SUBJECT: Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast

(ADS-B) and Enhanced Surveillance Transponder
Issue

REASON: To inform operators about erroneous barometric

vertical rate data broadcast on airplanes fitted with
Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast OUT
(ADS-B OUT) and Enhanced Surveillance
Transponder.

DESCRIPTION:

Embraer received field reports of erroneous barometric vertical rate

data broadcast on airplanes fitted with Automatic Dependent
Surveillance-Broadcast OUT (ADS-B OUT) and Enhanced
Surveillance Transponder.
The investigation revealed that this issue may occur due to the NIM
(Network Interface Module) power cycle, on ground before takeoff, or
by a NIM reset in flight. In those cases, the configuration request sent
by transponder to NIM is missed causing the transponder to receive
the enhanced surveillance data in incorrect format and broadcast the
last valid barometric vertical rate latched in its memory.
In the aforementioned situation, the transponder will also set the
enhanced surveillance parameters to invalid. The issue can be
detected only by ATC or other ADS-B receivers.
