• When a proper noun does the work of Title in the
sentence we use “The” before it.
For ex- Kalidas is the Shakespeare of India.

Shubham is the Virat Kohli of our class.

• Vikarm is the Harischandra of our family.

• Vikram is a Harischandra.

Note: In second example it is clearly seen “Harischandra”

is not working as a title whereas in first one it does.
Geographical features:
1. Rivers: The Ganga, The Nile, The Amazon, Etc.
2. Oceans: The Pacific Ocean, The Indian Ocean etc.
3. Deserts: The Thar, The Sahara, The Gobi etc.
4. Sea/Gulf/Bay: The Arabian sea, The Bay of Bengal,
5. Holy books: The Bhagwad Geeta, The Bible etc.

Note : If Name of author is mentioned with the book, we

don’t use ‘The’.

Valmiki’s Ramayan, Vyas’ Mahabharat.

7. Newspapers: The Indian Express, The Hindu etc.
8. Unique entities: The Sun, The Moon, The Milky way, The
Earth etc.
9. Historical monuments: The Taj, The Red fort etc.
10.Historical events: The Revolt of 1857, The world war etc.
11.Directions: The North, The South, The East etc.

12.Ordinals: When ordinals work like Adjective in the

sentence,
For ex- The First, The Second, The Next etc.
Group Representation:
1. Organization: The CBI, The FBI, The RBI etc.
2. Federations: The USA, The UAE, The Netherlands, The USSR
etc.
3. Island Groups: The Andamans, The Bahamas, etc.
4. Mountain Ranges: The Himalayas, The Andes, The Alps,
5. The adjective which is changed into plural noun by adding
‘The’
The Poor, The Rich, The Old, The blind, The youth etc.
6. Nationalities: The Indians, The English, The French etc.
7. Religious Groups: The Hindus, The Muslims, The Sikhs etc.
