CHAPTER 7 – THE QUIT INDIA MOVEMENT

Syllabus
• Quit India Movement:
Causes (failure of Cripps Mission, Japanese threat),
Quit India Resolution and the significance of the Movement.

❖ Causes of the Quit India Movement:

➢ Failure of Cripps Mission: Sir Stafford Cripps, a member of the War
Cabinet, was sent to India for consultation with all the parties. He
proposed some constitutional reforms. All the parties and sections of
people rejected the proposals.
➢ The threat of the Japanese attack on India: The Japanese Army had
attacked Burma (Myanmar) and was marching towards Assam.
Mahatma Gandhi felt that the presence of the British in India was an
invitation to Japan to invade India during the Second World War. The
withdrawal of the British would prevent the attack. Therefore, they
decided to launch the Quit India Movement.
❖ Quit India Resolution:
➢ The All-India Congress Committee met at Bombay on August 8, 1942 and
passed the Quit India Resolution which was adopted at Wardha in July
1942.

❖ Significance of the Movement:

➢ The Quit India movement demonstrated the depth of the nationalist
feeling in India and the capacity of the Indians for struggle and sacrifice.
➢ It made it clear that the British could no longer rule India against the
wishes of the people.
➢ It was the mass uprising before attaining independence.
