A better introduction would read: The Dutch East India Company, started in 1602, was formed
with the main goal of giving the small state control over trade in the Indian Ocean as well as
strengthening their efforts in the fight for independence against Spain. The company quickly
gained prominence, becoming one of the most successful international companies of the 17 th
Century. The influence of the Dutch East India Company spread beyond the immediate interests
of The Netherlands, extending to countries and territories within Asia and Africa. In Asia, the
company had a major influence on the spice trade, taking it over and even leading to the
colonization of some countries and territories. Under the guise of modernizing the “primitive”
Indonesia, the Dutch East India Company changed the economic and social landscape of the
Asian country.

became interested in Indonesia due to the productive lucrative spice trade. Indonesia also had
and its rich soils that supported the growth of cloves and nutmeg, which and nutmeg was one
of the most valuable items in the early 17 th century after gold and silver. How did they take over
the spice trade? Up to what year did they maintain control? What happened to Indonesia’s
economy when the Dutch took over? Answer these questions to improve the paragraph.

When the Dutch East India Company came to Indonesia it made an impact on the archipelago
which added to its economy, social life and politics. Besides controlling the spice trade, the
Dutch also had an impact on agriculture in Indonesia, introducing the cultivation of cash crops
like coffee, the indigo plant, tea, sugarcane, and rubber. The Dutch employed the natives local
people who were used as labour to work in the sugarcane plantations, offering were provided
for paid employment opportunities. State how exactly this affected the standard of living of the
natives. Due to the growth in agricultural production, there were significant investments in
infrastructure like factories, storehouses, roads, bridges, water control systems, and port
facilities. The cultivation of sugarcane led to the construction of roads and railways which were
used to transport the sugar to the outside market. Your point lists more than one cash crops yet
only talks about infrastructure in relation to sugar cane. Weren’t the other cash crops also
traded?
