LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET (LAS)

BALANCING CHEMICAL EQUATIONS

BACKGROUND INFORMATION FOR LEARNERS:

The chemical equation needs to be balanced so that it follows the law of conservation of mass.
A balanced chemical equation occurs when the number of the different atoms of elements in the reactants
side is equal to that of the products side. Balancing chemical equations is a process of trial and error.
To balance the chemical equation, we need to make use of coefficients. A coefficient is a number
placed in front of a chemical symbol or formula. It is multiplied by all the atoms in the equation and it shows
how many atoms or molecules of the substance are involved in the reaction. For example, two molecules of
hydrogen gas would be written as 2 H 2, and two molecules of water would be written 2 H 2O. A coefficient of
1 usually isn't written. A subscript (number on the lower right side) on the other hand, is only multiplied by
the number of atoms it immediately follows.

LEARNING COMPETENCY:
Apply the Principles of Conservation of Mass to Chemical Equations/Reactions

DIRECTION/INSTRUCTION:
Complete the table below by supplying a correct answer on each blank and balance the equation if necessary.

REACTANT PRODUCT BALANCED EQUATION

Mg + O2 MgO

Fe + CuSO4 Fe + CuSO4 FeSO4 + Cu

Ca + H3PO4 Ca3(PO4)2 + H2

Zn + H2SO4 ZnSO4 + H2

NaCl + AgNO3 NaNO3 + AgCl

Given the chemical equation, answer the following questions below.
