History and Traditions of Reiki
History and Traditions of Reiki
The Reiki method of healing was founded on the revelation and understanding of the body’s
energy system. Reiki Practitioners strive to improve health and quality of life by offering Reiki
energy and restoring balance. Reiki is used in self-care, for care of one’s family, and is offered in
private practive and in hospitals and medical settings as an adjunct and supportive therapy to
wellness and traditional medical care. The form of Reiki that many people practice today, Usui
Reiki, has been in use for over one hundred years. The history of Usui Reiki begins with its
founder, Dr. Mikao Usui. Sometimes called the Usui Sensei, Dr. Mikao Usui was born to a wealthy
Buddhist family in 1865. Dr. Usui’s family was able to give their son a well-rounded education for
the time. As a child, Dr. Usui studied in a Buddhist monastery where he was taught martial arts,
swordsmanship, and the Japanese form of Chi Kung, known as Kiko.
Throughout his education, Dr. Usui had an interest in medicine, psychology and theology. It was
this interest that prompted him to seek a way to heal himself and others using the laying on of
hands. It was his desire to find a method of healing that was unattached to any specific religion
and religious belief, so that his system would be accessible to everyone.
Dr. Usui traveled a great deal during his lifetime. He studied healing systems of all types and held
different professions including reporter, secretary, missionary, public servant and guard. Finally,
he became a Buddhist priest/monk and lived in a monastery. Sometime during his years of
training in the monastery, Dr. Usui attended his own training rediscovery course in a cave on
Mount Kurama. For 21 days, Dr. Usui fasted, meditated and prayed. On the morning of the
twenty-first day, Dr. Usui experienced an event that would change his life forever. He saw ancient
Sanskrit symbols that helped him develop the system of healing he had been struggling to
invent. Usui Reiki was born.
After his spiritual awakening on Mount Kurama, Dr. Usui established a clinic for healing and
teaching in Kyoto. Further Development of Reiki
Reiki, Healing Touch (HT), Therapeutic Touch (TT) are all ‘energy therapies’ that use gentle hand
techniques that are thought to help repattern the patient's energy field and accelerate healing of
the body, mind and spirit. They are all based on the belief that human beings are fields of energy
that are in constant interaction with other fields of energy from others and the environment.
Western allopathic approaches focus on diseases and their underlying mechanisms; cure is the
be-all and end-all. Practitioners use TT and HT to improve health and healing by addressing a
patient's ‘Disturbed Energy Field: disruption in the flow of energy surrounding a person's being
that results in a disharmony of the body, mind, and/or spirit’ . Rebalancing (or boosting) these
energies is done through a clear intention to support and harmonize the subject with his or her
innate energy balance. These practices therefore typically begin with the practitioner performing
some form of ritual that clears and focuses the intention to bring harmony and balance to the
person who is in need .
Reiki is a Japanese word, Rei meaning universal or omnipresent, and Ki meaning life force
or energy (Singg).
In the Japanese belief system, "Ki" is identified as the universal energy. The body is a system of
pathways in which Ki is continuously flowing. A chakra is located where two or more of these
pathways intersect. Each chakra is a vortex consisting of a multidimensional ball of energy. They
are a connection of vibrant energy. When Ki is flowing through each chakra smoothly, one will
function more relaxed and clearer with a higher purpose. Although there are ways one can
balance their chakras on their own, for example, medication and dance, Reiki is an effective
treatment to assist in unblocking and balancing each chakra so that energy can flow freely and
openly throughout the body.

The aura has different layers each with a distinctive role to play throughout the life
depending on the activity.
Interpretation of aura colours
Cleansing of aura before doing Reiki is essential for desired results. Whole body cleansing takes
five to ten minutes time. When one’s body aura is polluted, it becomes heavy and it starts
causing problems just like we get noise in radio signals if the reception is not fine-tuned.Methods
