CHECKPOINT: What are the elements and principles of Contemporary Art?

What is Contemporary Art?

Contemporary Art is an artwork that is created by today’s contemporary artists and has a
worldview, and is sensitive to changing times. It emphasizes the expressions of the self, emotions,
and manifests the inclusion of societal issues and concerns.

What are the Elements/Principles of Contemporary Arts?

The traditional way of looking at an art, namely the visual arts, suggests that there are five basic
elements of an artwork –line, shape, color, texture, and space. However, many contemporary artists
today often go beyond the traditional elements and principles in their work by using new concepts
and approaches like the ones listed below:

1. Appropriation. It refers to the act of borrowing or reusing existing elements within a new
work. It makes use of prints, images, and icons that involve famous and recognizable works of
art, well-known literature, and easily accessible images from the media.

2. Performance. It is used to describe hybrid performance works and artists that travel between
the fields of experimental theatre, dance, video art, visual art, music composition and
performance art without adhering to one’s specific field’s practice. It interprets various
human activities such as ordinary activities such as chores, routines and rituals, to socially
relevant themes such as poverty, commercialism and war.

3. Perspective/Real Space. It is an art form that is performed and positioned in a specific space
such as public places. Perspective can play a role in the way the viewer looks at the artwork or
even the way the work is perceived.

4. Hybridity. It is the usage of unconventional materials, mixing of unlikely materials with

traditional mediums to produce an artwork. Example: recycled or industrial materials, coffee
for painting; miniature sculptures using crayons; duct tape, lipstick etc. for pixel art
masterpieces; feathers, acrylic paint, and make up cosmetics for body painting.

5. Technology-based Art. Computer-generated or manipulated visual arts that make use of

digital technology in the creation and dissemination of art works as part of the creative or
presentation process. Example: Mobile phone art, video phenomenon from YouTube
Recording Performances, video posting, sharing, live streaming and the like.

6. Destruction. It refers to when an artist uses methods to show damage in or to their artwork.
Many times, this destruction is documented as a process, which in return, becomes the work
itself.

7. Text. Contemporary artists utilize text in their art to push past the concept that text is only
meant to be read. The additional meaning from the text adds another level of depth that cannot
be created by shape and color alone.

Principles of Art Design

 Balance refers to the even distribution of weight. It is the principle that deals with
equality. Two types of balance: the symmetrical and the asymmetrical.
 Unity/Harmony refers to the wholeness of the design, the pleasing arrangement of parts,
and the agreement between parts of a composition, resulting in a unified whole.
 Variety pertains to the assortment or diversity of a work of art.
 Emphasis and Subordination. Emphasis gives importance or dominance to a unit or an
area while subordination gives less importance to a unit or area.
 Movement refers to a way in conveying feelings and emotions.
 Pattern is the regular arrangement of alternated or repeated elements (shapes, lines,
colors, or motifs.)
 Proportion refers to how elements in an artwork or masterpieces have a relationship with
one another.

The task of evaluating a work of art requires a combination of objective information and
subjective opinion. In art appreciation, we do not simply tell whether we like or dislike the art, but
we need to explain why we like or dislike it. Here are the steps to critique an art work based on the
elements and principles of art and design.

STEPS TO CRITIQUE OR EVALUATE AN ART WORK

1. DESCRIPTION (Think of FACTS) 3. INTERPRETATION (SUBJECTIVE

 What’s the title of the artwork? opinion but supported by evidence)
 Who is the artist?
 When and where was it created?  What is the artist trying to
 What media was used? communicate?
 Is there a primary subject in the piece?  What thoughts or feelings come up
 What specific elements of art can be when you see the piece?
found within the piece?  What evidence can you back up with
your opinion on the piece?
2. ANALYSIS (Be 100% OBJECTIVE)
 How do elements of art interact with 4. JUDGMENT (COMBINATION of
each other? Steps 1, 2, & 3)
 What specific elements stand out?
 What principles of design can you find?  Do you like it? Why or why not?
 Is the art work effective?
 What criteria do you think are important
that helped you in concluding your
judgment?

SA-Q1: How do artistic elements and principles contribute to create meaning in art?
SA-Q2: Do you agree with the statement that “one of the best ways to improve your craft
is by learning to critique your own work”? If yes, why? If no, why not?

Let’s Practice! (Write your answers on a separate sheet.)

A. Directions: Research on Filipino artworks from the different regions that follow the elements

real space, hybridity, technology-based art, destruction and text-based art.
 The principles of art and design are balance, unity/harmony, variety, emphasis, movement.
