Introduction
This process requires a translator who has linguistic knowledge of at least two languages:

1. English (EN) [Mandatory]

And one of the following languages

2. German (DE), Spanish (ES), French (FR), Italian (IT), Japanese (JA), Korean (KO), Portuguese (PT), Chinese
(ZH) [Any one of the following]

The task is to translate the given text to the required or target language with proper grammar, punctuation, spellings,
keeping the source meaning intact and also as per the glossary terms given.

Note: Majority of the source texts are going to be 1-2 sentences.

In this task, you are required to translate the source text into the target language. Here, you are
expected to use your linguistic expertise as well as adhere to the glossary terms given for each word
and match the translated text with the same. Once you are done with the translation you are required
to provide a comment related to any issues found in the source text, related to wrong use of
glossaries, misleading information, too ambiguous to translate.

Translation Guidelines

While translating a source text you should follow two important categories:

1. Accuracy - The condition or quality of being true, correct, or exact.

a. Creative interpretation
b. Mistranslation
c. Source language fragments

2. Fluency - Refers to continuity, smoothness, rate, and effort in reading or understanding the
translated text.
3. Inconsistency

● Creative Reinterpretation - The translated text is should be a word to word translation of the
source text without using any creativity.

Example : If the source text says "The sun is shining brightly," the translated text should also say "The
sun is shining brightly," without altering the words or meaning.

● Mistranslation - The translated text should accurately represent the source text.

Example : If the source text is “Ram and Sam are classmates” , then the translated text should also say
as Ram and Sam are classmates, instead it should not refer Ram and Sam as best friends.

● Source language fragments - This means that some parts of the text that were supposed to
be translated have not been translated.

Example : If the source text is “He ordered a café au lait for breakfast.” In this source text, café au
lait is a French word that means milk coffee. This phrase should have been translated into the
target language

● Addition & Omission - Here, the translated text should not include any additional information,
word or phrase that is not present in the source text, which could alter the meaning of the
source text

Example : If the source text says "The cat is on the mat," the translated text should say the same
thing without missing any words or changing the meaning.

● Inconsistency- refers to lack of coherence in the statement and presence of contradictory

statements. The translated text should be consistent with the source text and should not be
contradicting the same.

For example- If the gender used in the source text is he/his (which means the character is male)
the translated text should not consist of pronouns like she /her (which will mean the character is
a female)

● Grammar- while working on the translation Issues related to the grammar or syntax of the text,
other than spelling and orthography should be avoided. This can also include errors in sentence
structure, verb tense and punctuation.

For example- If the source text says, He went to the store. This means this was done in the past
and the translation text should be written in past tense as well.
Fluency/Grammar/Text Breaking
● Punctuation- These are special symbols that you add to writing to separate phrases and
sentences to show that something is a question, etc. While translating, the punctuations should
not be used incorrectly.

For example- If the source text is The sky is blue.", it shouldn't be translated as a question like
"The sky is blue?" with a question mark, because that would change the meaning.

● Spelling- While writing the translation spelling errors or capitalization of words, and whitespace
should be avoided.

For example- If the source text has the word sea which means a water body, and in the
translated text the word see is written which means watching. It might look like a mere spelling
error, however the whole context of the sentence might change.
Fluency/Grammar/Text Breaking

● Text Breaking- refers to a sentence end or paragraph break or line break. While translating, you
should not break a line or paragraph incorrectly.

Example :

Source text : "The quick brown fox /n jumps over the lazy dog."

The translated version should maintain the same line breaks:

Translated text : "El rápido zorro marrón /n salta sobre el perro perezoso."

Important Notes
➢ DO NOT use machine translation. We want these to feel natural and use natural language. DO NOT
use translation tools (e.g., Google Translate, ChatGPT, DeepL etc).
➢ Do NOT add any additional information in the translation or remove existing information from the
source during translation.
➢ Please use the glossary given as reference to translate the words from the source to the target
language.
➢ Ensure the translation feels native / natural to the audience in the target language.
➢ Please add necessary comments if the there was a problem with the source text and/or the
glossary. It is mandatory to add the comments if there is any problem (per your judgement) with
the source text or the glossary. If there is no problem, then “NA” can be written in the comments.
➢ Newline character (\n) present in the source text should be kept/retained/preserved in the
translation. Note: “\n” characters means line break between 2 sentences/phrases.
