Subject: Rear brake bleeding procedure

Product: All models

Further to a continuous quality monitoring of our product, we have decided to introduce an IMPORTANT
UPDATE of the procedure for rear braking bleeding operation.

We ask you to apply the procedure described below every time it is necessary to perform the bleeding
of the rear braking system.

The repayment under warranty for this procedure is foreseen only during the period of the contractual
warranty of the motorcycle.

 Warranty Type: GC
 OPERATION CODE: P144
 PROBLEM CODE: 012
 It is also mandatory to indicate in the warranty claim’s notes the words "REAR BRAKE BLEEDING COD 1606"

We take this chance to remember that the scheduled maintenance plan, which the Customer must regularly
perform, prescribes the replacement of the braking system fluid every 2 years.
In order to correctly perform this intervention, it is in any case mandatory to perform the braking system
bleeding, by merely applying the procedure described below, which will remain on charge to the Customer.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation, we are at your disposal for any technical / commercial support.

Yours sincerely,

REAR BRAKING SYSTEM BLEEDING INSTRUC-

TIONS 1

- Phase 1: ABS unit bleeding

Open the cover of the rear brake fluid reservoir by

removing the two screws (1).
Place a clean cloth around the brake fluid reservoir.

Brake fluid is extremely corrosive. Avoid

contract with the eyes, skin and nose. Wash
abundantly with water if contact is acciden-
tally made and consult a doctor.

During the successive operations, avoid

spilling the brake fluid onto painted sur-
faces.

Check the level of fluid in the brake fluid reservoir.

Should the level be lower than the MAX level line, add
brake fluid compliant with the following specifications:

Recommended brake fluid:

Motul DOT 4 Brake Fluid
(See table of lubricants on Workshop Manual)

Utilise exclusively the prescribed brake

fluid. Use only new brake fluid from new and
sealed containers. NEVER utilise old or used
brake fluid.

Remove the fixing screws of the ABS unit support.

Place a clean cloth under the ABS unit in order to pro-

tect the surrounding areas from possible brake fluid
leakages.

NOTE The following operation must be perfor-

med by two people.

Keeping the rear brake lever pressed, loosen the MC2

union on the ABS unit and push the brake lever until it
comes to a stop. Tighten the union before releasing the
rear brake lever.
Repeat the above operation 3 TIMES.

Tighten the 2 unions of the ABS unit at the prescribed

torque.
ABS unions torque pressure: 18 Nm

Remove the cloth from the lower side of the ABS unit.
Reassemble the ABS unit support by reinserting the
related fixing screws.

- Phase 2: Rear braking system bleeding

Check the level of fluid in the brake fluid reservoir.

Should the level be lower than the MAX level line, add
brake fluid compliant with the following specifications:

Recommended brake fluid:

Remove the two screws (1) fastening the rear brake

caliper.

Remove the rear brake pipe retaining clamp (2). 2

Remove the rear brake caliper, by sliding it under the

swingarm on the left side of the bike.

Place a 17 mm spanner (or one with a suitable thickness to simulate the thickness of a brake disc) between the
pads of the rear brake caliper.

Incline the brake caliper as shown in the figures and in the schemes below, placing the bleed union (3) in the most
suitable position to help the air exit.

Connect the bleed pipe to the union (3), keeping it in a vertical position as shown in the figures.

NOTE The following operation must be perfor-

med by two people.
Press the rear brake lever 5 TIMES.
At the end of the operation, press the brake lever and
at the same time, loosen and tighten the bleed union
before the lever arrives to the end stroke.
Repeat the above described operation 5 TIMES.
While performing the above procedure, verify that the
fluid in the brake fluid reservoir does never fall below
the lower level line. Otherwise, add brake fluid compli-
ant with the following specifications:
Recommended brake fluid:
Motul DOT 4 Brake Fluid
(See table of lubricants on Workshop Manual)
When the above operations have been completed,
tighten the union and remove the pipe.

Clean the bleed union with alcohol and tighten it.

Make sure that the brake lever has a minimum initial
idle stroke; otherwise, repeat the above described ope-
rations.

Reassemble the clamp and the rear brake caliper, tigh-

tening the fastening screws (1) to the specified torque.

Torque pressure: 18 Nm 1

Fill the rear brake fluid reservoir until the fluid reaches
the maximum level.

Recommended brake fluid:

Utilise exclusively the prescribed brake

fluid. Use only new brake fluid from new and
sealed containers. NEVER utilise old or used
brake fluid.

Carefully clean around the edge of the brake fluid tank

using a clean cloth slightly dampened with alcohol.

Close the cover of the rear brake fluid reservoir by rein-

serting the two fixing screws.

- Phase 3: Road test of the vehicle

After the rear braking system bleeding, ride the vehicle

and perform a short test on road.

During the test, it is necessary to ride the vehicle at a

speed higher than 10 km/h and operate the rear brake
for 5 consecutive times, causing the ABS system to
function 5 times.

- Phase 4: Final rear braking system bleeding

Loctite 243
Repeat all the rear brake bleeding operations descri-
bed in the Phase 2 section.

When the bleeding operations have been completed,

reassemble the clamp and the rear brake caliper, tigh-
tening the fastening screws (1) to the specified torque.
