Introduction - Croda Crop Care, Your Partner In Natural Plant Science
The agrochemical industry finds itself in a period of unprecedented global change. The increasing demand for food from a growing population, shifting
dietary preferences, and the use of agricultural land for fuel sources, are just some of the prevailing trends. Additional regulatory restrictions imposed
by REACH and the EPA, coupled with consumer concerns for safer and more eco-friendly crop products, mean formulation scientists are facing huge
challenges to satisfy these diverse needs.
In 2000, the global population was 6 billion and available arable land was 2000 sqm per person. However, it is estimated that by 2020, the global
population will reach 7.5 billion and the amount of land per person will reduce to 1800sqm as seen in Figure 1 below.

As a world leader in formulation adjuvants and inerts, Croda Crop Care is playing a crucial role in helping crop protection scientists deliver:
n More efficient formulations

n More complex formulations

n Safer formulations

More Efficient Formulations

The primary aim of the formulator is to optimise the biological activity
of the pesticide and minimise the dose required. Adjuvant science has
been one of the safest and most effective routes to achieving this.
Croda offers its customers specialist knowledge on many aspects of
adjuvant technology, and operates an ongoing R&D programme for
enhancing product performance in many formulation types.

More Complex Formulations

Trends indicate that more ‘combo’ formulations, which are formulations
containing two, three or even four active ingredients (AI), will enter
the market offering a broader protective spectrum. Croda’s specialist
polymeric surfactants are often the best solution to successfully
producing such complex, multiple AI formulations. The resulting novel
systems can give products a competitive advantage and extend the
life-cycle of actives.

Safer Formulations
Many governments and consumer groups are demanding improved
pesticides that are safer for the user, end consumer, and the
environment. VOC restrictions have resulted in a move to Micro
Emulsions, Concentrated Emulsions, Suspension Concentrates and Oil
Flowables. Croda offers excellent technologies for all these alternative
formulation types that are not only safer but also more cost-effective,
due to partial or complete replacement of the solvent component.

Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC)
An Emulsifiable Concentrate (EC) is defined as a formulation consisting of a blend of oil, active ingredient and surfactants.

When the formulation is

diluted into water, a milky
emulsion forms.
AI, Surfactants, Water Emulsion
Oil and Additives
Emulsifiable concentrates are still one of the most important formulation types for crop protection products worldwide. Emulsifiable concentrates
bloom spontaneously with dispersed phase droplets in the size range of 0.1 to 1.0μm. The spontaneous emulsion can be achieved by selecting one
or more surfactants based upon their ability to emulsify the solvent system, including the active, into water. A physically stable emulsion is formed by
balancing the water soluble and oil soluble surfactant components at the water/solvent interface. When sprayed, the dilute emulsion gives a uniform
and accurate application of active ingredient on the crop, which is essential for effective pest control.
Benefits Limitations
n Easy to handle, transport and store n Low flashpoint

n Little agitation n Hazardous solvent vapours

n Relatively high biological efficacy n Active ingredient solubility in solvent

n Low in cost n Use of water miscible solvents causing active crystallisation

problems upon dilution

n Spontaneous emulsification upon dilution

Croda offers an extensive range of emulsifiers which gives a synergistic emulsifier blend at the water/solvent interface required for forming an
emulsifiable concentrate. AtloxTM 671 and Atlox 672 is an excellent pair of emulsifiers which can be used for a wide range of EC formulations.
Other recommended emulsifiers include Atlox 4838B (water insoluble anionic surfactant), EtocasTM 10 (low water solubility, low HLB non-ionic
surfactant) and Etocas 35 (highly water soluble high HLB non-ionic surfactant).

Concentrated Aqueous Emulsion (EW)
A Concentrated Aqueous Emulsion (EW) is defined as a dispersion of a water insoluble organic liquid into a continuous water phase.

Liquid Technical Water Concentrated Aqueous

(or Solid Technical Emulsion Formulation
Dissolved in Solvent)

The formulation is not a thermodynamically driven process but rather mechanically driven, requiring high-shear processing to reduce particle size
and attain a stable formulation. Concentrated aqueous emulsions are one formulation type that can be considered a safe and environmentally friendly
alternative to emulsifiable concentrates (EC), and offer the benefit of replacing much of the organic solvents with water. They are physically stabilised
by choice and concentration of surfactants at the solvent/water interface. The emulsion has already been established in the end product and is only
diluted in the spray mixture.
Benefits Limitations
n Low solvent n Active ingredient solubility in solvent

n Low phytotoxicity n Stability upon dilution

n No flashpoint concern n Unsuitable for hydrolytically unstable actives

n Easy to handle n Achieving long term stability

n Lower environmental impact

n Low in cost

For EW formulations, Croda’s polymeric surfactants are recommended to ensure maximum emulsion stability. Two different polymeric surfactant
types are required to formulate an EW:
1. Low HLB component. Non-ionic block co-polymers such as Atlox 1400 or non-ionic random copolymer such as Atlox 4914 are
recommended. For ease of handling, liquid products such as Atlox 4914 are the preferred option.
2. High HLB component. EO/PO block copolymers are recommended. Often large EO / PO block copolymer are paste or solid products such as
AtlasTM G-5000 or Atlox 1500. Recently a liquid variant, Atlas G5002L, has been introduced.

Suspension Concentrate (SC)
A Suspension Concentrate (SC) is defined as an insoluble solid active ingredient dispersed in an aqueous medium.

Insoluble solid

Aqueous medium

Formulation

Suspension concentrates are a natural progression in technology from dust and wettable powder formulations. A surfactant system is required
to stabilise the organic solid in water. Wetting agents and dispersants play an important role as basic components in suspension concentrate
formulations, and are responsible for the wetting of the particles and stabilising them in the dispersion medium either by electrostatic or
steric repulsion.
Benefits
n Absence of dust Limitations
n Easy to use n Long term stability

n Safe n Crystal growth

n Absence of flammable liquids n Stability upon dilution

n Small particle size of the active ingredient

Croda offers a range of ionic and non-ionic surfactants that uniformly disperse the organic technical into water.
Croda highly recommends the use of polymeric dispersants such as Atlas G-5000/5002L, Atlox 4894, Atlox 4913 and the Atlox Metasperse
range to significantly improve long term stability and suspension on dilution. The extended repulsive barriers of the polymer chains are better able
to prevent agglomeration. Polymeric surfactants often demonstrate a reduction in crystal growth as well.
Croda’s new electrolyte-tolerant polymeric dispersant, Atlox 4915, allows you easily to suspend a solid in a high electrolyte solution.

Wettable Powder (WP)
A Wettable Powder (WP) is defined as a system of active ingredient, surfactants and filler that forms a suspension when mixed with water. Some active
ingredients which cannot be formulated into emulsifiable concentrates can be formulated into WPs.

AI, surfactants and filler

Liquid media

Wettable Powder Water Formulation

The formulation contains one or more active ingredients which can be either a liquid or solid. Wetting agents are used to facilitate the suspension of
the particles in water and a dispersing agent is added to prevent any flocculation of the suspension before it is applied. The wetting agent functions at
the solid/liquid interface and aids in the incorporation of the wettable powder into the water phase at the time of dilution. Once the wettable powder
has been added to the water phase (with the aid of the wetting agent), the dispersant now functions to isolate the individual particles.
This formulation type is especially useful for the treatment of highly absorbent surfaces. When a wettable powder solution is sprayed onto a surface,
a high percentage of the active ingredients are left on the surface. They are usually more concentrated than dusts, containing higher percentages of
active ingredient. Therefore agitation is required in the spray tank to keep the actives in suspension.
Benefits
Limitations
n Uniform distribution of active ingredients
n Dust
n Large potential for high active ingredient concentrations
n Suspensibility upon dilution
n Exceptional residual control
n Low bulk density
n Cost effective

Croda has many options to offer for wettable powder formulations. Atlox Metasperse 550S is an excellent polymeric dispersant and
demonstrates physical stability at low to moderate use levels. DispersolTM BB4 and Dispersol PSR 19 are dispersing agents that work at 4-6%
in the formulations. They are used in tandem with wetting agents, Dispersol PS, LissapolTM BN 200 L and Lissapol D powder, for optimal
performance of the formulation. Dispersol CBZ acts as both the wetting and dispersing agent and can be used alone in some formulations.
