TYPES OF COMMUNICATION

Communication Mode
Verbal
-Spoken words to convey messages and information to others
Ex: Face-to-face conversations, phone calls, video conference

Non-Verbal
-Transmission of information or messages through emotions or
without using spoken or written words
Ex: Sign language, body language, facial expressions

Visual
-Uses visuals to convey information/messages
Ex: Signs, symbols, photos, drawings
Context
Intrapersonal Communication
-means talking to oneself
-labelled as inner talk, inner monologue, or inner dialogue

Interpersonal Communication

-between, among, together


-communication is interpersonal if it is meant to establish or
deepen a relationship with others
-if the objective is to achieve something at the end of the
conversation, it becomes transactional
Extended Communication
-involves the use of electronic media
-can include tele, audio or phone conferencing, video-
conferencing

Organizational Communication
-focuses on the role that communication plays in organizational
contexts
2 Types of Organizational Structure
1. Formal - allows communication to take place in designated
channels of message flow
2. Informal - comes from unofficial channels of message flow;
messages coming from different levels of the organizations
is transmitted (grapevine)
4 Approaches (Formal)
1. Downward Communication - type of communication that
flows from upper to lower positions
2. Upward Communication - subordinates send
communication to their superiors bearing their
views/feedback related to the job
3. Horizontal Communication - takes place among people
belonging to the same level but from different
departments
4. Crosswise Communication - employees from different
departments working at various levels communicate with
each other
Intercultural Communication

-communication between or among people


having different linguistic, religious, ethnic,
social, and professional backgrounds
-gender differences also affects
communications where individuals have
different orientations in communicating and
interpreting messages differently
Purpose & Style
-focuses on the communication setting and mode of
delivery

1. Formal Communication - employs formal language


delivered orally or in written form
Ex: Lectures, public talks/speeches, reports
2. Informal Communication - involves personal and
ordinary conversations with friends, family members, or
acquaintances
Ex: Phone calls, personal notes, letters
