What is It
The idea about knowing the difference between hazards and risks is essential because
it prevents illnesses and accidents in the workplace.
.
What is the difference between 'hazard' and 'risk'? Hazards is something that can cause
harm, like broken electric wire, chemicals misuse, noise and stress.
Risk is the chance or probability that a person may be harmed or experienced an adverse
health effects from an exposure to a particular hazard. It may also apply to situations in
property or equipment loss.
A risk is the chance maybe high or low, that any hazard can cause harm to anyone.
RISK
For example, working alone away from your office can be hazardous due to the risks of
car accidents which happened in different places. Working on electrical repair without proper
training is a hazard. For an instance, if someone accidentally turned on the power while other
is working, the worker may experience electric shock.

Five Basic Workplace Hazards
There are five major types of hazards which can put both your health and your safety at
risk.
1. Chemical hazards
2. Physical hazards
3. Biological hazards
4. Ergonomic hazards or job-related hazards
5. Psychological hazards or stress

BIOLOGICAL HAZARDS
ERGONOMIC HAZARDS
PSYCHOLOGICAL HAZARDS
7
What are the examples of hazards?
One of the most dangerous among the hazards is chemical hazard. Chemical may
produce reactions that may endanger one’s health and life. This is the reason why the
American Conference of Governmental Hygienist (ACGIH) established a threshold limit value
(TLV).
TLV is the term used by the American Conference of Governmental Hygienists
(ACGIH*) to express the airborne concentration of a material to which nearly all persons can
be exposed day after day, without adverse health effects
