a primary
server is configured as a media server, then the OST plug-in must be installed on the
primary server.

To integrate NetBackup with PowerProtect DD appliances, the DDBoost OST plug-in is

used. This plug-in includes the DDBoost libraries to integrate with the PowerProtect DD
appliances and enables NetBackup administrators to use all the features of DDBoost.

Dell PowerProtect Data Domain with Veritas NetBackup - Configuration Guide 7

Best practices

Dell PowerProtect
16 Data Domain with Veritas NetBackup - Configuration Guide
Configuring PowerProtect DD Storage Unit as BasicDisk Storage in NetBackup

It is a best practice to register the interface with a resolvable name using DNS or any
other name resolution mechanism. If the PowerProtect DD appliance is 192.168.1.1 and
is named dd22.abc.com, the command to register it on the media server will be:

nbdevconfig -creatests -stype DataDomain -storage_server

dd22.abc.com -media_server win-8uktouan6kj

The OST plug-in can recover from temporary network interruptions. However, the
operating system on the backup application system might terminate a job prematurely if
the backup application time-outs are set too low. A best practice is setting time-outs to at
least 30 minutes (1800 s).

Configuring PowerProtect DD Storage Unit as BasicDisk Storage

in NetBackup

Overview A BasicDisk type storage unit consists of a directory on a locally attached disk or a
network-attached disk that is exposed as a file system to a NetBackup media server.

PowerProtect DD can be configured as a BasicDisk storage unit when it is either NFS or

CIFS mounted on a NetBackup media server.

On a NetBackup media server that runs a version of the Windows operating system, the
absolute pathname to a directory to access the PowerProtect DD should be specified with
either the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) or the DFS path name.

Configuring Pre-requisites
NetBackup with 1. Enable CIFS protocol for the MTree on PowerProtect DD.
PowerProtect DD
using CIFS
protocol

Figure 25. Enabling CIFS protocol for the MTree on PowerProtect DD

2. For both AdvancedDisk and BasicDisk storage units, two NetBackup services on
the Windows media server to which the CIFS storage is attached must use the
same user credentials. The credentials must be valid Windows credentials that
allow read and write access to the storage.
NetBackup Client Service
The NetBackup Client Service is either bpcd.exe or bpinetd.exe.

NetBackup Remote Manager and Monitor Service

The NetBackup Remote Manager and Monitor Service binary file name is nbrmms.exe.

Configuring PowerProtect DD Virtual Tape Library (VTL) Storage

Unit with NetBackup

Overview DD Virtual Tape Library (DD VTL) is a disk-based backup system that emulates the use of
physical tapes. It enables backup applications to connect to and manage PowerProtect
DD storage using functionality almost identical to a physical tape library.

Virtual tape drives are accessible to backup applications in the same way as physical tape
drives. After these drives are created in a DD VTL, they appear to the backup application
as SCSI tape drives.

Configuring Replication in NetBackup using PowerProtect DD

Overview DD Replicator provides automated, policy-based, network-efficient, and encrypted

replication for DR (disaster recovery) and multi-site backup and archive consolidation. DD
Replicator asynchronously replicates only compressed, deduplicated data over a WAN
(wide area network). In order to meet a broad set of DR requirements, DD Replicator
provides flexible replication topologies, such as full system mirroring, bi-directional, many-
to-one, one-to-many, and cascaded.

PowerProtect DD replication has two types:

1. Native replication which is controlled by PowerProtect DD
2. Managed File Replication which is controlled by the backup application
Native replication can be divided into three types:
1. Directory replication provides replication at the level of individual directories.
2. Collection replication duplicates the entire data store on the source and transfers
that to the destination, and the replicated volume is read-only.
3. MTree replication replicates entire MTrees
Managed file replication, which is used by DDBoost, is a type of replication that is
managed and controlled by backup software. With managed file replication, backup
images are directly transferred from one DD system to another, one at a time, at the
request of the backup software. The backup software keeps track of all copies, allowing
easy monitoring of replication status and recovery from multiple copies.

Pre-requisites 1. A PowerProtect DD is already configured as a primary backup target.

Configuring DD Cloud Tier

Overview DD Cloud Tier is a native feature of DDOS 6.0 (or higher) for moving data from the active
tier to low-cost, high-capacity object storage in the public, private, or hybrid cloud for long-
term retention. No separate cloud gateway or virtual appliance is required. Data is sent
directly from the PowerProtect DD to the cloud with seamless management using the data
movement policy configured on the PowerProtect DD.

NetBackup allows users to move their backup datasets to PowerProtect DD active tier to
cloud tier using PowerProtect DD “data-movement” commands.
