Do you know how to install wiring devices? What wiring
devices have you installed? What are the procedures in
Unlocking of installing wiring devices?
Difficulties

• GFCI-Ground
Fault Current If I am going to install wiring devices, what procedures
Interrupter do I need to follow?
• NEC-National I think you need to
Electrical Code know and follow
• PEC-Philippine safety procedures
Electrical Code first.

In installing wiring devices, you need to identify and follow procedures. You
have to comply with the idea of “Safety First”.

NEC PROVISION IN INSTALLING WIRING DEVICES

A ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) is required for all receptacles in wet
locations defined in the Code. The NEC also has rules about how many circuits and
receptacles should be placed in a given residential dwelling, and how far apart they can be
in a given type of room, based upon the typical cord length of small appliances.

The NEC also permits grounding-type receptacles in non-grounded wiring protected

by a GFCI; this only applies when old non-grounded receptacles are replaced with
grounded receptacles, and the new receptacles must be marked with 'No equipment
ground' and 'GFCI Protected'.

TYPES OF WIRING DEVICES

A device is a unit of an electrical system that is intended to carry, not to utilize

electric energy. This covers a wide assortment of system components that include, but not
limited to the following:

1. Switches
2. Relays
3. Contactors
4. Receptacles
5. Conductors

How to select wiring devices?

1. Select one recognized industry manufacturer.
2. Look for a project with a multi-year warranty.
3. Make sure that there is an easy and clear way to contact the manufacturers support.
4. Check for a connected equipment damage warranty.
5. Always ask for manufacturer’s manual.
6. Select wiring devices which are well-made and durable.
7. Select materials that are easy to use and install.
8. Select wiring devices according to the job requirements.

TYPES OF ELECTRICAL BOX

1. Wall boxes
• They all used for housing swithes and receptacles.
• They are made of metal or plastic and have the capability to be mounted to a wall
or stud.
• The holes in the side of the box where the conduit enters the box are called
knockouts. In metal boxes, the conduit can also be secured to the holes.
• One type is a four-inch square box that is only 1 ½” or 2” deep used in places that
are too shallow to mount a standard box.

a. Handy boxes are surface mounted with rounded corners for

safety.

b. Drywall boxes have expandable arms and can be mounted on

a drywall.

c. Plastic boxes are best for new installation and often have a nail
built-in for quick attachment to the stud.

4
d. Gem boxes are commonly made boxes, usually in 2” wide, 3”
high and 2 ½” deep and made of metal. Deeper boxes are
available.

2. Ceiling boxes

• They are also known as junction boxes or splice boxes.

• They are used to anchor ceiling fixtures and serves as a junction box where wires
can meet and run to other areas of the room.
• They are either 4” octagonal or round shaped, and either 1 ½” or 2 1/8” deep.
• They may also include adjustable mounting hangers that attach to rafters in the
ceiling and allow the box to be placed anywhere in between.
• Hangers also provide the short nipple or threaded rod that secures lighting fixtures.

3. Weather-proof boxes
• They are also known as an outdoor box.
• They are used for exterior switches or receptacles.
• They are thicker than interior boxes and has a rubber gasket between the cover
and the box to keep out water.
• Their covers are either screw-on or snap-on.

4. Wall plates
• They are also nkown as faceplates or covers.
• They are flat metal, plastic or wooden piece that covers the openings in the wall
made by receptacles and switches.
• Their opening in the cover match the type and number, or receptacles or switches
being covered. Blank covers are also available.

Work Plan

Performance Objective: Given a diagram, tools and materials, you should be able to
install electrical lighting system, auxiliary outlet and lighting fixtures.

Safety rules and practices during laboratory work:

1. Observe proper handling of tools and equipment.
2. Always check the materials to make sure that they are not damage before installing.

Procedure:
1. Prepare all necessary tools and equipment needed.
2. Wear appropriate PPE.
3. Layout all the measurement of installation based on the given work plan.
4. Install/mount all boxes with straight connectors.
5. Cut and bend conduits based on the job requirements.
6. Cut wire to the desired length.
7. Strip wires in the boxes then connect them to the terminals of swithes, receptacles, and
breakers.
8. Splice, joint wires in junction boxes based on the circuit design operation.
9. Lamp A should be controlled by switch A.
10. Lamp BC should be controlled by switch B.
11. 40AT Main circuit breaker shall be switch on for individual functions of branch
circuits.
12. 15AT Circuit breaker must be switch to operate the system of lighting circuit.
13. 30AT Circuit breaker must be switch to operate the system of power circuit.
14. Perform good housekeeping.
