2. Motivation

The teacher will present pictures of objects,

and the students need to guess the pair or
identify what object goes along with each one.

Pen - Paper

Socks - Shoes

Lock - Key

Spoon - Fork (The student’s will answer)

Needle - Thread

All the objects that are presented go along

with another. Just like these objects, the
subject and verb in a sentence must always
agree with one another to ensure clear and
effective communication. Today, we will be
discussing subject-verb agreement.

Lesson Proper

3.Presentation

Subject sentence is the person, place, thing, or

idea that is performing the action or being
described. While the verb of a sentence is the
word that expresses the action or state of
being.

Subjects and verbs must always agree with

one another.

Here are the general rules of subject-verb

agreement that you need to remember: The students are actively participating in the
discussion.
Rule 1: Singular subjects take singular verbs

When the subject of a sentence is singular, use

a verb that is also singular.

● Examples:
○ Correct: The cat runs fast.
○ Incorrect: The cat run fast.

Rule 2: Plural subjects take plural verbs

When the subject of a sentence is plural, use a

verb that is also plural.

Examples:

○ Correct: The dogs bark

loudly.
○ Incorrect: The dogs barks
loudly.

Rule 3: When a subject is joined by "and," it is

plural

When two subjects are joined by "and," they

typically require a plural verb.

● Examples:
○ Correct: John and Mary are
going to the store.
○ Incorrect: John and Mary is
going to the store.

Rule 4: When subjects are joined by "or" or

"nor," the verb agrees with the nearest subject

When subjects are connected by "or" or "nor,"

the verb should agree with the part of the
subject closest to the verb.

● Examples:
○ Correct: Neither the teacher
nor the students have the
answer.
○ Incorrect: Neither the teacher
nor the students has the
answer.
○ Correct: Either the students or
the teacher is responsible.
○ Incorrect: Either the students
or the teacher are responsible.

Rule 5: Collective nouns usually take singular

verbs

Collective nouns (e.g., team, class, group)

usually take a singular verb because they refer
to a single unit.

● Examples:
○ Correct: The team wins the
championship.
○ Incorrect: The team win the
championship.

Rule 6: Indefinite pronouns can be singular or

plural

Indefinite pronouns like everyone, someone,

and nobody are singular, while others like
both, few, many, and several are plural.

● Examples:
○ Correct: Everyone is invited
to the party.
○ Incorrect: Everyone are
invited to the party.
○ Correct: Both of the girls
have completed their
assignments.
○ Incorrect: Both of the girls
has completed their
assignments.
