Pattern notes – To achieve a seamless look the hat is worked in a continuous spiral without
joining at the end of each round. Stitch counts are given in parenthesis at the end of each
round, and a marker is used to designate the last stitch. The sizes provided are in even
increases of 8 stitches, but more custom sizing can be achieved by adjusting the final increase
round. The instructions below will produce a beanie-style hat, but additional body or brim
rounds can be worked if a slouchy look is desired. Changing colors on the first brim row leads to
the patterned appearance. If you prefer a more clear transition, simply change to the contrast
color for the final round of the body.

Pattern begins here:

Round 1 – Start with magic circle. Ch 2 (does not count as a stitch), then work 8 hdc in the
circle. Pull tail to tighten the circle. Do not join. Place marker to indicate the last stitch of the
round. (8)
Round 2 – 2hdc in each stitch around. (16)
Round 3 – (hdc in next stitch, 2hdc in next stitch), repeat around. (24)
Round 4 – (hdc in next 2 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch), repeat around. (32)
Round 5 – (hdc in next 3 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch), repeat around. (40) As a verification of
correct gauge, your circle should measure approximately 4 inches across at this point. This is
the last increase round for the newborn size. Start working hdc in each stitch around for SIX
ADDITIONAL ROUNDS, then skip to brim section below.

Round 6 – (hdc in next 4 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch), repeat around. (48) This is the last
increase round for 3-6 month size. Start working hdc in each stitch around for SEVEN
ADDITIONAL ROUNDS, then skip to brim section below.

Round 7 – (hdc in next 5 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch), repeat around. (56) This is the last
increase round for toddler size. Start working hdc in each stitch around for NINE ADDITIONAL
ROUNDS, then skip to brim section below.

Round 8 – (hdc in next 6 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch), repeat around. (64) This is the last
increase round for child/teen size. Start working hdc in each stitch around for TEN ADDITIONAL
ROUNDS, then skip to brim section below.

Round 9 – (hdc in next 7 stitches, 2hdc in next stitch), repeat around. (72) This is the last
increase round for adult size. Start working hdc in each stitch around for TWELVE ADDITIONAL
ROUNDS, then continue to brim section.

Brim – worked as 2 continuous rounds (or more if desired). Change to contrast color in the last
stitch of the last body round (see note above). Work (fpdc, bpdc) around the hat. After the final
stitch, sl st to first stitch of the previous round to finish off. Weave in ends. Add flower, heart,
or other embellishment if desired.
