COURSE : DET50063 MOTOR CONTROL AND DRIVE

LAB SHEET NO : 1
TITLE: : SPEED CONTROL OF DC MOTOR

OBJECTIVE:

At the end of this experiment, students should be able to:

1. Translate from schematic circuit to wiring circuit.
2. Measure the speed of D.C shunt motor by varying the armature voltage.
3. Control speed of motor running by armature resistance and field resistance

Introduction

Like generators, there are three types of d.c. motors characterized by the connections of fieldwinding in
relation to the armature :

1) Shunt-wound motor in which the field winding is connected in parallel with the armature.
2) Series-wound motor in which the field winding is connected in series with the armature.
3) Compound-wound motor which has two field windings; one connected in parallel with the
armature and the other in series with it. There are two types of compound motor
connections (like generators). When the shunt field winding is directly connected across the
armature terminals it is called short-shunt connection. When the shunt winding is so
connected that it shunts the series combination of armature and series field it is
called long-shunt connection.

Net voltage across armature circuit, Va = V - Eb

If.Ra is the armature circuit resistance, then, Ia = (V – Ea) / Ra
V = Eb + Ia.Ra
Since V and Ra are usually fixed, the value of Eb will determine the current drawn by the motor. If
the speed of the motor is high, then back e.m.f. Eb = P ZN/60 A is large and hence the motor will
draw less armature current and vice versa.
The Main Advantage of DC Motors is Speed Control, which does not affect the quality of power
supply. It can be controlled by adjusting:
• the armature voltage – increasing the armature voltage will increase the speed the field current –
reducing the field current will increase the speed.

Equipment/component

1) Compound D.C Machine as (series, shunt and compound) motor.

2) System Test Unit and pendulum machine to measure speed (rpm)
3) Voltmeter 0 – 300 VDC and Ammeter 0 - 30 A
4) Power Supply 0 – 220 VDC.
5) Armature resistor (47Ω) and Field resistor (560Ω)
6) Cable
PROCEDURE :

A. DC Compound motor for speed control – voltage terminal control

1. Develop a full circuit connection, referring to the circuit diagram 1 Connect and operate
the DC machine as a DC shunt motor.
2. Set supply voltage to 20Vdc to record the armature current, motor speed and back emf
into table 1
3. Repeat step 2 with different armature @ terminal voltage as stated in the table 1.
