CONTENT STANDARD The learner demonstrates understanding on how to evaluate
contemporary arts form based on the elements and principles.
Contemporary Art is an artwork that is created by today’s contemporary artists and has a
worldview, and is sensitive to changing times. It emphasizes the expressions of the self, emotions,
and manifests the inclusion of societal issues and concerns.
The traditional way of looking at an art, namely the visual arts, suggests that there are five basic
elements of an artwork –line, shape, color, texture, and space. However, many contemporary artists
today often go beyond the traditional elements and principles in their work by using new concepts
and approaches like the ones listed below:
1. Appropriation. It refers to the act of borrowing or reusing existing elements within a new
work. It makes use of prints, images, and icons that involve famous and recognizable works of
art, well-known literature, and easily accessible images from the media.

2. Performance. It is used to describe hybrid performance works and artists that travel between
the fields of experimental theatre, dance, video art, visual art, music composition and
performance art without adhering to one’s specific field’s practice. It interprets various
human activities such as ordinary activities such as chores, routines and rituals, to socially
relevant themes such as poverty, commercialism and war.
3. Perspective/Real Space. It is an art form that is performed and positioned in a specific space
such as public places. Perspective can play a role in the way the viewer looks at the artwork or
even the way the work is perceived.
6. Destruction. It refers to when an artist uses methods to show damage in or to their artwork.
Many times, this destruction is documented as a process, which in return, becomes the work
itself.
7. Text. Contemporary artists utilize text in their art to push past the concept that text is only
meant to be read. The additional meaning from the text adds another level of depth that cannot
be created by shape and color alone.
Balance refers to the even distribution of weight. It is the principle that deals with
equality. Two types of balance: the symmetrical and the asymmetrical.
Unity/Harmony refers to the wholeness of the design, the pleasing arrangement of parts,
and the agreement between parts of a composition, resulting in a unified whole.
Variety pertains to the assortment or diversity of a work of art.
Emphasis and Subordination. Emphasis gives importance or dominance to a unit or an
area while subordination gives less importance to a unit or area.
Movement refers to a way in conveying feelings and emotions.
Pattern is the regular arrangement of alternated or repeated elements (shapes, lines,
colors, or motifs.)
Proportion refers to how elements in an artwork or masterpieces have a relationship with
one another.

The task of evaluating a work of art requires a combination of objective information and
subjective opinion. In art appreciation, we do not simply tell whether we like or dislike the art, but
we need to explain why we like or dislike it. Here are the steps to critique an art work based on the
elements and principles of art and design.
SA-Q1: How do artistic elements and principles contribute to create meaning in art?
SA-Q2: Do you agree with the statement that “one of the best ways to improve your craft
is by learning to critique your own work”? If yes, why? If no, why not?
A. Directions: Research on Filipino artworks from the different regions that follow the elements
/principles of contemporary art. Print or take a screenshot or picture of it then paste it on a long- sized
bond paper. Use the given format below.

REMEMBER
Key Points
Contemporary Art is the artwork that is created by today’s contemporary artists and has a
worldview, and is sensitive to changing times. In this digital age, it can now be found
wherever artists can exhibit their work, not just in the museums or galleries but also in public
spaces, like malls, bus stations, parks, commercial buildings etc.
Contemporary artists are conceptual, innovative, expressive and experimental.
The traditional way of looking at an art, namely the visual arts, suggests that there are five
basic elements of an artwork –line, shape, color, texture, and space. Many contemporary
artists today often go beyond the traditional elements and principles in their work by using
new concepts and approaches like the elements of appropriation, performance, perspective or
real space, hybridity, technology-based art, destruction and text-based art.
The principles of art and design are balance, unity/harmony, variety, emphasis, movement.
pattern, and proportion.
Contemporary Art Form may be evaluated through a combination of objective information
and subjective opinion. The steps to critique or evaluate an artwork includes: Description of
Facts, Objective Analysis, Interpretation based on Subjective Opinion backed up with
evidence and Judgment.
