RAY DIAGRAM AND MORE EQUATION

Name : _____________ Date : _______________

I. For number 1 to 7 you need to complete the ray diagrams to

determine the position of the image. Explain your image related to
its type, distance, size, orientation and its nature!

Notes

 When an image appear from a mirror, what you need to describe are :
- Image type : same side or opposite side.
- Image distance : reduced, further or equal
- Image size : diminished, enlarge or equal
- Image orientation : Right side up or inverted
- Image nature : real or virtual

II. Work out the numbers on the following questions! Put the complete
working!

Notes :
In order to find the position of an image, especially a curved mirror we
can use equations below:
 Focal length (+ for the convex mirror and – for the concave mirror)

+ Radius
focal length=
2
+R
f=
2

 Mirror equation (To find either the distance of object or image from
the mirror)
1 1 1
+ =
distance of the object distanc of theimage focal length

+ =
do di f

 Magnification equation (to find either the height of image or object)

di hi
= =m
do ho

- hi : height of the image

- ho : height of the object
- m : magnification

PRACTICE

1. Mr.H splurged when he bought his Yugo and ordered the side mirror
option. The mirror has a focal length of -99.4 cm.What is the image
height of a 4.69-meter tall truck when located 16 meters away from
the mirror?

2. ·A Christmas tree ornament with an 16 cm diameter serves as a convex

mirror surface Determine the image properties of a 1.6-meter tall
child standing a distance of 2.8 meters away

3. A candle is placed 8 cm from the vertex of a concave mirror that has a

focal length of 3 cm.
a. Locate the position of the image by means
(i) a ray diagram

(ii) the mirror equation.

b. Find the magnification of the image.

c. Describe the characteristics of the image.

4. Al Wayscurious is intrigued by the reflective abilities of his family's

soup ladle. The ladle acts as a concave mirror with a 2.4cm focal length.
Determine the image size of AL’s 26cm tall face when placed 17cm
from the ladle's surface?
