1. Definitions of Cloud & Pour Points

Pour point
The pour point of a liquid is the lowest temperature at which it becomes semi solid and loses its flow
characteristics. The Pour point describes a procedure for testing the fluidity of a petroleum product at a
specified temperature.

Cloud Point
The Cloud point is defined as the temperature of a liquid specimen when the smallest observable cluster
of wax crystals first appears upon cooling under prescribed conditions. The cloud point of a fluid is the
temperature at which dissolved solids are no longer completely soluble, precipitating as a second phase
giving the fluid a cloudy appearance.

This term is relevant to several applications with different consequences. In the petroleum industry,
cloud point refers to the temperature below which wax in diesel or bio wax in biodiesels form a cloudy
appearance. The presence of solidified waxes thickens the oil and clogs fuel filters and injectors in
engines. The wax also accumulates on cold surfaces (e.g. pipeline or heat exchanger fouling) and forms
an emulsion with water. Therefore, cloud point indicates the tendency of the oil to plug filters or small
orifices at cold operating temperatures.

In this test method, Cloud point and pour point are indicators of the lowest temperature of utility for
petroleum products. The sample is periodically examined while it is being cooled in the cloud and pour
point apparatus. The highest temperature at which haziness is observed (cloud point), or the lowest
temperature at which movement of the oil is observed (pour point), is reported as the test result.
The test can be performed in the laboratory on the prepared samples or in-situ on location.

2. Features of EIE Cloud & Pour Point Apparatus

3. Required apparatus and material to carry out this test

1) Test Jars
A cylindrical test jar of clear glass, flat bottom, 30 to 33.5 mm in inside diameter, and 115 to 125
mm in height. To indicate sample height, the jar should be marked with a line 54 ± 3 mm (2 1/8 ±
1/8 in) above the inside bottom.
2) Thermometer
Thermometers, having ranges as shown below and conforming to the requirements as prescribed
in ASTM Specification E 1 for ASTM Thermometers or in the Specifications for IP Standard.
Thermometers
Thermometer Number
Thermometer Temperature Range
ASTM IP
Cloud and -38 to + 50 °C 5C IC
Pour -36 to + 120 °F 5F IF
Low Cloud -80 to 20 °C 6C 2C
and Pour -112 to +70 °F 6F 2F

3) Cork
A cork to fit the test jar bored centrally to take the test thermometer.

4) Copper Jacket
A copper jacket is watertight, cylindrical jacket of glass or metal, flat bottom, about 115 mm in
depth. With inside diameter 9.5 to 12.5 mm greater than the outside diameter of the test jar.

5) Disk
A disk of cork or felt, 6 mm in thickness and of the same diameter as the inside of the jacket is
provided.

6) Gasket
A ring gasket of about 5 mm in thickness to fit snugly around the outside of the test jar and Loosely
inside the jacket is incorporated. This gasket may be made of cork, felt, or other suitable material
which is elastic enough to cling to the test jar and hard enough to hold its shape. The purpose of
the ring gasket is to prevent the test jar from touching the jacket.

7) Cooling Bath

5. Delivery and Uncrating the instrument

a) Inspect equipment and shipping crate immediately upon receipt. If any damage is apparent,
immediately discuss it with the delivery person and contact the transportation company
immediately. Make notes of any damages on the bill of landing.
b) Retain all shipping material for later inspection.
c) Check packing slip carefully and ensure all materials have been received as indicated in the packing
slip.
d) Instrument is supplied in enclosed wooden case. Unpack the wooden case, locate and count the
number of accessories and main working unit. Remove packing strip from surroundings of the
instrument and all its accessories. Please inspect and note whether any part of the instrument is
damaged or any accessory is missing according to packing slip? If it is so, then immediately make
note of it and report to the manufacturer.
e) Due to the vibration incurred during shipping and handling, it is possible that mechanical connection
could become loose. Inspect all connection to ensure that they are secure.
f) After visual inspection, if everything is found to be okay, transit the instrument to suitable safe place
where it is intended to install. Caution : Heavy weight, protect yourself first. Handle with care.
g) Recycle the packing material and wooden box. Do not throw it away for environment protection.

6. Installation Instructions

1) Place the equipment on a plain, even and sturdy surface leaving 5-6” space away from the wall.
2) Allow enough space around the chamber to permit serviceability and the removal of the service
access panels, which are located on each side and the rear of the unit.
3) Do not install unit in a corrosive environment. A corrosive environment may lead to poor
performance and deterioration of exterior appearance.
4) Check the electrical specifications label located on the equipment. Make sure the power
specifications must confirm to your local standard.
5) Read this instruction manual carefully and abide to its requisites.
6) The ambient temperature should not be more than 30 °C.
7) Provide 1Ø / 230V / 50Hz stabilized power source with proper earthing.
8) Plug the power cord into a properly grounded outlet.

8
7. Test procedure

1) Connect the equipment’s power cord in the wall socket.

2) Pour solvent in to the tanks not less than one inch below from the upper surface of the tank and
then close the lid. (Note: If the liquid level falls below one inch from the upper surface of the tank,
then it may lead to heater failure).
3) Turn ON the main switch. The compressor will be turned-on after two minutes of time delay
4) After switching on the unit, the controller display will read the inside tank temperature.
5) To set the temperature press “SET” Key, the display will indicate “SET” and the previous SET value
simultaneously. Using (Up) and (Down) keys on the control panel, set the required
temperature and then press Enter (ENT) key to store the value. (Note: The equipment will take few
minutes to attain the “SET” temperature and the tolerance value for that temperature is ±2 °C)
6) After the equipment reaches its SET value as set by the operator, the compressor will start to
conduct ON/OFF cycle. On completion of three ON/OFF cycles, the equipment will be ready to use.
7) Wait for the completion of three ON/OFF cycles to load the samples into the test jars. The test
sample shall be poured into a test jar to a level approximately half full.
8) A cork carrying the test thermometer is used to close the jar. The thermometer bulb is positioned
to rest at the bottom of the jar.
9) Then, place the entire test subject in a constant temperature cooling bath on top of a gasket to
prevent excessive cooling.
10) Now, inspect the sample for cloud at every 1°C, by taking it out from the test jars and then quickly
replace after the observation.
11) After using the equipment the solvent can be drained out.
