CHECKPOINT: What are the significant roles and remarkable contributions of the Filipino
artists in Contemporary Arts?
From the 1970’s up to the present, artists began to combine different art forms and media
which gave rise to integrative arts –which refers to interdisciplinary art, art study, development,
production, display, or creative creation of work that makes full use of two or more disciplines
of art to produce a work for a particular public.
Because of integrative arts, contemporary art forms now include the following:
choreography
literary musical composition
theatrical performance
musical instruments
visual designs and applied arts combined
cinema
An artist is someone who is gifted with creativity and practices an imaginative art. Like all
other artists around the globe, the Filipino artists can be described as someone:
who finds a need to create art that is s entertaining, relevant and useful;
who uplifts the spirit, gives form to the immaterial, and the hidden truth of the universe;
who is a social critic who gives his opinion about the culture of his time;
who is a crusader attempting to influence the viewer to his or her side; and
who is versatile and an advocate for what he/she believes in.
In the past, the artist’s role was to create something aesthetically pleasing and entertaining.
However, in the kind of arts that we have today, the Filipino artists’ role is four-fold:
Prior to the Philippine Contemporary Art Era, only a few distinguished women were able to gain
entry into the world of arts, until the time came when many other women asserted their own identity
and contribute in social realism. The Order of National Artists plays a vital role in the development
of Philippine arts in the contemporary setting.
Living artists who have been Filipino citizens for the last
ten year prior to nomination as well as those who have died
after the establishment of the award in 1972, but were
Filipino citizens at the time of their death.
Artists who have helped build a Filipino sense of
nationhood through the content and form of their works.
Artists who have distinguished themselves by pioneering in
a mode of creative expression or style, thus earning
distinction and making an impact on succeeding
generations of artists.

REMEMBER
Key Points
Integrative Arts refer to interdisciplinary art, art study, development, production, display, or
creative creation of work that makes full use of two or more disciplines of art to produce a
work for a particular public.
Contemporary artists are conceptual, innovative, expressive and experimental.
Filipino artists have four-fold roles namely: personal, social, physical and immaterial.
The Order of the National Artists of the Philippines (ONA) recognizes individuals who made
exceptional contributions to the development of Philippine arts and letters. This award is
administered by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) together with the
Cultural Center of the Philippines.
The GAMABA award is the equivalent of the ONA for traditional Filipino arts.
The Manlilikha ng Bayan is a link between the past and the future. In order to permanently
sustain his/her are, it is the responsibility of the awardees to transfer the skills of his/her
traditional folk art to the younger generation through apprenticeship; to cooperate with the
implementing agency in the promotion and propagation of his/her traditional folk arts; and to
donate to the National Museum a sample or copy of his/her work.
