CONTENT STANDARD The learner demonstrates understanding of the significant roles of artists
from the regions and identify their contributions to contemporary arts.

CHECKPOINT: What are the significant roles and remarkable contributions of the Filipino
artists in Contemporary Arts?

From the 1970’s up to the present, artists began to combine different art forms and media
which gave rise to integrative arts –which refers to interdisciplinary art, art study, development,
production, display, or creative creation of work that makes full use of two or more disciplines
of art to produce a work for a particular public.

Because of integrative arts, contemporary art forms now include the following:
 choreography
 literary musical composition
 theatrical performance
 musical instruments
 visual designs and applied arts combined
 cinema

The Role of the Filipino Artist

An artist is someone who is gifted with creativity and practices an imaginative art. Like all
other artists around the globe, the Filipino artists can be described as someone:
 who finds a need to create art that is s entertaining, relevant and useful;
 who uplifts the spirit, gives form to the immaterial, and the hidden truth of the universe;
 who is a social critic who gives his opinion about the culture of his time;
 who is a crusader attempting to influence the viewer to his or her side; and
 who is versatile and an advocate for what he/she believes in.

In the past, the artist’s role was to create something aesthetically pleasing and entertaining.
However, in the kind of arts that we have today, the Filipino artists’ role is four-fold:

1. The Personal. The artist expresses what he or she feels.

2. The Social. The artist expresses what he or she sees around him/her.
3. The Physical. The artist finds a need to create something not only pleasing to look at but
something useful as well.
4. The Immaterial. The artist tries to unfold the hidden truth of the universe and the spiritual
force that inhabits the world.

Prior to the Philippine Contemporary Art Era, only a few distinguished women were able to gain
entry into the world of arts, until the time came when many other women asserted their own identity
and contribute in social realism. The Order of National Artists plays a vital role in the development
of Philippine arts in the contemporary setting.

The Order of the National Artists (Orden ng Pambansang Alagad

ng Sining) was established by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No.
1001 s. 1972 is considered to be the highest national recognition for
individuals who made exceptional contributions to the development of
Philippine arts and letters. This award is administered by the National
Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) together with the
Cultural Center of the Philippines. Painter Fernando Amorsolo was
awarded the same year making him the first National Artist.

What does it take to be a National Artist?

 Living artists who have been Filipino citizens for the last
ten year prior to nomination as well as those who have died
after the establishment of the award in 1972, but were
Filipino citizens at the time of their death.
 Artists who have helped build a Filipino sense of
nationhood through the content and form of their works.
 Artists who have distinguished themselves by pioneering in
a mode of creative expression or style, thus earning
distinction and making an impact on succeeding
generations of artists.
Fernando C. Amorsolo
 Artists who have created a substantial and significant body
(1892-1972)
of work and/or consistently displayed excellence in the
First National Artist of the
practice of their art form thus enriching artistic expression.
